'Ghost ship' spotted in Terengganu waters linked to Johor tanker blaze

KUANTAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has intercepted a 'ghost ship' believed to be the tanker that caught fire in the waters off eastern Johor on Aug 7.
The unmanned vessel, first spotted near the Semangkok A oil rig in Terengganu on Aug 12, is now being towed to the Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) in Terengganu for salvage.
Pahang MMEA director First Admiral Mazlan Mat Rejab said the Kuantan Maritime Rescue Sub Centre was alerted by its Johor counterparts about the abandoned vessel, located about four nautical miles from the oil rig, at 4.45pm on Aug 12.
"The unmanned vessel had entered the oil rig's waters and risked colliding with other offshore platforms nearby. Our Special Task and Rescue (Star) team managed to board the tanker at about 6.58pm yesterday and secure it with a towline to another vessel.
"The tanker is expected to berth at KSB tomorrow (Aug 15), after which a detailed inspection will be carried out to confirm its identity and determine if there are any victims on board," he said in a statement today.
Mazlan said the salvage operation will continue until the vessel is safely handed over to the Marine Department.
He said the agency suspects the vessel is linked to the Aug 7 incident in which an oil tanker caught fire off Tanjung Sedili, killing a 42-year-old Indonesian crew member and injuring four others.
During the integrated operation, MMEA's Dauphin AS365 N3 helicopter carrying the agency's Star team was joined by personnel from the Marine Department and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.

MMEA busts 851 maritime offence cases

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has busted 851 cases connected to various maritime offences from January until July this year, with total seizures amounting to RM84mil. Its acting deputy director-general of operations Rear Admiral (M) Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the cases involved offences such as intrusion by foreign fishermen, human trafficking, smuggling of cigarettes, alcohol, subsidised goods and vessel violations. 'There has yet to be any arrests linked to firearms smuggling but the MMEA, with the cooperation of all enforcement agencies in the country, will continue to conduct operations and exchange related information. 'The most common forms of smuggling include cigarettes, people and drugs,' he told reporters after launching the MMEA Merdeka programme here yesterday, Bernama reported. On new methods used by syndicates, he said that drones are now used to monitor areas before smuggling attempts are conducted. 'When I was working in northern Malaysia, they would smuggle cockle spats, ketum and drugs, and usually syndicates would fly drones. 'Thanks to the partnership with the police and armed forces at the border, we foiled several smuggling attempts,' he said, adding that the introduction of certain apps also became a challenge for the MMEA to conduct operations on land. On new MMEA assets, he said the agency will procure assets such as the AgustaWestland AW189 helicopter and a former United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) to boost operations. 'We will receive four AW189 helicopters that can also conduct search and rescue operations over a wider area,' he added.

Immigration detains 37 foreigners in major Johor Baru operation

JOHOR BARU: Thirty-seven foreigners were detained in raids by the state Immigration department for various immigration offences, here. Its director, Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus, said Ops Selera and Ops Sapu were conducted around Johor Baru on Friday (Aug 15) with the involvement of 40 officers. 'The arrests involved 13 Myanmar men, 10 Myanmar women, five Bangladeshi men, three Indonesian men and six Indonesian women, aged 21 to 60. "Two foreigners also tried to escape during the operation but were nabbed. 'A local man, who was the premises owner, was also arrested for harbouring the foreigners,' he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 17). He said the detainees were found without valid permits, overstaying despite expired or revoked permits, and misusing social visit passes. 'Six notices were also issued requiring individuals to appear at the Enforcement Division office to assist investigations. 'All detainees have been placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further action,' he added. Mohd Rusdi said the operation was based on intelligence from public complaints about foreigners working without permits. 'We will continue to step up enforcement against foreigners committing immigration offences, and will not compromise with employers, premises owners or individuals who hire or harbour them. 'Eligible foreigners are also encouraged to join the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0, which runs from May 19 until April 30 next year, to return home voluntarily,' he said.
