How a loaner car led to Azril's classic Mercedes collection
Within just five years of falling in love with Mercedes cars, Mohd Azril Bahaman now has 10 luxury classic vehicles in his collection. (Mohd Azril Bahaman pic)
KUALA LUMPUR : Mohd Azril Bahaman's passion for classic cars, specifically those of the German brand Mercedes Benz, began by chance when his neighbour let him borrow a vintage model after his own car broke down.
This opened a new chapter for the 45-year-old, who now proudly owns 10 luxury classic cars – a dream he has realised within five years of falling in love with the brand.
His collection includes editions such as the 1982 Mercedes C123 Coupe, 1987 190E, 1982 C126 Coupe, 1985 S123 Wagon, and 1990 S124 Wagon, as well as modern models like the 2010 W204 – valued cumulatively at about RM900,000.
'In 2020, my Audi broke down, so my neighbour offered to lend me his old Mercedes while my car was being repaired. Once I drove it, I instantly fell in love. It felt different – soft and comfortable despite being an older model,' Azril, a business consultant, recalled.
'One of my favourite models in my collection is the W123 Wagon, which was produced between 1975 and 1986. Everything in that car is original, from the carpet and seats to the dashboard… it still has the factory scent even after nearly 40 years.'
He admits to having faced many challenges while building his collection, including being scammed and having to deal with the high costs involved. But this hasn't deterred him or diminished his passion for classic cars.

Azril, who hails from Maran, Pahang, said the first classic car he owned was a 1987 Mercedes 190E. Since then, a wide network within the community of Mercedes enthusiasts has helped him acquire his dream vehicles at much lower prices.
Still, certain cars, especially two-door models, tend to be more expensive and harder to negotiate for than four-door versions, owing to their limited production and rarity in the market.
Azril also shared that not every car he buys is in good condition: some require costly restoration work before they can regain their value in the market.
Nevertheless, he believes it is worth it. 'Investing in classic cars is becoming more popular because their value increases over time, unlike regular cars that depreciate. For example, a Mercedes W123 Coupe used to cost RM70,000, but can now fetch RM200,000.
'Rare models like the Pagoda can even reach over RM1 million,' he noted.

Azril recalled an incident when he was scammed by a workshop owner who charged him RM5,000 for repairs that actually only cost around RM150. This became a turning point for the father of two, pushing him to deepen his knowledge about Mercedes cars through enthusiast communities.
He now shares his knowledge about these luxury vehicles, including maintenance and care tips, on social media. To date, he has amassed over 335,000 followers via his 'Klasik Mercedes Malaysia' Facebook and TikTok accounts.
'I'm not running a business – I just enjoy sharing information about classic cars,' Azril explained, adding that he has also thus far listed 120 reliable classic-Mercedes workshops across Malaysia to help users access repair and maintenance services.
On the topic of maintenance, he pointed out that spare parts for Mercedes models from the 1980s onwards are still widely available in Malaysia, while parts for older models are harder to find and often require special sourcing, including from overseas.
As for the future, Azril dreams of opening a gallery or café that includes a Mercedes exhibition space, where enthusiasts can gather and share their experiences about these cars.

Putera Adam 1st M'sian to secure podium finish in European race
Motorsport racer Putera Adam Halim Muazzam and his French teammate, Paul Levet, celebrating their victory in Italy. (Instagram pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia's rising star in motorsport racing, Putera Adam Halim Muazzam, made history yesterday by becoming the first Malaysian driver to secure a podium finish at the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe 2025 championship in Italy. The success came after Putera Adam, 19, and his French teammate, Paul Levet, representing the VSR team, won the second race in the PRO category at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Initially, they faced challenges with their Huracan EVO2 car in the first race, forcing them to settle for sixth place despite starting from pole position. However, their extraordinary comeback was evident in the second race when Putera Adam, starting from eighth on the grid, successfully overtook other drivers to take third place. VSR team's strategic driver change at the opportune moment gave them an advantage as Levet's energetic driving put the Italy-based team in the lead. Levet overtook the then-leader, Calle Bergman of the Leipert Motorsport team, before maintaining consistent driving and finishing the race in first place with a time of 48 minutes 45.387 seconds. 'It was a very challenging week for us as we couldn't do any free practice beforehand and the car suffered an alternator failure in the first race,' said Putera Adam in a statement. 'However, Levet and I managed to overcome the previous day's disappointment to lift our first trophy in this Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe 2025 championship.' Putera Adam and Levet are now in fifth place overall with 26 points in the championship. They will continue their challenge in round three at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit, Belgium, from June 26 to 28.

Grab gears up to enter Singapore's motor insurance game
SINGAPORE. June 2 — GrabInsure, the insurance arm of the ride-hailing giant Grab, is preparing to roll out its own motor insurance offerings in Singapore, The Straits Times (ST) reported today. According to ST, the company took a key step in May by joining the General Insurance Association (GIA), having secured a general insurance licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) late last year. Since then, Grab has quietly been building up a motor insurance team, with recent job listings and recruitment activity pointing to an imminent market debut. A job advertisement reviewed by ST showed GrabInsure is seeking a lead in motor claims to drive its claims strategy, profitability and systems development. The role, based at the firm's one-north campus, will work with its Operational Product Technology team to build a motor claims system from scratch. Grab is also reportedly working with headhunters to hire actuaries and underwriters, with interviews already under way. When approached, a Grab spokesman confirmed that the company is 'in the early stages of exploring motor insurance products, alongside other propositions'. She added that the offerings are being developed to meet the needs of its driver-partners, and that the company 'will share further updates as plans develop'. Grab's entry into the motor insurance sector comes as no surprise to some in the industry, given its existing foothold in the insurance space. The company launched its first consumer insurance product in 2020 through a partnership with Chubb, offering travel insurance via its app. It has since added personal accident coverage, also underwritten by Chubb. Industry observers told ST the next step into motor insurance is a strategic one. 'The ability to have mass outreach via the Grab app to hundreds of thousands of consumers simultaneously trumps any marketing and distribution channels available to incumbents like Income,' said one veteran insider, who declined to be named. 'Grab will not need to spend on commissions or marketing — known as 'acquisition costs' — giving it a major cost advantage.' According to data from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore had 90,383 private-hire cars at the end of 2024 — a potential captive market for GrabInsure's offerings. Income Insurance currently leads the motor insurance segment with S$92.3 million (RM304.6 million) in gross written premiums in Q1 2025, capturing a 25 per cent market share.
