Deion Sanders jumps into Mel Kiper-Mario Cristobal feud after Shedeur draft fallout

The Colorado Buffaloes coach showed love for ESPN star and vocal Shedeur Sanders proponent Mel Kiper Jr. on Thursday after the draft analyst's war of words with Miami football coach Mario Cristobal boiled over this week.
'But I Love u my man! You stood on the desk with great balance 10 toes down and said what u doggone said & didn't flinch. You knew what time it was my man & we're blessed to be right where God wanted us to be. 'With OPPORTUNITY' they forgot I was in the tv/entertainment business for 20 years before coaching,' Sanders posted on X.

The 57-year-old Sanders was responding to a fiery message written Wednesday by Kiper, who hit back at Cristobal for comments made about the 2025 NFL Draft process, in which the coach said he spoke with an estimated 'million people' about former Miami quarterback Cam Ward — the No. 1 overall selection by the Titans — but the ESPN personality was not one of them.
'Mario Cristobal claims he spoke to a million people about Cam Ward, yet the one he didn't speak to, being me, had Ward ranked higher (6th on my Big Board) than any of the other draft experts. Interesting isn't it. And oh by the way, I didn't speak to Deion about Shedeur either. I need another Orange Crush after this nonsense,' Kiper wrote.

Kiper's passion for the 23-year-old Shedeur was on full display during last month's NFL draft, when the polarizing prospect stunningly slid to the fifth round and was selected No. 144 overall by the Browns.
Although Ward landing with the Titans had long been a lock, much of Kiper's draft commentary was centered on Shedeur, even after the Giants — who had done the most homework on Sanders' son — traded back into the first round to select Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart at No. 25 overall.
'Surprised he went ahead of Shedeur, not shocked, because [coach Brian] Daboll wants mobility,' Kiper said at the time.

In the days following the draft, Kiper said he wasn't privy to the online chatter centered on his Shedeur-heavy commentary.
'I didn't even know about it,' Kiper said on 'The Adam Schefter Podcast' in late April. 'I was told, [ESPN vice president and executive producer] Seth Markman comes in and says, 'Mel, you're trending on Twitter.' I don't know what they said, I kind of believe it wasn't nice, but I didn't read one of them, but I was told I was trending over Shedeur Sanders.'

With the late-round addition of Shedeur, the Browns entered spring practices with five quarterbacks — four if you omit ailing starter Deshaun Watson, who is recovering from an Achilles injury, putting his 2025 availability into question.
He'll compete for the starting job alongside Joe Flacco, now on his second stint in Cleveland, former Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, taken No. 94 overall by the Browns in the third round.
'I feel like the Browns fans they just want something to hope for and they've been wanting it so long and long,' Shedeur recently said. 'And finally, I'm here to change that, I'm here to actually get what they want.'
Shedeur will likely see some preseason action this summer before the Browns' opener on Sept. 7, when Cleveland hosts AFC North rival Cincinnati.

Mount Carmel soars past Nazareth in sectional with Jake Matise on mound. His teammates know why. ‘This kid deals.'
Before the season, it would have been easy for opponents to overlook uncommitted junior righty Jake Matise on a Mount Carmel pitching staff that featured guys going to Miami and Notre Dame. But Matise has blossomed into the ace. He was named the Catholic League Blue's pitcher of the year. And he felt really good about his chances Wednesday night against a loaded Nazareth team. 'Every time, I just know what I'm capable of,' Matise said. 'I trust my preparation and I know what I'm able to do, so it's pretty easy to go out there every time and be confident in myself.' Matise backed up that confidence, allowing just two hits in a complete game as the Caravan knocked off the Roadrunners 6-1 in a Class 4A Reavis Sectional semifinal that was played at Triton College in River Grove due to field conditions from the rain. Wake Forest recruit TJ McQuillan went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run for fifth-seeded Mount Carmel (25-13), while Illinois commit Joey Ireland contributed a two-run single. Wharton County recruit Kolin Adams scored three runs and Anthony Chavez added an RBI double. Mount Carmel will take on top-seeded Brother Rice (34-3) — a 2-1 winner over Oak Park-River Forest — at 11 a.m. Saturday in the sectional final at Reavis. The Catholic League Blue rivals split two regular-season games. Matise, meanwhile, retired the first 12 batters for second-seeded Nazareth (31-7). He attacks the zone. He's able, in these big games, to slow the game down and not make the moment bigger than it is and just execute.' Matise has formed a strong duo with Notre Dame recruit Connor Elenteny as Miami commit Ian Tosi missed the entire season due to an injury. 'With Ian hurt, I kind of had to fill in a bigger role and take over his spot, and I think I've done it well,' Matise said. 'I'm not too worried about not getting a lot of attention before. 'I'm glad for those guys and where they're going to college, but hopefully I'm going somewhere, too. There were some coaches out here.' Matise (8-1) — whose the lone loss came way back on March 29 against Lockport — could hardly believe it when he found out he was the Catholic League Blue's pitcher of the year. 'That actually really caught me by surprise,' Matise said. 'I wasn't really thinking about it. Then my coach calls me in the morning and he tells me, and I was just in shock. 'I was like, 'Whoa, I really did this. I really won it, in the CCL Blue, the best conference, in my opinion.' It's really a huge honor. It's super cool.' Mount Carmel took a quick lead Wednesday night on McQuillan's RBI double in the first inning and broke things open with four runs in the third. The Caravan knew Matise would take it home from there. 'This kid had a no-hitter through four innings and only gave up two hits in seven innings against Nazareth,' McQuillan said. 'That's a great team over there, but we felt really confident with him out there. This kid deals.' Junior catcher Mario Medina took that belief in Matise a step further. 'In my eyes, every time Jake's out there, it's a win,' Medina said. 'We've just got to have the bats to back him up.' Matise, who has pitched since he was 6 years old, has been totally focused on that aspect of the game since he started high school and gave up hitting. There's a simple reason why he loves his position. 'Just getting other dudes out,' he said. 'It feels good.'

Is Myles Garrett's absence from Browns OTAs meaningless or a problem?
We have hit the portion of the NFL offseason that can often lead to frustration for fans and media: Voluntary OTAs. The Cleveland Browns started their first OTA session on Tuesday following Memorial Day. In between voluntary activities is a mandatory minicamp where players are subject to fines if they decide to skip. Currently, the Browns do not seem to have any player with a contract dispute (unlike down in Cincinnati and other places) so, barring excused absences, the whole team should be in attendance starting on June 10th. Advertisement The most notable absence from the first session of voluntary (there is that word again) OTA is DE Myles Garrett. Fresh off an offseason where he demanded a trade before signing a huge contract extension, Cleveland's star defender is taking in the sights and, seemingly, house hunting in Japan (via his Instagram Story): In general, fans expect players to give their all to the sport and their team. Given Garrett's huge new contract, those expectations are even greater. All in all, Garrett's absence is mostly meaningless. Early offseason activities are focused on simple installs of formations and teaching techniques. Garrett, and other veterans not in attendance, have little need for those things, which allows coaches to spend more time with the new and younger players. Advertisement Where attendance can be helpful is for positions that require as much timing work as possible. Quarterbacks and receivers can use the repetitions to get a better connection, as can offensive linemen in learning to work together. While it can be helpful, teams can be very successful without having everyone in attendance at voluntary activities. If Cleveland struggles in 2025, it will have nothing to do with Garrett being in Japan. Are the optics potentially problematic given his offseason complaints? Sure, but all that matters are things that directly impact performance on the field. Missing voluntary activities are unlikely to do so. Fans will always want more from the highest-paid players on a team and, especially, after Garrett's offseason trade request. Could it help his leadership role, his teammates' buy-in and fans' opinions if he were at every activity? Most certainly. Will it have any kind of significant impact on the results of the 2025 season? Unlikely. Unfortunately, there is no way to prove one way or the other.
