'I would have...': Sourav Ganguly questions Gautam Gambhir's selection strategy; cautions Shubman Gill after India's Collapse for 471
After a dominant performance by India on Day 1, England bounced back with vigorous momentum on Day 2 of the first Test in Leeds on Saturday. The English bowlers showed a better performance, greater discipline and intensity, injecting much-needed momentum into their campaign. Amid this, Sourav Ganguly questioned the exclusion of the pacer and called out Gautam Gambhir's tactics. Let's find out what happened.
On Saturday, during the first hour of day 2, India was in control, while fans also got to see Rishabh Pant's performance, but soon England began to fight back, dismissing Shubman Gill for 147. This is when India folded for 471, losing seven wickets for only 41 runs.
Following this, there was a slight delay due to rain, after that, which led England to start to get control in their innings, facing Jasprit Bumrah. The 31-year-old bowler managed to send back Zak Crawley early, making chances, but his other teammates failed to capitalise on it.

Sourav Ganguly reacts to the India vs England clash
After a shaky start, Ollie Pope found his rhythm as the ball softened and the pitch eased up, eventually bringing up consecutive Test centuries. On the other hand, Bumrah managed to draw a flash stroke from Joe Root and dismissed Harry Brook, but both efforts were undone by no-balls in the final over.
Finally, with little support from other bowlers, Bumrah watched as England closed Day 2 at 209/3. Amid this, Sourav Ganguly reacted to the match by speaking to PTI.
According to Ganguly, India is in a strong position to reach 600 runs and said, "Nobody expects Headingley to be so dry. But what will happen is, if they get 600, it starts getting a bit up and down"
He added that India must win this as they won't get this opportunity again.
Sourav Ganguly calls out Gautam Gambhir for his selection decision
Ganguly went on to talk about Gautam Gambhir's selection decision too and said that he doesn't agree with Gambhir's selection, as Arshdeep Singh should have been picked ahead of Prasidh Krishna.
'Kuldeep will play slowly. It's a long series. I would have played Arsh. Because of a different angle (for being a left-hander). But it's okay. They're good,' he added.

Warning tip for Shubman Gill
The former Indian cricketer, along with calling Gambhir's selection, also shared a warning for the current Test captain. After analysing England's bowling departure, he felt that they bowled too short, and halfway through yesterday, they were bowling only short to Shubman Gill.
"But it's okay. They'll learn. It's just the first Test," Ganguly said.

Won't be easy for Virat and Rohit to play 2027 WC: Sourav Ganguly
It won't be easy for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to remain fit and find a place in India's ODI World Cup squad in 2027, former captain Sourav Ganguly says. "All of us must understand, just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game," Ganguly told PTI in a lengthy interview at his residence. The next ODI World Cup is scheduled in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia and by the time the prestigious ICC event is played Kohli will be 38 years old and Rohit will touch 40. Till then India have 27 ODIs to play spread across nine bilateral series. That means Kohli and Rohit will hardly get 15 international games a year. "It won't be easy, with 15 games a year," Ganguly said. With 25,000 runs and 83 international hundreds between them, both Kohli and Rohit have expressed their desire to play the 50-over global event after recently retiring from Test cricket. Ganguly, an exceptional ODI batter during his career, was asked if he had any word of advice for them. "I have got no advice. I think they know the game as much I do. They will take a call." Ganguly acknowledged that finding a player of the caliber of Kohli to replace him won't be easy, though he is not worried about Indian cricket after the retirement of the two stalwarts. "I was not concerned at all. Virat is a class player. Finding his replacement will take time. But the rest, I wasn't surprised." Talking about Yuvraj Singh, Ganguly said he was a special player who flourished in white-ball formats but did not get enough chances to touch his real potential in traditional format. "I remember seeing Yuvraj for the first tine in Nairobi and saw that he is special. What he went on to do for India after that in one-day cricket is unreal. He was 2007 World T20 player player of the series, 2011 World Cup, player of the series, runs, wickets fielding, he was special. "Unfortunately he did not get many opportunities in Test matches. He played about 30 odd Test matches, he got stuck between Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly and VVS Laxman, but a special player," he said. ENG vs IND, 1st Test Day 3 Live Score Updates: ENG (238/4) as Brook, Stokes keep hosts steady
Despite picking up a wicket in the morning session, Prasidh Krishna has largely bowled non-threatening balls. Fans are taking a notice and are asking the reasoning behind his selection in the English track. Live Score: England (252/4) trail India (471) by 219 runs. Ben Stokes (9*), Harry Brook (28*). Check out Ollie Pope's wicket from the morning session of play. It is the only wicket to fall so far. Just the start India wanted on Day 3✨#PrasidhKrishna strikes early, the centurion #OlliePope is gone! 💪 Yeh seekhne nahi, sikhaane aaye hain! 🇮🇳🔥#ENGvIND 1st Test Day 3 LIVE NOW Streaming on JioHotstar 👉 — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 22, 2025 Jasprit Bumrah bowls the first maiden over of the day, in what has been a quite free-scoring morning in India vs England. A couple of plays and misses from Ben Stokes. Stokes was lucky to not edge one back to the keeper on his big, booming drive. After that maiden over, Ravindra Jadeja replaces Prasidh Krishna. Live Score: England (244/4) trail India (471) by 227 runs. Ben Stokes (3*), Harry Brook (26*) Harry Brook has gained a lot of confidence from the two shots that he played against Prasidh Krishna in the first over. He now has found the courage to charge at Bumrah and hit him through the cover for four. I don't think that I have ever seen someone do that against Bumrah. 52.1: Jasprit Bumrah to Harry Brook, FOUR! Harry Brook on the charge! Bumrah serves it on a length, on off, Brook puts the dancing shoes on and gets his hands through the ball. Drills it through covers for a boundary. Live Score: England (237/4) trail India (471) by 234 runs. Ben Stokes (2*), Harry Brook (20*) A much needed wicket for India. And it has come from a nothing ball. Short and wide from Krishna in the first ball of his second over today. Pope wants to cut the ball, but top edges the ball back to the keeper. Live Score: England (225/4) trail India (471) by 246 runs. Ollie Pope (106), Harry Brook (10*) Windy, not windy, overcast, sunny. Nothing matters if you do not bowl a good ball. Prasidh Krishna has been taken to town by Harry Brook, who has smashed him for a four and a six. First one short, outside off, Brook cuts the ball for four through point. The second one, a nothing ball, and Brook rocks to the back foot and hits Prasidh for a huge six. Live Score: England (220/3) trail India by 251 runs. Ollie Pope (101*), Harry Brook (10*) It is not sunny today. The Indian players are wearing their sweaters. It is a little cloudy in patches and the ball is doing its bit. Alright then. We are ready for the first ball of the day. Prasidh Krishna has the ball, and Ollie Pope takes the strike for the English side. The India and England players observe a minute's silence in the memory of David 'Syd' Lawrence, who passed away today after motor neurone disease diagnosis. It was revealed almost exactly a year ago that Lawrence, who took 18 wickets in five Tests for England between 1988 and 1992, was the latest sportsperson to be diagnosed with motor neurone disease, an incurable illness which progressively damages parts of the nervous system. A statement from Lawrence's family said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with motor neurone disease. "'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family, who were with him when he passed. "A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different. His willingness to encourage and think of others right up to the end was typical of the man he was." Rishabh on reaching 100 with a six When Bashir was bowling the previous over, I thought I should get to the hundred in that very over. I didn't want to play percentage cricket and take a risk, he bowled well, so I respected it and took a single. In the next over when he came, i told him 'if you keep the field close-in, I will hit the big shot'. Luckily, I was batting on 99. I was confident. But, I wanted to play to the merit of the ball. Rishabh on his celebration I had three celebrations in mind. One of them was 'let bat do the talking'. Then I thought, I will mine only. I have been doing it from my childhood (somersault). I trained in gymnastics in school. In school, I was doing gymnastics. I am very used to it. Even if you wake up me up in the middle of the night, I can do this somersault. After the accident, I had to work harder for this. I worked on it. It's now easy for me to do it. Rishabh on finding form in Test cricket In my mind, I wanted to cut down on a few shots (preparation for Tests after IPL). I wanted to play in the V. If you have seen it, I haven't played a lot of shots to balls that are bowled wide. I want to play straight. Rishabh on winning back Gavaskar It feels so good. I have worked on my weaknesses, tried to recover from setbacks. I wanted to change a few things in my comeback. I worked hard and focused to change some this. More importantly, I have worked on being disciplined. It gives me a lot of satisfaction. 'We've seen four hundreds in the match so far — three from India and one from England — but which bowler has been truly special? For me, it's just Bumrah. Yet, just the ability to manufacture a wicket every time he came into the attack is what stands out. The one bowler that comes to mind, someone with that kind of impact single-handedly, is Sir Richard Hadlee. He played for a New Zealand team with a relatively weaker attack, but every time he came on, you felt a wicket was around the corner. The common thread between the two is mastery — when I watched Hadlee from close quarters, he felt like a true master of his trade. I get that same impression with Bumrah.' Sanjay Manjrekar showers praise on Jasprit Bumrah aherad of Day 3. "Just look at this guy — the kind of wicket he picked on a pitch like this. We saw during the 2023 Cricket World Cup how he put himself in a different league from the rest of the fast bowlers, and here he is doing it again. The dismissal came with such nonchalance, and that's something only Bumrah can manufacture. Ben Stokes does it for England to some degree, but this guy does it consistently. In that final over, with Harry Brook trying to survive, what happened was pure drama. We witnessed the genius of Bumrah when he got him to pull a short ball he hadn't used at all throughout the innings. The setup was brilliant — delivery after delivery outside the off stump — and then came that surprise bouncer. Nowhere in the corner of his mind would Harry Brook have expected it. It came, and he instinctively played the shot.' Rishabh Pant is speaking to Cheteshwar Pujara before the start of day's play. Pant says that he told Shoaib Bashir that he will hit him for a six if the field was pulled up at 99. Pant speaks about his celebration, says that he had three of them planned. "I had planned three, one was a sleeping celebration, one I thought I will celebrate with ''let the bat do the talking.' Then I thought I will stick to my regular one." Pant says that he has gone gymnastics from a very little age. Says that after the accident, it took time to get the flexibility back, but he can do the somersault right after waking up from the bed. Pant also talks about his revival of form in Test cricket. He says that he has lessened the number of his shots. That he is trying to play his percentages more than going for all out attack. Day 1 was hot and dry, Day 2 had patches of rain. What is Day 3 going to be like? As per accuweather, the day is mostly going to be clear. Rain is once again expected late in the day, between 3-5 PM local time. There were conversations around Ollie Pope's place in this Test match. England were pondering a switch with Jacob Bethell. Pope celebrated his century in style yesterday, after he was able to drag England out of trouble. Reuters Photo Pope's challenge now certainly will be to follow this innings up in consistent manner. Back in England's tour of India in 2024, Pope started off the series with a 196-run innings, and then absolutely faded away. Gautam Gambhir's motivation is going to be key today as India come out on Day 3 of the Headingley Test match. A good speech from Gambhir will fire up the Indian side and motivate them to do better than yesterday. India have not done very well with the ball. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, who has bowled impeccable lines and lengths, the rest of the India bowlers have been all over the place. Shardul Thakur in particular was so bad yesterday that Shubman Gill was forced to take him off the attack after just 3 overs So first things first, England currently trail by 262 runs with 7 wickets still in hand. Ben Duckett last night said that England would gladly take this position as they thought India were going to score close to 600 runs. England have Ollie Pope and Harry Brook at the crease and have Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith to bat after this. India were batting incredibly well in the morning session of Day 2. They were 430/3 when Shubman Gill holed out the deep square leg fielder. After Shubman's wicket, India faced an epic collapse and were bundled out for 471 runs. This collapse may come back to haunt India later in the game. England have clawed their way back into the match after being dominated for one and a half days straight. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope batted extremely well to keep the England fast bowlers at bay. England were helped by some ordinary fielding on India's part, where they dropped three crucial catches. This allowed the batters to score freely and with confidence, as they crossed the 200-run mark inside the first 50 overs of their innings.
