Islanders sign No. 1 pick Matthew Schaefer to a 3-year, entry level contract

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders have signed No. 1 draft pick Matthew Schaefer to a three-year, entry level contract. The team announced the deal Monday right around the time the young defenseman threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Mets' home game against the Cleveland Guardians. Schaefer is set to turn 18 next month just before training camp begins. Signing him to a contract does necessarily mean Schaefer is guaranteed to play this season in the NHL. The Islanders could decide to send him back to the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League. ___ AP NHL:

Islanders sign Matthew Schaefer to 3-year, entry-level contract

The New York Islanders have signed Matthew Schaefer, this year's No. 1 overall draft pick, to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced on Monday. Schaefer scored seven goals and 22 points in 17 games with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League this past season. His season ended after he injured his collarbone while playing with Team Canada during the 2025 World Junior Championship in Ottawa. The defenseman scored 10 goals and 29 assists in 73 career games with the Otters, earning All-Rookie Team honors during the 2023-24 campaign. Advertisement The Stoney Creek, Ont., native won a gold medal in 2024 with Team Canada at the U18 World Hockey Championship in Finland, and also captained Canada to a Hlinka Gretzky Cup victory the same year. Schaefer is the Islanders' fifth-ever first overall pick and their first since the drafted John Tavares in 2009. A very, very emotional moment for Matthew Schaefer ❤️ 🎥 @NHL | #NHLDraft — The Athletic (@TheAthletic) June 27, 2025

Islanders Sign No. 1 Pick Matthew Schaefer To Entry-Level Deal

The New York Islanders announced that they have signed No. 1 overall pick Matthew Schaefer to his entry-level deal. Just because Schaefer signed his ELC, that doesn't mean he's going to be on the NHL roster this fall. The soon-to-be 18-year-old's goal is to make the Islanders out of training camp, where he'll likely be battling with Isaiah George for the final starting blue-line spot. However, if Schaefer doesn't make the team, he'll be sent back to the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, where he must remain until the OHL season comes to an end before being recalled. Signing his ELC eliminates Schaefer from going the collegiate route. The most likely route for Schaefer and the Islanders is to give him a nine-game sample size at the NHL level before making a decision. Once Schaefer plays in NHL game No. 10, he will burn a year off his ELC, and that's not ideal, hence the nine-game sample size we see often around the league. Regardless of how this all plays out, signing his ELC is a huge moment for Schaefer and the franchise. PHOTO: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images
