[UPDATED] MACC busts smuggling ring run by senior military officers
The operation, codenamed Op Sohor, was launched early this morning and resulted in the arrest of five senior military officers and five civilians.
According to sources, the suspects, including an Indonesian national, are aged between 30 and 55, and were arrested around the Klang Valley during the operation, which began at 6.30am today.
The operation was carried out by the MACC Intelligence Division with assistance from the Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS).
Sources added that the syndicate is believed to have been capable of moving goods worth RM5 million each month.
"The senior officers were from the Armed Forces intelligence division, including two former personnel from the same unit.
"They were tasked with monitoring and curbing smuggling activities but are believed to have colluded with the syndicate for the past five years, allegedly amassing more than RM3 million in bribes," a source said today.
Initial investigations showed that the five senior officers, who are the main suspects, allegedly leaked military operational information to smugglers and worked with the syndicate to bring prohibited goods, such as drugs, cigarettes and other contraband, from neighbouring countries into Malaysia.
The total value of goods smuggled is estimated at about RM5 million per month.
"The suspects are believed to have received bribes of between RM30,000 and RM50,000 for each smuggling trip," the source added.
This morning's raid was conducted by the Intelligence Division based on intelligence gathered over the past 12 months.
Authorities also seized more than RM63,000 in cash, several packets of drugs, weighing and measuring equipment, liquor and imitation firearms from the raided premises.
According to sources, the smuggling network involving these senior military officers was extensive and difficult to uncover.
During the operation, an Indonesian woman without valid travel documents was also arrested. She is believed to be the mistress of one of the suspected senior military officers.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, when contacted, confirmed the arrests. He said the case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.
He stressed that such operations must be taken seriously by all parties, as these smuggling activities could jeopardise national security.
"Even though we have various agencies to monitor and take action, smuggling activities still persist," he said.
He added that all suspects will be brought to the Putrajaya magistrate's court tomorrow for a remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Samirah, 50, who is Nazrin's widow, the teenagers (now 22 and 19), and an Indonesian woman, Eka Wahyu Lestari, who is still at large, were charged with killing Nazrin, 45, at his house in Mutiara Damansara between 11.30pm on June 13, 2018, and 4am the following day. In upholding their acquittal, the Court of Appeal held that there was insufficient evidence to determine the guilt of the accused. The Court of Appeal also ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the fire was deliberately started, as there was contradicting evidence from the Chemistry Department of Malaysia and the Fire and Rescue Department's investigators. The Court of Appeal held that the testimony surrounding the petrol and the analysis done on it did not use certified methods, and the investigators had skipped crucial steps needed for the analysis of the petrol. - Bernama

'Ghost ship' spotted in Terengganu waters linked to Johor tanker blaze
KUANTAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has intercepted a 'ghost ship' believed to be the tanker that caught fire in the waters off eastern Johor on Aug 7. The unmanned vessel, first spotted near the Semangkok A oil rig in Terengganu on Aug 12, is now being towed to the Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) in Terengganu for salvage. Pahang MMEA director First Admiral Mazlan Mat Rejab said the Kuantan Maritime Rescue Sub Centre was alerted by its Johor counterparts about the abandoned vessel, located about four nautical miles from the oil rig, at 4.45pm on Aug 12. "The unmanned vessel had entered the oil rig's waters and risked colliding with other offshore platforms nearby. Our Special Task and Rescue (Star) team managed to board the tanker at about 6.58pm yesterday and secure it with a towline to another vessel. "The tanker is expected to berth at KSB tomorrow (Aug 15), after which a detailed inspection will be carried out to confirm its identity and determine if there are any victims on board," he said in a statement today. Mazlan said the salvage operation will continue until the vessel is safely handed over to the Marine Department. He said the agency suspects the vessel is linked to the Aug 7 incident in which an oil tanker caught fire off Tanjung Sedili, killing a 42-year-old Indonesian crew member and injuring four others. During the integrated operation, MMEA's Dauphin AS365 N3 helicopter carrying the agency's Star team was joined by personnel from the Marine Department and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.

Couple charged with submitting false claims
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 14): A husband and wife were charged at a Sessions Court here with submitting false claims involving the supply of machinery and certification under the Small and Medium Industry (SMI) Assistance Programme. The couple aged 54 and 57 pleaded not guilty to all their separate and joint charges before judge Jason Juga today. On the first count, they were accused of abetting a company manager in submitting a set of documents containing false particulars, namely claims for MeSTI and Halal certification services in the food industry for entrepreneurs under the Sabah SMI Assistance Programme (BAIKS) 2022, including renovation works when in fact the alleged services were never carried out. The alleged offence was committed at a department's office here on November 11, 2022. On the second count, they were alleged to have committed a similar offence by submitting a set of documents containing false particulars, namely claims for MeSTI, My Food Tag and Halal certification under BAIKS 2023, including renovation works which allegedly was never carried out. This alleged offence was committed at the same department on November 2, 2023. As for their joint charge, the couple is accused of submitting an invoice from another company dated Nov 7, 2023, along with 13 supporting delivery order documents containing false particulars. These involved claims for the supply of 11 units of 100-litre machine retorts, two units of 150-litre machine retorts, registration and approval from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), hydrostatic tests by DOSH, and premises registration for 13 units which were never carried out. The alleged offence was committed at the same department on November 10, 2023. The court set September 23 for pre-trial of the cases management. For the first and second charges, the court set bail at RM20,000 with a RM3,000 deposit and one local surety each. For their joint charge, the accused were released on RM20,000 bail with a RM3,000 deposit and one local surety. The court had imposed additional conditions for the couple, including to report themselves to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office every two months, to surrender their passports, if any, and not to contact the prosecution's witnesses. The couple was represented by counsel Azhier Farhan Arisin.
