Clark is all-in on the reigning NFC No. 1 seed
There are plenty of analysts who are believers in the Detroit Lions for the 2025 season. Other than perhaps diehard Lions fans, none may be bigger than ESPN analyst Ryan Clark.
During the Monday Night Countdown before Monday's preseason game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders, the panel of experts each had 40 seconds to talk about a team and make their case for the upcoming season. Clark chose to talk about the Lions and made it clear he is very high on the reigning NFC North champions.
"I'm wondering why we're sleeping on them like we took a melatonin, rubbed ourselves in lavender and drank chamomile tea," Clark proclaimed. "The Detroit Lions are a team that is poised to be right back where they were last year, which is the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC. We're talking about two running backs that can absolutely get it done.
"Jared Goff, who they told me this week, is everything to this team. And Dan Campbell, who I watched at practice be precise, be intense and have a sense of urgency that feels like they've underachieved two years in a row. And Kelvin Sheppard told me that taking over for Aaron Glenn on the defensive side of the ball, he is coming after people. Not to mention, he has 12 dudes who were on IR last year in the playoffs and also lost Amik Robertson in the first half playing against the Washington Commanders. They back."
Host Scott Van Pelt was so impressed with Clark's rant that he opined, "Give him another Emmy." Clark is clearly all-in on the Lions this season, getting further fueled after attending the Lions' joint practice with the Miami Dolphins.
Clark didn't even mention the position he played with the Steelers, the safety position, where the Lions have two of the best in the NFL in Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. Of course, you can only say so much in 40 seconds. Even with that omission, Clark loves the outlook of this Lions team that has seemingly slipped under the radar for some folks, despite winning 15 games last season. The Lions are right in the crosshairs of Clark's radar.

Caitlin Clark injury update: Fever guard reportedly tweaked ankle during workout

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is working her way back from a right groin injury that has sidelined her for 13 consecutive games, but it was revealed Wednesday she suffered another injury during her recovery. Clark, who last suited up for the Fever on July 15, suffered a mild bone bruise in her left ankle during an individual workout session in Phoenix on Aug. 7, according to The Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Network. Clark tweaked her ankle the same day the team lost guards Sydney Colson (left ACL tear) and Aari McDonald (broken right foot) to season-ending injuries in the Fever's 95-60 loss to the Mercury. Ten days later, the Fever also lost guard Sophie Cunningham (MCL tear) for the season on Aug. 17, further depleting the team's backcourt. There's no timeline for Clark's return. Fieldhouse Files was the first to report the news of Clark's ankle injury. On Wednesday, head coach Stephanie White confirmed Clark has not returned to practice, which would mark a crucial step in her ramp-up process. "Until (Clark) can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, we're really status quo," White said. "You never wanna see injuries happen, first and foremost," White added, referring to Cunningham. "You hate it when it's anyone, let alone the third season-ending injury that we've seen this year. But like I told our team ... yes, we've been dealt a crappy hand, but we have to play it." Clark, who previously missed time with a left quad and a left groin injury, has been sidelined 22 of the Fever's 35 games this season. Indiana is 8-5 with Clark in the lineup and 11-11 without her on the floor. The 2024 Rookie of the Year is averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and a career-high 8.8 assists in 13 games this season. Her assists average is the second-highest in the league, behind Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas (9.0). Caitlin Clark injury timeline The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. How long is Caitlin Clark out for? Fever share latest injury update

Clark's status remains 'status quo' Though it's not the news that Indiana fans were hoping for, the Fever did provide a bit of an injury update on star point guard Caitlin Clark on Wednesday. Asked after practice for an update on Clark, Fever head coach Stephanie White indicated circumstances haven't changed much for the Indiana superstar. "I mean, until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, we're really status quo. Same as we have been," White said. White had said before last Sunday's Fever win that Indiana still hoped Clark could return before regular season's end. "That's the hope. The hope is that she's back," White said before Sunday's win. Despite optimism from fans that recent roster moves were an indication of Clark's imminent return, a Fever spokesperson clarified to the IndyStar earlier this week that the organization's recent roster moves didn't have anything to do with the injury status of star guard Caitlin Clark. Clark has been sidelined by a series of injuries during the 2025 WNBA season. A left quadriceps injury, a left groin injury and this right groin injury have all cost Clark significant time during the 2025 campaign. With this news from White, it certainly seems as though Clark's stretch of regular season games missed due to injury will stretch to at least 14 straight. Clark has missed each of the Fever's past 13 regular season games with her right groin injury. That marked the 22nd regular season game that Clark has missed during the 2025 WNBA season and the 23rd game overall, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. This latest update from coach White doesn't feel like the most promising development for fans holding out hope that Clark will indeed still return from injury in the 2025 season. ESPN play-by-play broadcaster Ryan Ruocco said during the Fever's Tuesday, Aug. 12 game against the Dallas Wings that the Fever were hoping that Clark would return to practice this week. "Now, that stretch where they have the week off is where Stephanie White reiterated to us today she's hoping Caitlin Clark returns to practice. Stephanie talked yesterday about how Caitlin has been running more, doing more on-court work. "She is hoping that Caitlin returns to practice next week, would need multiple days of practice before she then gets into a game, but you see the way the schedule stacks up after that week and wonder could one of those games against Minnesota or maybe the 26th at home against Seattle be a potential return game," Ruocco said. Obviously, that return to practice for Clark hasn't happened yet, and it's beginning to seem like it could be telling. Limited to 13 games this season, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field-goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy. Caitlin Clark misses another practice as Fever call her prospect of return 'status quo'

Two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark missed another practice with her injured right groin Wednesday, and coach Stephanie White still does not have a timetable for her star's return. Clark has not played since hurting her groin in the final minute of a game July 15 at Connecticut. Three different muscle injuries this season have forced Clark to sit out 22 games including the last 13 — and All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. The worst part: White is simply hoping Clark returns for some of her team's last nine regular-season games. Indiana also lost three other key players with season-ending injuries over the last two weeks. "Until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, it's really status quo,' White said after Wednesday's workout at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark never missed a game in college and played in every Fever game last season when she won the WNBA's Rookie of the Year Award. Indiana spent the offseason going all-in on putting a stronger supporting cast around the former Iowa star and those moves appear to have paid off by keeping the Fever in playoff position without Clark and the rest. But Clark still has a role with the Fever. 'Caitlin's still there, like that hasn't wavered,' All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell said. 'And I think even though they're not in the lineup, we still feel everyone's presence.' ___
