Five things we learnt from opening round of the Betway Premiership
Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC, who finished in the top three last season, got off to stuttering starts with the Buccaneers and Stellies losing and the Brazilians drawing.
Below are five the things we learnt from the opening round of fixtures that provided some edge-of-seat thrills and spills. Chiefs are up and running
Kaizer Chiefs started their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC in Cape Town despite playing the match without coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is on compassionate leave after his wife was involved in a car accident in Tunisia.
Amakhosi did not dominate the determined Stellies, who played for more than 70 minutes with 10 men after defender Siviwe Nkwali was shown red, but there were positive signs of good things to come.

The 21-year-old Aden has had a brilliant start to life in the Amakhosi first team since captaining their junior side to the DStv Diski Challenge last season. In his first two senior games – both won by Chiefs – Aden has picked up the man-of-the-match award. And Kaizer Chiefs legend Fabian McCarthy wants his son to surpass his achievements on the field and have a better career than he did. With commanding performances in the heart of defence, 21-year-old Aden McCarthy is quickly proving that football greatness runs in the family. Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW ahead of Wednesday's game against Polokwane, McCarthy senior said: "I think he just gave a good performance, he did well. I didn't expect the man-of-the-match performance. Clean sheet, that's all I said. 'Keep it tight, make sure you don't let them go past you.' "He has to do better than his father. Remember we're here, our fathers set the tone for us to go higher than them, so now we're setting it on for them to go to the highest level,' said McCarthy senior, who won 10 caps for Bafana Bafana and also turned out for the likes of Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns in a 14-year career. "Very humbled, very proud, very priceless moments that one just has to embrace and say 'Thank you, Lord, for giving me such a kid and for keeping him in a safe place.' I said, 'Congratulations, you need to double up now'," he added. Thanks to the young McCarthy's performances in the heart of defence, Amakhosi currently find themselves second in the league after two wins from two games. Chiefs will be back on the field next Tuesday when they host Richards Bay and will be hoping for another inspired performance from the young academy graduate and son of a club legend. IOL Sport

Even more so if you are caught wearing an Orlando Pirates shirt after those victories, with my side of the aisle looking rather grim following the opposite results — two losses in as many matches. Walk around town in the iconic black, the skull and crossbones embroidered on your breast, and you are more than likely to get the customary greeting — arms crossed at the wrist — or a sardonic smile from those who follow the Glamour Boys, challenging you with an 'Amakhosi for life.' That's the type of national dialogue I enjoy … the one that reminds me that, when it comes to South Africans, we are all very much the same despite creed and politics; and in spite of what the toxic cesspools of social media will spout, or our political leaders might blast over a loudhailer. And it doesn't take an eye-watering amount of money to inspire it. Truth be told, domestic football needs Chiefs to be successful. They remain the biggest brand — the marquee sporting name in this country — regardless of the success of Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates, the Springboks lifting two consecutive Rugby World Cups, or the Proteas finally getting their hands on a major ICC trophy … cup … mace … thing. Despite the PSL's shoddy administration — poor officiating, suspect scheduling, last season's Royal AM saga, and clubs being sold like cookies at a church bazaar — football in this country continues to thrive. That resilience is mirrored across other major sporting codes, which survive despite questionable boardroom decisions and a lack of adequate state support. All goals scored within regulation time contribute towards our Goals For Charity initiative. After our Quarter Final round, we're sitting at a whopping 15 goals! Our sovereignty might be undermined by nations with ridiculous foreign policy agendas, while graft cripples infrastructure and service delivery, yet no nation can pull itself up from the bootstraps like we do. If recent sporting events have proven anything, it's this: we South Africans are a bunch of champions, consistently let down only by the fumbling ineptitude of our leaders across the political spectrum — right to left. On Saturday, that camaraderie will once again be on display.
