Melaka JPJ vows stern action against illegal micromobility vehicle use on public roads
Deputy Director Khairul Aswad Abdul Halim said the department is aware of a viral 18-second video showing three individuals riding electric scooters on a public road.
"We would like to stress that this behaviour is illegal and poses a danger not only to those involved but also to other road users," he said in a statement on Sunday (May 4).
He added that under Section 54(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), any individual operating an unauthorised vehicle on a public road may be prosecuted.
"If convicted, offenders may face a fine of up to RM1,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both," he said.
He said the use of micromobility vehicles such as e-scooters, hoverboards, monowheels, Segways, and unapproved electric bicycles on public roads is strictly prohibited under the Road Vehicle (Prohibition of Use) (Amendment) Order 2021, which came into effect on Dec 17, 2021.
"Micromobility vehicles are only permitted in designated areas such as recreational parks, dedicated lanes, or private premises, not on public roads," he said.
He also urged parents to closely monitor their children's movements, particularly concerning the growing use of micromobility vehicles.
"Any violations of this regulation can be reported to the RTD or the nearest authorities for further action," he added.
The viral video on TikTok showed three individuals riding electric scooters, believed to be at a traffic light junction along the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin Highway near Bachang on Saturday. - Bernama

The operation, codenamed Op Taring Bravo 3, was carried out at about 4.30pm on Aug 11 and led to the arrest of a 41-year-old caretaker. MACC busts military smuggling syndicate in Operation Sohor
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has successfully dismantled a major smuggling syndicate masterminded by senior Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) officers operating in southern Malaysia through Operation Sohor. The operation was conducted by MACC Headquarters' Intelligence Division with assistance from the Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS). According to sources, five senior military officers and five civilians, including an Indonesian national aged between 30 and 55 years old, were arrested in the Klang Valley area since the operation was launched at 6.30am today. 'The senior officers are from MAF's intelligence division, including two former MAF members from the same department. They were assigned to monitor and curb smuggling activities, but are believed to have colluded with the smuggling syndicate for the past five years and are suspected of amassing bribes totalling over RM3 million,' the source said. Preliminary investigations found that the five senior officers who are the main suspects allegedly leaked military operation information to smugglers and conspired with the syndicate to bring in prohibited items such as drugs, cigarettes and other goods from neighbouring countries into Malaysia, involving a total monthly value of approximately RM5 million. 'The suspects are believed to have received bribes ranging from RM30,000 to RM50,000 for each smuggling trip conducted,' the source added. The early morning raids were carried out by the Intelligence Division through Operation Sohor based on intelligence gathered over approximately 12 months. Cash totalling over RM63,000, several drug packages, weighing and measuring equipment, alcoholic beverages, and replica weapons were discovered at the raided premises and have all been seized. According to sources, the smuggling network involving these senior military officers is extensive and complex to dismantle. Meanwhile, an Indonesian woman without valid travel documents was also arrested during the raids and is believed to be the mistress of one of the suspected senior military officers. MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, had reportedly confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. He emphasised that this operation should be taken seriously by all parties as it involves smuggling that could compromise national security. 'Although we have various agencies to monitor and take action, smuggling activities continue to occur,' he said. He added that all suspects will be brought to the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court tomorrow for remand applications under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has dismantled a drug and contraband smuggling syndicate involving senior armed forces officers in the southern region. The operation, codenamed Op Sohor, was launched early this morning and resulted in the arrest of five senior military officers and five civilians. According to sources, the suspects, including an Indonesian national, are aged between 30 and 55, and were arrested around the Klang Valley during the operation, which began at 6.30am today. The operation was carried out by the MACC Intelligence Division with assistance from the Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS). Sources added that the syndicate is believed to have been capable of moving goods worth RM5 million each month. "The senior officers were from the Armed Forces intelligence division, including two former personnel from the same unit. "They were tasked with monitoring and curbing smuggling activities but are believed to have colluded with the syndicate for the past five years, allegedly amassing more than RM3 million in bribes," a source said today. Initial investigations showed that the five senior officers, who are the main suspects, allegedly leaked military operational information to smugglers and worked with the syndicate to bring prohibited goods, such as drugs, cigarettes and other contraband, from neighbouring countries into Malaysia. The total value of goods smuggled is estimated at about RM5 million per month. "The suspects are believed to have received bribes of between RM30,000 and RM50,000 for each smuggling trip," the source added. This morning's raid was conducted by the Intelligence Division based on intelligence gathered over the past 12 months. Authorities also seized more than RM63,000 in cash, several packets of drugs, weighing and measuring equipment, liquor and imitation firearms from the raided premises. According to sources, the smuggling network involving these senior military officers was extensive and difficult to uncover. During the operation, an Indonesian woman without valid travel documents was also arrested. She is believed to be the mistress of one of the suspected senior military officers. MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, when contacted, confirmed the arrests. He said the case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009. He stressed that such operations must be taken seriously by all parties, as these smuggling activities could jeopardise national security. "Even though we have various agencies to monitor and take action, smuggling activities still persist," he said. He added that all suspects will be brought to the Putrajaya magistrate's court tomorrow for a remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
