Israelis stranded in Cyprus find shelter and kosher meals with help of rabbis and residents

LARNACA, Cyprus (AP) — Yossi Levitan was only making a brief stopover to visit his brother in Cyprus. His travel plans didn't include slicing mushrooms for kosher meals at a local Jewish community center to help feed thousands of other stranded travelers.
Levitan is one of approximately 6,500 people who are in Cyprus attempting to reach Israel, located about 470 kilometers (292 miles) from the island nation in the Mediterranean Sea.
Initially, 2,400 passengers aboard Israel-bound flights were stranded in Cyprus after their aircraft were abruptly diverted last week to avoid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran.
Since then, thousands more have traveled there in hopes of using Cyprus, the nearest European country, as a depot to find a flight or chartered boat that will take them back to their families in Israel.
Levitan, 44, has a flight booked next week and said he is eager to rejoin his eight children and one grandchild in Ramla, 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Tel Aviv. His eldest daughter, 18, recently gave birth and is looking after her siblings with help from her grandparent.
'We're waiting for the moment when we can get back,' Levitan said. 'In the meantime, we here are helping however we can all the people who are stuck her in Larnaca, in Cyprus.'
Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin, the Jewish faith's leader in Cyprus, said the island's 14 rabbis mobilized from the moment the first 2,400 people arrived aboard at least 10 Israel-bound passenger aircraft that were diverted to Cyprus' main airport in Larnaca on June 12.
Finding accommodation all at once for so many people at the height of the tourist season was a huge challenge. There also was the issue of providing hundreds of kosher meals, which was handled by the community center, or Chabad, he said.
'Above to this, new flights have started to arrive from Hungary, from Rome, from Georgia, from New York, all people who are on the way ended up here with the hope that since Larnaca and Paphos are the closest nearby neighbor of Israel, once the flights will begin, they will be the first shuttle to go,' Raskin said.
Locals have provided shelter while doctors have treated travelers in need, he said.
Some were desperate to return to Israel right away, Raskin said, including two mothers with kids with special needs. Thankfully, they departed Wednesday aboard a pair of EL AL aircraft that landed at Ben Gurion airport.
'To take people back to Israel, obviously there are priorities. Priorities would be elderly people, single mothers, nurses, people who need medical issues,' he said. 'Anyone that is in urgent would get a priority to go on the flight.'
Raskin pulled out all the stops to secure a seat on the same flight for a groom whose wedding was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. He later got a message that the young man was able to attend the ceremony promptly at 4 p.m.
A few who could afford it and weren't prone to seasickness rented boats or yachts for the 20-hour trip to Israel. But arranging boat trips has been a fickle affair, Raskin said, as many voyages were cancelled at the last minute.
Raskin has vaulted into the role of coordinator for thousands of Israelis who see Cyprus as a springboard to Israel.
'Why this should be like a gate of a door to Israel?' he said. 'It's like I'm being now at the western wall of Israel.'
But he advised against more people using Cyprus as a stopover to catch a short flight or boat ride to Israel, given the difficulties faced by those who are already there.
'Do not come. We don't have enough rooms, we don't enough beds now in Cyprus to accommodate, unfortunately,' Raskin said. 'So if someone is in Budapest or in Vienna and you have a place to stay, to eat, stay there, you are safe there, don't rush to come. Once things will get better, yes, welcome.'

Southwest unveils Getaways with flights, hotels and 2 free bags

Southwest Airlines is wagering it can beat a Jet2 holiday. The company announced Tuesday, Aug. 19 Getaways by Southwest, a package vacation booking platform that lets customers shop for all-inclusive itineraries along with their flights. "Getaways by Southwest expands what customers love about Southwest—flexibility, an award-winning Rapid Rewards loyalty program, and great perks—to the vacation experience," Phil Gouel, Vice President Product Development at Southwest Airlines, said in a statement. "This end-to-end vacation package, coupled with our legendary customer service, is perfect for customers seeking a convenient, valuable, and curated vacation experience." According to Southwest, packages that include flights, hotel accommodations, car rentals and ground transportation are available to popular destinations like Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii and various Caribbean locations. Customers who book their whole trip on the Getaways platform will also be able to check up to two bags for free – a throwback to Southwest's former bag policy. Getaways also offer travelers some flexibility if their plans change. Customers who book through the Getaways platform can cancel their trip and receive credit toward a future vacation, valid for up to 18 months. They can also make changes to existing itineraries without incurring a change fee up to 72 hours before their first flight. Customers can see the deals and terms and conditions for each package on Southwest's website. Getaways is the latest update from Southwest that makes it similar to other airlines. The company has been overhauling its business strategy in recent months, doing away with open seating and free checked bags for all in a bid to compete more evenly with other carriers. Southwest is also adding extra legroom seats across its fleet and overhauling its fares and boarding process. Zach Wichter is a travel reporter and writes the Cruising Altitude column for USA TODAY. Along the Wild Azalea Trail, hikers can find azaleas native to Louisiana in bloom during the spring, especially in March and April. During this time, pinkish-white azaleas can be spotted along streams and creek bottoms, says Heart of Louisiana. When these wild flowers bloom in the spring, butterflies are often attracted and can be seen fluttering from flower to flower. While walking, hikers are also likely to catch a whiff of the azaleas' sweet fragrance. Louisiana's Wild Azalea Trail is located in Woodworth at 352-398 Castor Plunge Rd, although, trailheads can also be found at Woodworth's Town Hall and the Valentine Lake Recreation Area. A Delicious Fortress In Malta

The relatively small island of Malta is home to a lot of world history. Given its strategic position in the Mediterranean, its residents did not fare well in World War II. However the country has made a great recovery since and its gorgeous harbors have endless views and its urban areas are home to a number of UNESCO heritage sites. While it is beautiful to gaze upon a historic building, it is even more fun to stay in one. That was the one-of-a-kind experience I had seeing the Cugó Gran Macina. The bulk of the hotel's 21 rooms are built into a fortress that dates back to the 16th Century and many of those rooms front on the harbor. The hotel is located in the historic town of Senglea, one of the official 'Three Cities of Malta." The building that the Cugo Gran Macina is currently housed in was a former British naval fortress constructed in 1554, by the Knights of St. John, that has been meticulously restored to retain its original grandeur while incorporating subtle, and useful, contemporary elements. I was curious as to how the restaurant's intimate dining space the Little Bastion synergized with the building itself in terms of both style and atmosphere. Two of my favorite foods at the restaurant were the crunchiest rolls I have ever experienced and a Trompe-l'œil take on watermelon posting as tuna for vegan guests. So, I sat down with the head chef Johann Costa to discuss his menu. All responses have been edited and condensed for clarity. Liza B. Zimmerman: How is the restaurant influenced by the age of the structure that the hotel was built in? Johann Costa (J.C.): The Little Bastion is shaped by the history that surrounds it. Built within a set of centuries-old fortifications, the restaurant reflects the charm and character of the original structure—its limestone walls, vaulted ceilings and timeless atmosphere. This historic setting creates a unique and intimate dining experience, where our food pays respect to local tradition while bringing in fresh, modern flavors. L.B.Z.: How has the food evolved since the restaurant's opening? J.C.: Since the opening, our food has grown more refined and we still focus on fresh ingredients and bold Mediterranean flavor. We also put a lot of care into seasonality by working closely with local suppliers, farmers and fishermen. L.B.Z.: How traditionally Maltese is the food? J.C.: Our food is mainly Mediterranean, but it's strongly influenced by Maltese traditions. We use lots of local ingredients and traditional cooking methods. While the menu isn't focused exclusively on Maltese cuisine, we ensure there is always a touch of our roots present as those flavors are an important part of it. For larger events, guests sometimes ask for a traditional Maltese menu and we're happy to offer a special set menu with classic Maltese dishes. L.B.Z.: How does being located in such an ancient place in Malta affect the food? J.C.: The history around us reminds us to honor local ingredients, traditions and the people who came before us. It pushes us to create food that feels timeless, not just trendy. L.B.Z.: How does the structure of the hotel blend into and support the vibe of the restaurant? J.C.: The hotel and the restaurant are not separate entities—they're part of a magnificent fortress. The Little Bastion has inherited the hotel's atmosphere of calm luxury and immense history. The bastion, the fortifications, the views all shape the mood for diners. It's a space where architecture and cuisine echo one another as both are steeped in tradition and designed to be quietly extraordinary.
