McCarthy senior, who spent five years in the famous black-and-gold Chiefs jersey in the early 2000s, was proud of his son's early achievements.
The 21-year-old Aden has had a brilliant start to life in the Amakhosi first team since captaining their junior side to the DStv Diski Challenge last season. In his first two senior games – both won by Chiefs – Aden has picked up the man-of-the-match award.
And Kaizer Chiefs legend Fabian McCarthy wants his son to surpass his achievements on the field and have a better career than he did.
With commanding performances in the heart of defence, 21-year-old Aden McCarthy is quickly proving that football greatness runs in the family.
Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW ahead of Wednesday's game against Polokwane, McCarthy senior said: "I think he just gave a good performance, he did well. I didn't expect the man-of-the-match performance. Clean sheet, that's all I said. 'Keep it tight, make sure you don't let them go past you.'
"He has to do better than his father. Remember we're here, our fathers set the tone for us to go higher than them, so now we're setting it on for them to go to the highest level,' said McCarthy senior, who won 10 caps for Bafana Bafana and also turned out for the likes of Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns in a 14-year career.
"Very humbled, very proud, very priceless moments that one just has to embrace and say 'Thank you, Lord, for giving me such a kid and for keeping him in a safe place.' I said, 'Congratulations, you need to double up now'," he added.
Thanks to the young McCarthy's performances in the heart of defence, Amakhosi currently find themselves second in the league after two wins from two games.
Chiefs will be back on the field next Tuesday when they host Richards Bay and will be hoping for another inspired performance from the young academy graduate and son of a club legend.

Why Kaizer Chiefs fans should be excited about the arrival of Asenele Velebayi

Got their man Asenele Veebayi has recently completed his move from Cape Town Spurs to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. Photo: Kaizer Chiefs on X Image: Kaizer Chiefs on X After one of the longest transfer sagas in the history of South African football, Kaizer Chiefs have finally got their man and confirmed the signing of Asenele Velebayi. While Cape Town Spurs will continue to fight, Velebayi joins Chiefs on a free transfer after the Western Cape side were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season. His arrival also comes at a time when Chiefs are entering a second season under Nasreddine Nabi, a coach who demands energy, bravery, and creativity in the final third. Nabi's sides play with purpose and attacking intent, constantly looking to stretch defences and create overloads in dangerous areas. That philosophy aligns perfectly with Velebayi's natural game – a willingness to take risks, drive at opponents, and create opportunities out of nothing. Next Stay Close ✕ Chiefs Welcome Velebayi to Naturena We would like to announce the signing of Asanele Velebayi. The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long-term contract with the Club. Welcome to the Kaizer Chiefs family!#WelcomeVelabayi #Amakhosi4Life — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) August 12, 2025 So, what can the 22-year-old from Philipi in Cape Town offer the Soweto giants? First of all, despite his young age, he is mature, and has been playing professionally for five seasons. He is also comfortable in multiple attacking roles – primarily a right winger, but equally effective on the left or in an advanced midfield role. Chiefs have been desperate for attacking spark, and Velebayi brings exactly that – a creative, unpredictable presence who can beat defenders, excite the crowd, and unlock stubborn backlines. His speed, and ability to take on defenders will also come in handy. Over the last couple of seasons, Chiefs have not had unpredictable players who can wow the crowd and leave defenders flat-footed. Another area where Velebayi thrives is his productivity during games. He is able to put the ball on a plate for strikers to score, something the club have been struggling with of late. And, because he was entrusted with the captain's armband by his former club, he is also a good leader on the pitch. This is a signing that Amakhosi's scouting department got right for once. If he hits the ground running, Velebayi could become a game-changing force on the wing, leaving defenders scrambling and transforming Chiefs' frontline under Nabi's fearless, attack-minded approach – finally giving the Amakhosi faithful the unpredictability they've been craving. How Bobby predicted Orlando Pirates' downfall after Riveiro's departure

It appears that Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung might have been onto something when he predicted Orlando Pirates to struggle following the departure of Jose Riveiro. The Buccaneers appeared to be sailing last season, having claimed the MTN8. A treble was on the cards midseason and having gone unbeaten until the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, many fans expected the Sea Robbers to finish with two or three trophies at the end of their campaign. In April, Jose Riveiro announced he would leave Pirates at the end of the 2024/25 season and that announcement appeared to have somewhat affected the team. In a space of 40 days, Orlando Pirates lost the league, CAF CL and also the Nedbank Cup final. Riveiro jumped ship to join Al Ahly end of May while his former side appointed ex-Marumo Gallants coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The Moroccan coach has lost back-to-back league matches for Orlando Pirates this season, and some fans are already sceptical. In April, a video was shared on X (Twitter), which shows Bobby Motaung sharing his thoughts on Riveiro's departure. 'Did you see the Pirates coach is leaving? They will be average next season. We are not changing (our coach). Stuart Baxter did the same thing. He won for three seasons. Once he saw that his profile had improved, what did he do? things are like that,' Motaung said. Fans shared mixed views on Motaung's comments. Some felt he was jealous of Pirates' success, while others agreed with his point, given how European coaches left PSL teams after winning trophies. With Riveiro gone, Orlando Pirates have struggled to get results and have changed most of the squad which brought them success.
