Arsenal edge Man Utd 1-0 despite Red Devils' dominant display
Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal at Old Trafford. The Italian defender pounced on a mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.
The Red Devils had 22 shots and enjoyed over 60 percent possession. But an expensively-assembled new £200 million ($416 million) forward line of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and substitute Benjamin Sesko failed to find a way through against the Premier League's best defence for the past two seasons.
Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table.

But Amorim insisted the performance showed tangible signs of progress, even if it was not reflected in the scoreline.
'We need to win games but that was completely different to last season,' said the Portuguese coach.
'We were the better team. In the end we lose the game, but really proud of the performance.
'We proved today we can win any game in the Premier League, against a great team like Arsenal.'
After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title since 2004.

'Big result,' said Arteta. 'First game of the season at Old Trafford when you feel they are building something.'
He conceded his side will have to be much better if they are to rival Liverpool and Manchester City for the title.
'It certainly gives you momentum and confidence when you are not at your (top) standards.
'Today we weren't, to be fair. The team has to find that resilience through nine, 10 months of the season.
'We have to improve a lot of things and that will happen very soon.'

The new arrivals have lifted the mood around Old Trafford and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the display of Amorim's men.
Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on.
United were undone by an error from Bayindir, deputising for the injured Andre Onana.
The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori to head into an unguarded net.
Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that hit the post.
Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the goal.
Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before instead pursuing Viktor Gyokeres as the solution at number nine.
The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour by Kai Havertz.
Sesko made his entrance moments later, to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions.
United continued to enjoy the better of the play without finding the finish. Mbeumo's powerful header was expertly clawed out by Raya.
Arsenal held firm to keep up with Liverpool and City, who both scored four goals to win on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Gold Coast Suns mentor Damien Hardwick has described his Port Adelaide counterpart Ken Hinkley as an 'incredible coach' and believes he hasn't received the 'plaudits' he has deserved. Hinkley, 58, will coach Port for the final time on Friday night when the Power meet a ninth-placed Suns team desperate to seal a top-eight berth for the first time in the club's history., While intent on ensuring Hinkley's 13-year Power tenure ends on a losing note at Adelaide Oval, Hardwick is full of admiration for Hinkley. 'Ken's an incredible coach,' said Hardwick, who won an AFL premiership as a Port player in 2004. 'He's a guy I hugely admire, the way he goes about it. It's a shame he hasn't got the plaudits I think that he deserves. 'He's a guy that every time you play Port Adelaide, you know you're up for a hell of a fight, so I think he's done an incredible job.' Hinkley, a former Suns assistant coach, this week said it 'stings a lot' that he was unable to not only guide Port to a flag during his Power stint, but also failed to lead them to a grand final appearance, having lost four preliminary finals. 'You look at the results of a coach, and ultimately your result is to get to a grand final and win a grand final,' he said 'As harsh as that it is, we didn't get there.' Hardwick has got to the promised land as a coach, guiding Richmond to premierships in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also wants to take the Suns to a flag, but his immediate aim is securing finals football. Wins in their final two games of the regular season against Port and next Wednesday at home against Essendon would go a long way towards sealing Gold Coast a top-four berth. However, victory on Friday night will at least ensure they would have locked up a top-eight spot and September action heading into next week's clash with the Bombers. 'It's a two-game season for us,' Hardwick said. 'We're out of the eight at the moment, looking to win both games. 'We'll take one game at a time, but we've got all our eggs in this (Friday night) basket. 'We've got to make sure we play at our very best. There's going to be a lot of emotion around the game, 'You don't get the opportunity to play in those games often, (so) let's enjoy it, let's lean into it.' Victory on Friday would also secure the Suns their first win at Adelaide Oval at their 13th attempt. 'You've got to work you way through it. Every away venue is incredibly tough to play at – it's AFL footy,' Hardwick said. 'Every venue's got it's own challenges and this is no different.'

Jaiden Kucharski's services in demand after his release from embattled Western United
Perth Glory are the frontrunners ahead of Adelaide United to sign Jaiden Kucharski after the attacker was released by Western United just six weeks after joining the crisis-torn A-League club. United announced on July 8 that the former Sydney FC forward had signed a two-year deal with the Victorian outfit. However, United has been banned from registering 23-year-old Kucharski after being sanctioned by FIFA from doing so due to a financial dispute between the club and its former championship-winning striker Aleksandar Prijovic. The ban meant Kucharski, as well as club captain Ben Garuccio, who re-signed with United after becoming a free agent, were unable to play in the team's 1-0 Australia Cup round-of-32 loss to Sydney FC last month. Since then United's problems have worsened, with the club having been stripped of its A-League licence by Football Australia on August 8 for failing to meet the criteria required to compete in the national men's and women's competitions. United's financial woes include a multimillion-dollar tax bill reportedly owed by the club's chairman Jason Sourasis, and players and staff receiving their monthly wages late in April, May and June. The club announced in May that KAM Melbourne, a subsidiary of American company KAM Sports, would become United's new majority investor. However, the Australian Professional Leagues is yet to receive KAM Melbourne's full ownership proposal – understood to be worth $100m when including the purchase of the club's parent company Western Melbourne Group – and therefore cannot approve it. United has until 10am on Thursday to lodge its appeal against being stripped of its licence. In the meantime, United players – who this month were paid ahead of schedule and also received overdue superannuation payments – continue to train despite their futures remaining in limbo. However, Kucharski and United have mutually and 'respectfully' agreed to part ways due mainly to the FIFA registration ban. 'While the club is disappointed with this outcome, we respect the player's decision to pursue his career elsewhere,' United said in a statement. Sydney FC coach Ufuk Talay said on Wednesday that a possible Kucharski return to the Sky Blues had been discussed within the club. 'He's one of our boys that have come all the way through the academy,' Talay said. 'We will always have Jaiden back. We'll always provide a platform and an environment for him to come back in, and try to give him that opportunity to take the next step again.'

Mary Fowler update sends fans into frenzy as injured Matildas superstar returns to training ground
Mary Fowler has sent fans wild after sharing a promising injury update, revealing she is back training just four months after she went under the knife following a horror knee injury. The Matildas superstar ruptured her ACL during Manchester City's Women's FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester United on April 13. It was a brutal blow for the 22-year-old, who was having a career-best year, scoring 10 goals across all competitions for City, and establishing herself as a first-team regular. Fowler's return is still likely months away but it is a promising sign for Matildas fans, with the forward racing the clock to make Australia's Asian Cup campaign in March 2026. And the positive updates comes after Australian boss Joe Montemurro revealed her recovery is going better than expected. 'I spoke to her the other day and she's on track,' Montemurro said last month. 'She's in Sydney at the moment doing some running. 'She's looking good, and she should be hopefully back playing before November.' Fowler has only recently headed back to Europe after spending several weeks Down Under with her rugby league superstar boyfriend, Nathan Cleary and her family. The Matildas star was spotted cheering Cleary on at games, hand-in-hand with him at Panthers HQ and out with the halfback as they took several strolls around the beaches.
