Free legal services for ex-servicemen launched
A dedicated Legal Services Clinic was inaugurated at the District Sainik Welfare Officer's office in Kovuru Nagar by District Judge and DLSA Chairman, Justice E Bhimarao, as part of the Veer Nari Pariwar Sahayata Yojana 2025, launched by the National Legal Services Authority.
Speaking at the inauguration, Justice Bhimarao described the services and sacrifices of ex-servicemen and Veer Naris as invaluable. He assured that the DLSA would always stand by them, providing free legal assistance for pension, land disputes, family matters, and other legal issues.
Special panel advocates and para-legal advisors will be stationed at the clinic to offer timely help. DLSA Secretary and Senior Civil Judge N Rajashekar said the initiative was taken under the directives of the State Legal Services Authority, with excellent arrangements made by District Sainik Welfare Officer P Thimmappa.
Panel Advocate Shashikala expressed her commitment to continue offering free legal aid, noting her 20 years of service with DLSA.
Officer Thimmappa revealed that there are 4,473 ex-servicemen and Veer Naris in the district and thanked the judiciary for setting up the clinic. He also highlighted the recent establishment of a SPARSH Common Service Centre to address pension-related issues.
The event was attended by veterans' association leaders, staff, and beneficiaries, who welcomed the move as a significant step toward ensuring the welfare of those who served the nation.

Assam guv urges Sainik Welfare Board to reach out to ex-servicemen
Guwahati, Aug 13 (PTI) Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday urged the Sainik Welfare Board to reach out to ex-servicemen across the state to ensure that welfare measures are effectively implemented and accessible to all. The governor, during a meeting with top officials of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare at the Raj Bhawan here, called for concerted focus on the welfare and empowerment of ex-servicemen and Veer Naris (war widows) in the state. Acharya engaged in a threadbare discussion on strengthening welfare initiatives for leveraging the skills, discipline, and experience of ex-servicemen in the development of society and nation-building, an official release said. He also pointed out ways in which the Sainik Welfare Board can serve as a catalyst for the empowerment of ex-servicemen and the integration of the nation. The meeting was attended by former Eastern Command's GOC-in-C Lieutenant General (Retd) Rana Pratap Kalita, Director of Sainik Welfare, Brigadier (Retd)Palash Choudhury, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor S S Meenakshi Sundaram, and other senior officials. Laws can be used to protect SC/ST people from atrocities: Legal Services Authority
People belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities can protect themselves from atrocities by effectively using relevant laws, said K. Ratna Prasadu, Secretary of the erstwhile West Godavari District Legal Services Authority. An awareness programme focusing on Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955 and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was held on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) at the District Legal Services Authority office here. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prasadu said that if police stations fail to register a complaint, private complaints can be filed directly in the courts. Under the provisions of the SC/ST Act, a vigilance and monitoring committee headed by the District Collector must be constituted in every district, meeting once every three months to review the progress of cases related to SCs and STs. The governments are responsible for protecting witnesses and ensuring compensation to victims. In case of difficulties in obtaining compensation, victims are advised to approach the District Legal Services Authority, he said. Quoting the Protection of Civil Rights Act, Mr. Prasadu stressed that it is the government's duty to safeguard the rights of every citizen and ensure their freedom to live with dignity. If these basic rights are violated, individuals can seek assistance from the District Legal Services Authority. Eluru DSP Sravan Kumar, advocate P. Ratna Raju, social worker Methar Ajay Babu, and others were present.
