Vancouver Canucks add three assistants to Adam Foote's coaching staff

(AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast) VANCOUVER — Newly minted Vancouver Canucks head coach Adam Foote is rounding out his coaching staff with three new additions. The team announced Thursday that former Chicago Blackhawks assistant coach Kevin Dean, former American Hockey League head coach Brett McLean and Vancouver's former director of player personnel Scott Young have all been named assistant coaches. 'The coaching search was a very thorough process as we wanted to find the best fit for our hockey club,' Canucks general manager Adam Foote said in a release. 'Once Adam was hired, we set out on selecting a team of assistant coaches who are good teachers, good communicators, and good people. Footey has done a great job in assembling a well-rounded staff with a strong mix of experience and position specific expertise. I am excited to watch this group come together and am ready to support them in every way I can to help them prepare for the upcoming season.' Dean, 56, comes to Vancouver following three seasons as an assistant coach with the Blackhawks. He also helped the United States — including Canucks forwards Conor Garland and Drew O'Connor — to a gold medal at the 2025 world championships last month. Known as a defensive specialist, Dean will take over Vancouver's penalty kill, Foote told reporters Thursday. 'I knew within the second or third phone call that this was the guy for us,' he said on a phone call from Toronto, where he was taking in a Blue Jays game. 'I'm very excited about him being down that side of the bench and letting him do his thing. I think he'll do a great job with our d corps.' McLean will be responsible for the power play, Foote added. The 46-year-old McLean joins the Canucks after two years as head coach of the Iowa Wild, the Minnesota Wild's AHL affiliate. He previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Wild, and played professional hockey for 18 seasons across seven different leagues, including the NHL. Young will be Vancouver's 'glue guy' who will help out with several different aspects of the team, Foote said. Young has been with the Canucks for three seasons and previously spent five years as director of player development for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He spent 17 years playing in the NHL and won Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh (1991) and Colorado (1996). The Canucks also announced Thursday that assistant coach Yogi Svejkovsky, defensive development coach Sergei Gonchar and video coach Dylan Crawford will not return next season. The moves come after former head coach Rick Tocchet parted ways with Vancouver in April and the club promoted Foote following his two years as an assistant coach on Tocchet's bench. Tocchet was later named head coach of the Flyers and Svejkovsky will join him in Philadelphia. 'There's zero hard feelings. (Svejkovsky) is a friend of mine,' Foote said. 'Rick developed me, developed him. And if that's where he's going to feel more comfortable … that is just fine.' Dean, McLean and Young join a Canucks' staff that includes player development coaches Daniel and Henrik Sedin, goaltending coach Marko Torenius, assistant video coach Ian Beckenstein, and skills and skating coach Jason Krog. The team is still looking to add another video coach, Foote said. This report by Gemma Karstens-Smith of The Canadian Press was first published June 5, 2025.

I talked to a lot of great hockey people and formed many important relationships. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to help me through this exercise. The group that we have brought together is a great mix of hockey people. Kevin has an impressive resume, an intelligent hockey mind, and has helped develop a lot of good defencemen. Brett and I met years ago and have stayed in touch, and I respect his hockey IQ. I have a long history with Scott, and we share a very strong bond. He has been in the organization for a few years and knows exactly how things work and what we need to do to be successful. Not only do I look forward to working with those guys, but I am also excited to continue my coaching partnership with Marko, Jason and the Sedins, who will still to be very involved in the coaching and teaching process." Dean joins the Canucks after three years with the Chicago Blackhawks. During his time as an assistant coach in the NHL, he has helped develop players such as Charlie McAvoy, Alex Vlasic, Torey Krug, and Derek Forbort. Dean was also behind the bench as an assistant for Team USA at the 2025 World Championship, where he helped the Americans win their first Gold Medal since 1933. Before becoming a coach, the 46-year-old played 385 NHL games, recording 56 goals and 162 points. McLean, who is from British Columbia, also spent time in the Western Hockey League, playing three and a half seasons with the Kelowna Rockets. Young is an internal hire, having been with the organization for the past three seasons. During that time, he served as the Director of Player Personnel. While Young has spent the majority of his career as a Director of Player Personnel, he did spend time behind the bench as an assistant coach at Boston University and was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics. Canucks: Kevin Dean brings big defensive book of work as new assistant coach
Kevin Dean knows about happiness and heartache. The former NHL defenceman, who also served an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins for the last eight seasons, is expected to join new Vancouver Canucks head coach Adam Foote behind the bench. His book of work suggests he is up for the challenge because the chapters span the sports spectrum of ecstasy and agony. Dean won two titles in 1995 as a big stay-at-home blueliner. The fifth-round selection of the New Jersey in the 1987 NHL Draft got his name on the Stanley Cup with the Devils, and also won a Calder Cup that season with the AHL affiliate Albany River Rats. New Jersey had Jacques Lemaire — the lover of low-event hockey — as head coach and Hockey Hall of Fame defenceman Larry Robinson as one of his assistants. Aside from that tutelage, Dean also played on the back end with veteran hard-rock Scott Stevens and emerging young star Scott Niedermayer. Quite the master class of instruction. Dean also suited up for the lowly Atlanta Thrashers in 23 forgetful games in 1999-2000 before moving on to the Dallas Stars. The Thrashers finished a league-worst 14-57-7-4 and were last in goals for, against and face-offs. Their leading goal scorers were Andrew Brunette (23) and Ray Ferraro (19). Dean would log 331 regular-season games with four teams and had 55 points (7-48) and 138 penalty minutes, the mark of a guy who took care of his own end. He retired as a player due to a heart condition and applied his knowledge as a coach in the AHL and ECHL before transitioning to the NHL. The Madison, Wisc. native had five seasons as an assistant with the Boston Bruins and then three with the Chicago Blackhawks. His latest run ended this season. Dean was also an assistant for Team USA at the world championship in May, where the Americans ended a 92-year title drought. I know we are in the midst of coach talk. But don't let it distract you from this wholesome picture of Alex Vlasic, Frank Nazar, and Kevin Dean🇺🇸 📸 via Instagram/ @ usahockey #Blackhawks In Boston, Dean became a close confidant of head coach Bruce Cassidy and had control of a back end when he arrived for the 2017-18 season. It featured top prospects in Charlie McAvoy, 19, Brandon Carlo, 20, and Matt Grzelecyk, 23. They were thrown into deep end of the competitive pool, logged 63, 76, and 61 games respectively, and were better for the experience. 'Dino (Dean) has done a really good job of showing me videos of situations where I can shoot — where I can go down the wall or get to the middle,' Carlo told the Boston Globe. 'So I feel that's been a lot of good help from him.' The Canucks will have Elias Pettersson , 21, Victor Mancini, 23, as part of their defensive mix next season and prospect Tom Willander, 20, could also see NHL games along with Kirill Kudryavtsev, 21. That plays right into Dean's development hand. In the neutral zone, Cassidy and Dean had players keep tight gaps. Blueliners were then taught pursue at an angle to force puck carriers to the outside instead a higher percentage of advancement through middle. Dean also instructed his blueliners to play within the face-offs dots in the defensive zone. 'That's where most of the action happens,' Dean reasoned. 'That's where most of the breakdowns happen. That's where most of the plays are made. Stay inside the dots, make your plays, and try not to get pasted on the wall.' The purpose was to gap up, negate the rush and then retrieve the puck. In Dean's second season with Chicago in 2023-24, he had rookie blueliners Kevin Korchinski, 19, and towering Alex Vlasic, 22, play 76 games apiece to fast forward their careers. bkuzma@
