Emmerdale's Matthew Wolfenden breaks silence on bitter 'race row' and suspension

Daily Mirror21-05-2025
Matthew Wolfenden has spoken for the first time about being suspended from his role on ITV's Emmerdale after appearing to mimic a Chinese accent on the set
Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden has revealed why he was suspended from the ITV soap opera and how it saw him suffer a nervous breakdown. The actor who plays local businessman David Metcalfe vanished from screens in 2021 alongside his co-star, Isabel Hodgins, who plays Victoria Sugden, leaving fans baffled.
At the time, it was reported that the pair had been embroiled in a heated row while filming scenes for Super Soap Week in the same year. Reports claimed that the pair came to blows while filming a scene which involved a waterfall, which aired on October 19, 2021. However, it later emerged that the soap had launched an investigation following claims of a race row.

But until now, Matthew, 45, has remained tight-lipped about his exit from the soap and has confirmed it came after they were accused of mimicking a Chinese accent around the workplace."We were falsely accused of doing an accent on set," he said.

Matthew went on to explain: "Whenever the word race is used, they have to take it seriously." He explained that a young cast member had mistakenly thought they'd heard the pair putting on a Chinese accent and later complained to a producer about the incident.
He stated that the younger cast member told a producer they were "not very happy" about what they had heard on the set of the Yorkshire-based soap opera. "So, because of this, we did have to get suspended because as soon as that's an issue, they have to go down the correct routes while they investigate what happens," Matthew said.
Speaking on Lewis Nicholls Life Stories, he went on to say: "Unfortunately when you get suspended from a continuing drama, you have to get written out of storylines and that is not an easy process because the storylines are written six weeks in advance, you film six weeks in advance and then it's on screen.
"So even if you're off for two weeks that could be three months of not being on screen." He said that he and Isabel had worked together a lot in the lead up to the suspension due to their characters being in a relationship and the pair loved watching comedies.

"So we were sat one day talking about what comedies we loved to watch and we were doing scenes, mimicking the scenes, doing the lines from the scenes," he said. He went on to add: "And I said to her, 'Have you ever seen the League of Gentlemen?'
"And there's a scene in the League of Gentlemen where Reece Shearsmith dresses up as a lady called Pam Doove and it's called the Orange Juice Scene if anyone wants to Google it and see what I mean. And he's playing an actress who comes into an audition room and is very eloquent - it's an old acting joke - and then the director says, 'Go out of the room and come back in and say 'Has anyone got a bottle of orange juice?' for an audition. [She returns and does it in a different accent]. "

He stated that the younger star had overheard the conversation and assumed that Matthew was mimicking the Chinese accent, which led to him being suspended over the alleged "race row". Matthew claims that bosses behind the soap urged him not to speak out publicly about the reason behind his suspension.
He told the podcast he "didn't have a leg to stand on" as the Emmerdale press team had instructed him to "stay quiet." Despite this, Matthew stated he was desperate to tell the truth and found it "difficult" not to speak out over an accusation of something he hadn't done.
He later explained he became unwell due to the mounting stress and suffered a nervous breakdown. "I ended up in The Priory for a month," he said. Matthew feared he'd lose his job and ended up hitting a "big spiral down" following the rumours. Despite his suspension, Matthew returned to the programme, but fortunately for him, the cast member who made the claim left while he was absent.

Matthew's character eventually left Emmerdale in 2023 after two decades on the soap. It was initially suggested that David could be killed off after Matthew expressed an interest in taking on other roles. However, David didn't die and he instead left to be with his ex Priya and their daughter Amba after learning that his son Jacob had fallen for his former partner Victoria. He couldn't cope with the new romance and decided he had no choice but to make his departure from the Dales, leaving both Jacob and Pollard devastated.
The Mirror approached Emmerdale for comment.

ITV 'launch formal investigation into Good Morning Britain' after shocking blunder

ITV have reportedly launched a formal investigation into an incident that sparked outrage on Good Morning Britain earlier this year on Holocaust Memorial Day ITV have reportedly launched a formal probe into Good Morning Britain after one 'humiliating blunder too big to ignore' left viewers outraged. The broadcaster's long-running early morning programme aired a tribute to the victims of one of history's biggest atrocities on Holocaust Memorial Day earlier this year. ‌ On that day, presenter Ranvir Singh was reporting and while she mentioned that the six million people killed in the death camps were 'disabled, gay or belonged to another ethnic group', but did not make it clear that that figure applied to solely the Jewish victims, and didn't appear to realise that there were 11 million victims in total. The episode in question aired on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in January, and it is now thought that the incident has become the subject of a formal investigation. ‌ A source told The Sun: "Good Morning Britain is a flagship programme for ITV and to allow a blunder like this was too big to simply ignore. They are now investigating how this happened and the top brass want answers. ITV pride themselves on their news coverage but this was lower than sub par." ‌ The insider also claimed that 'the probe will uncover who allowed it to happen and there will be consequences' for those involved, adding that it 'has been hugely humiliating and is a headache the bosses over at ITV really could do without.' The Mirror has approached ITV for comment on the probe they have launched. At the time, the blunder sparked outrage and Ranvir, who also regularly covers for Lorraine Kelly on her eponymous daytime show, was quick to apologise for her error. She said: "In yesterday's news when we reported on the memorial events in Auschwitz, we said six million people were killed in the Holocaust, but crucially failed to say they were Jewish. That was our mistake, for which we apologise." Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the show said: "In our studio introduction to the report on the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz we failed to acknowledge the Jewish community which we have since apologised for live on air in today's programme. "This failure was done in error, however clear reference to Jewish people in the correspondent news report from Auschwitz immediately followed, as well as a further extended programme report referencing the six million Jewish victims. Yesterday's programme also included a live studio interview with a survivor of Auschwitz, Rachel Levy alongside Olivia Marks-Woldman, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Memorial Trust, both of whom talked candidly about their own experiences as Jewish people." The clip came under fire on social media, with one person writing: "Disgusting shameful!" A second added: "This can't be for real?" "This coverage is utterly disgraceful! This history must not be forgotten, nor must it be distorted. The Jews were the victims then - we must make sure that they will never be the victims again," said another.

'I met the creepy doctor charged with supplying drugs to tragic Matthew Perry'

Dr. Salvador Plasencia, charged with supplying drugs to Matthew Perry, left one of his former patients 'with the creeps' after an 'odd' visit to his deserted surgery A reporter and super fan who was at Matthew Perry 's home hours after the star died says she met the doctor charged with supplying drugs to the star and he gave her the creeps. Katy Forrester has recalled what she saw the day the acting legend died back in 2023 - and the former patient of Dr. Salvador Plasencia says she knew something wasn't right about him. Matthew's doctor has pleaded guilty to supplying the Friends actor with ketamine before his tragic death. He admitted four counts to a federal court judge in Los Angeles last month, having branded the late actor a "moron" in text messages." He was one of five people who were charged in connection with the 54-year-old death two years ago. Now the former patient has given her account and says she had an 'incredibly odd' visit to the crooked physician. 'He'd given me the creeps,' the editor at The US Sun wrote. 'After filling out forms and heading into a private room, the same man then appeared in a white coat and joked he was not just the receptionist, he was also the doctor. 'When I realised who I'd been treated by and read the sweeping indictment, I felt slightly sick, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end." She went on to say in the article: "I have also witnessed the all-too-prevalent Hollywood culture of 'doctor shopping', which sees greedy, immoral doctors dishing out killer drugs to rich and famous addicts for a handsome profit." The actor was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, 2023. He died at 4.17pm on the same day, aged 54. An investigation found the cause of Perry's death to be ruled as an accident from the 'acute effects of ketamine', the exact manner of which came from drowning. He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 on NBC's mega hit sitcom, but he struggled with addiction for years, dating back to his time on the show, when he became one of the biggest stars of his generation as Chandler Bing. California-based Plasencia had already been charged following the death of much-loved Matthew. He has pleaded guilty to four counts of illegal distribution of the drug, which is used as a prescription anaesthetic. Prosecutors said that he now faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced. He had previously pleaded not guilty, but in exchange for the guilty pleas prosecutors agreed to drop three additional counts of distribution of ketamine and two counts of falsifying records. Prosecutors outlined the charges in court before the plea, and said along with Plasencia's lawyers that he did not sell Perry the dose that killed the actor. They described, and Plasencia admitted, that Perry froze up and his blood pressure spiked when the doctor gave him one injection, but Plasencia still left more ketamine for Perry's assistant to inject. In his memoir, he admitted that he struggled to watch Friends because it reminded him of the tough times he went through. 'I didn't watch the show, and haven't watched the show, because I could go, drinking, opiates, drinking, cocaine,' he later added. 'I could tell season by season by how I looked. That's why I don't wanna watch it, because that's what I see.' Perry explained: 'I was taking 55 Vicodin a day, I weighed 128 lbs, I was on Friends getting watched by 30 million people — and that's why I can't watch the show, 'cause I was brutally thin." 'I had a rule that I would never drink or do drugs while working,' he said. 'Because I had too much respect for the five people I was working with. So I was never wasted while working.'

Further complaints included concerns over contestants' mental health, the behaviour of Dejon Noel-Williams, and alleged race and gender-based discrimination. Ofcom stated that negative behaviour in the villa was not shown in a positive light, and contestants were seen supporting each other, adding that viewers would expect highs and lows from the established format. The 12th series of Love Island ran from June 9 to August 4 and was won by Toni Laites and Cach Mercer.
