Key target for Patrick Mahomes in concussion protocol after hitting head in practice

Patrick Mahomes' is short on receivers at the end of the Kansas City Chiefs' first week of training camp. Xavier Worthy, an emerging receiver and 2024 first-round draft pick, is in the concussion protocol, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. As a rookie, Worthy established himself as one of Mahomes' favorite targets, particularly late in the season. He finished the year with 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns. His production improved in the postseason. In the Chiefs' run to another Super Bowl appearance, Worthy led all playoff receivers in receptions (19), yards (287), and touchdowns (3). Worthy figures to play an instrumental role in the Chiefs' offense in 2025, as the status of Rashee Rice is uncertain due to his sentencing from a 2024 hit-and-run that is expected to result in a suspension. Another Chiefs receiver, Hollywood Brown, played just two games last season due to injury, and he is already unavailable in camp after getting carted off the first during Tuesday's practice. Chiefs receiver Skyy Moore, a 2022 second-round pick, is also currently sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Chiefs' passing game had its struggles last season, in large part due to injuries to Rice and Brown. Mahomes averaged a career-low 6.8 yards per attempt and tied a career low by throwing a touchdown on just 4.5% of his passes. Worthy seems unlikely to miss a regular-season game due to the head injury. The Chiefs will open their season in São Paulo, Brazil, against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5.
