M'sian drivers who jump queue at S'pore checkpoints risk ban, warns ICA

PETALING JAYA : Singapore has warned motorists, including Malaysians, that they risk severe penalties, including blacklisting and a possible ban, if they jump queue at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said it will be on the lookout for inconsiderate drivers, especially in view of the June school holidays, The Straits Times reported.
Mardiana Masdar, team leader at the integrated operations centre at the Woodlands checkpoint, said ground officers who spot vehicles jumping queue will alert the team at the operations centre.
They will relay this information to traffic controllers near the checkpoint to direct them to make a U-turn to rejoin the queue.
'If they are non-compliant, we will refer them to our secondary office, where we are able to show them CCTV footage of them cutting queue,' she said.
In June 2023, a Malaysian driver travelling from Singapore to Malaysia via the Woodlands checkpoint had refused to make a U-turn, and even drove off after being caught by ICA for trying to jump the queue.
Because of his non-compliance and dangerous driving, the driver and car were banned from entering Singapore.
The ICA said traffic is expected to be heavy at both land checkpoints during the June school holidays, particularly during the Hari Raya Haji weekend between June 6 and June 9.
The authority said that during the long Wesak Day weekend between May 8 and May 13, more than three million travellers crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.
The traffic volume peaked on May 9, with more than 546,000 travellers clearing immigration at both checkpoints in one day.

(Instagram pic) PETALING JAYA : A breath of fresh air seems to have permeated the Malaysian badminton scene recently, thanks to some superb performances by the men's doubles pairs. At the forefront of this is world No 3 pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who have already created a personal record of winning three titles in a year – the Badminton Asia Championships in April, the Thailand Open in May, and the Singapore Open on Sunday. Hot on their heels and showing lots of promise are world No 7 pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who have won two titles this year – the Indonesian Masters in January, and the Malaysia Masters last month, where they defeated Aaron-Wooi Yik in the final. As for world No 2 pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, there have been some disappointments this season after they won the India Open in January. They were eliminated in the early rounds in most of the other tournaments. They had done well before this, winning three titles in 2023, and another three last year. At the centre of these improved performances appears to be the new Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) doubles coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, who had engineered Indonesia's success in the men's doubles pairs previously. Aaron-Wooi Yik were quick to credit their recent successes to their new coach, also known as the 'Fire Dragon' back home, saying he had polished their game leading to their consistent performances. The question in the minds of Malaysian badminton fans is whether the duo, who are currently in top form, can go on to make it four titles in a year by winning the Indonesia Open, which starts today. Tough draw and venue While their current form and a great coach can work in their favour, the Indonesia Open's draw is expected to present them with some of their biggest obstacles. Drawn in the top half of the World Tour 1000 series, the Malaysians are likely to face three strong pairs before they even reach the semi-finals. In their opening tie, Aaron-Wooi Yik will have to face Denmark's world No 16 pair Frederik Sogaard-Rasmus Kjaer, whom they defeated 21-19, 24-22 at the Malaysia Masters. En route to the semi-finals, they could meet former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi of Japan, and India's Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Aaron-Wooi Yik could also face compatriots Wei Chong-Kai Wun and home pair Leo Rolly Carmando-Bagus Maulana. Former national player and coach James Selvaraj pointed out that Aaron-Wooi Yik have beaten these pairs several times, and that devising the right strategies with their coach would be key. While the Indonesia Open's venue – the Istora Stadium in Jakarta – has been known to be especially unfriendly to Malaysian players, Selvaraj said Aaron-Wooi Yik have grown in mental strength in recent tournaments, even making comebacks from the brink of defeat. 'Many Malaysian players seemed to have lacked this in the past but this quality is now being displayed by Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun. 'This augurs well for a possible fourth title in a year for Aaron-Wooi Yik,' he told FMT. Selvaraj added that overall consistency, which was lacking in the past, seems to be showing in these two pairs. 'Let's root for them to do it again.' At last year's Indonesia Open, Aaron-Wooi Yik were knocked out in the second round, while Wei Chong-Kai Wun were runners-up. The Indonesian Open offers total prize money of US$1.45 million. In the doubles events, the champions will pocket US$107,000 while the runners-up take home US$50,750.

‘What kind of person will do this?': Singapore's Yishun again under spotlight after new cat death
SINGAPORE, June 3 — Authorities are investigating after a cat was found dead with its legs unnaturally splayed at the foot of a staircase in Yishun, the National Parks Board (NParks) said today. The incident, which took place at Block 510A along Yishun Street 51, came to public attention on Sunday following a Facebook post that included photos of the animal's body, according to a report published in Channel News Asia. 'NParks received feedback on a cat found dead at the foot of a staircase at Yishun Street 51 and is looking into the matter,' the agency said in response to media queries. 'We urge the public not to speculate on the details of the case and allow investigations to run its proper course.' The Facebook post by the group Sayang Our Singapore's Community Cats claimed that a 24-hour hotline was contacted but no help was rendered, with a screenshot indicating the number belonged to a private veterinary clinic. The group also noted the discovery was made near a location where another cat had previously been found dead with serious injuries. Yishun has seen a series of similar incidents, with cats found either dead or injured under suspicious circumstances, raising concerns among animal welfare advocates and the public. Last month, Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam highlighted a particularly gruesome case in Yishun Street 51, where a cat was reportedly tortured, mutilated and left on the road. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), reports of animal cruelty and welfare cases in Singapore hit a 12-year high last year, with 961 cases recorded in 2024.

Holiday tragedy in Mersing: Teenage siblings drown while swimming at Pulau Mentigi beach
MERSING, June 3 — What was meant to be a joyful holiday back in their hometown ended in tragedy when two siblings drowned while swimming at the Pulau Mentigi beach here yesterday afternoon. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Mersing Zone director Maritime Commander Suhaizan Saadin said the deceased were Nur Awatif Udaima Mohd Hisam, 15, and her younger brother Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni, 13. He said the Malaysia Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor alerted them at 4.25pm to activate a search and rescue (SAR) operation, after which MMEA's patrol boat Perkasa 44 was deployed to the scene. 'According to the information received, the first victim, Nur Awatif Udaima, was found at the location where she drowned by the local community at 4.30pm. 'The Perkasa 44 boat and the islanders then expanded the search sector, and Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni was found through diving efforts by island residents at 6.30pm,' he said in a statement last night. Suhaizan said it is understood that the victims' family had returned to their village at Pulau Tinggi for the school holidays, and the family had gone to the beach, about 19 nautical miles from the Mersing coastline, for an outing. He added that the bodies were handed over to the Marine Police Force (PPM) and brought back to the Shahbandar Jetty. Meanwhile, Mersing District Police Chief Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said that the bodies of the siblings were sent to Mersing Hospital for post-mortem. — Bernama
