Carl Spackler adds truly international flavour to Queen Anne cracker
Three times a Grade One winner for Chad Brown in the States, the Lope De Vega five-year-old is now owned by Yulong Investments and with a new trainer in Ciaron Maher, meaning he will be a first Australian runner in a race superstar American mare Tepin won in 2016.
Connections feel they have the right type of horse to be competitive, with William Bourne, Maher's bloodstock manager, saying: 'The sample size (of international runners in the Queen Anne) isn't huge, but his times really stacked up and just his temperament and attitude, he's the perfect horse to travel – he's an absolute dude and I think he's going to run a big race.
Yulong Investments have confirmed the purchase of Carl Spackler, who will target the G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal @Ascot!

'He's a very straightforward horse, there's not much to know – what you see is what you get. He's got a great temperament, he's like a kid's pony, he's made it so easy to bring him here, get him into the rhythm and train him. He's definitely made life easy for the boss.
'It's a red-hot race, there's no hiding, you're at Royal Ascot in a Group One so you're under no impression you're going to get an easy field. It is what it is, we think he's a pretty good horse and hopefully he can show up on Tuesday.
'When you speak to English owners and trainers at the Melbourne Cup, the buzz is the whole week and this is very similar – great weather, a lot of people, a lot of hype. It's a very international raceday and world class so just to even be here as a spectator or have a horse here, it's a privilege and to have Yulong entrust us with the horse is just amazing.'
Lead Artist, Dancing Gemini, Rosallion and Notable Speech set a high standard for Carl Spackler to aim at, having filled the first four places in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, as does Sardinian Warrior.
John Gosden is responsible for both Lead Artist and Sardinian Warrior, who is coming off a career-best in the Prix d'Ispahan.
Of Lead Artist, Gosden said: 'I think the stiff mile at Ascot will suit him well rather than a slick mile and it's a wonderful race.
'You have the first four in the Lockinge all turning up and will they finish in the same order, that will be the question.
'He got stuck in the ground at Sandown and he doesn't like that. He likes what we got at Newbury in the Lockinge and what we're hopefully going to get at Ascot on Tuesday.
'He was in need of the race at Sandown and he came there travelling nicely, it was just on that ground he struggled to get home. He turned that round and it wasn't a huge surprise. Did I think he would win? Probably not, but I did think he would run a huge race.'
Of Sardinian Warrior, he added: 'He ran a nice race in France and it's always nice to have a good second-string.
'I think the other horse did outstay him but let's face it, Sosie is a really good horse. Andre Fabre saw the race was there for taking and supplemented him, but he's a mile-and-a-quarter-plus horse really and coming back to a mile could suit our horse.'
Notable Speech won last year's 2000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes and Charlie Appleby expects him to take a good step forward from his Lockinge reappearance.
He told the Godolphin website: 'Notable Speech comes into this in great order and we are looking forward to seeing him on the straight track at Ascot.
'The Lockinge was his first start of the year and he has definitely come forward for the run. Conditions are there to suit him and it looks a fantastic race to kick off the meeting.'

Steve Tandy remains leading contender for Wales job despite Townsend claim The WRU will announce the Warren Gatland's successor in the near future Steve Tandy (Image: INPHO/Dan Sheridan ) Steve Tandy is still in the mix to be the new Wales head coach despite Scotland boss Gregor Townsend insisting his right-hand man is going nowhere. Tandy has been a contender throughout the process and is admired within the upper echelons of the Welsh Rugby Union. The 45-year-old is currently defence coach of Scotland, where he has done an impressive job for the past six years. Townsend was categoric on Tandy's future last week, insisting he is "going nowhere" and branding the links as simply media speculation. Article continues below Tandy has plenty of experience having previously been head coach of the Ospreys while has has also been in charge of the defence at Australian Super Rugby outfit the Waratahs. After a few years at Scotland Tandy was included in Gatland's backroom team for the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 2021. But there are also other candidates for the role, with the likes of Easterby and Smith boasting strong track records. A coaching team of Matt Sherratt, Danny Wilson, Leigh Halfpenny, Adam Jones and T. Rhys Thomas will take Wales to Japan this summer on an interim basis. Royal Ascot Day 1 tips: Rosallion and Ruling Court to grab early headlines
Royal Ascot Day 1 Tips The 2025 Royal Ascot event takes place this week as the highlight of the British flat racing season begins on Tuesday, 17 June. Five days of top quality racing see eight Group 1 contests across Britain's most lucrative meeting of the year, with over £10m in prize money up for grabs across 35 races. And the first of these races will take place on Tuesday from 2.30pm, with the Queen Anne Stakes and the St James's Palace Stakes two of the three Group 1 contests and the highlights of day one on the Berkshire course. In the former, the quartet of Rosallion, Lead Artist, Dancing Gemini and Notable Speech reignite their battle from the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury last month , while the St James's Field of Gold looks to consolidate his rise to the top with a win against 2,000 Guineas rival Ruling Court. And it is indeed Rosallion and Field of Gold who are the respective early favourites with horse racing betting sites, with the former having been priced at 11/4 and the latter as low as 5/6 in the antepost betting. Queen Anne Stakes prediction The Queen Anne Stakes is the opening race of Royal Ascot, taking place at 2.30pm (live on ITV Racing). In the biggest race of Day 1, the quartet of Rosallion, Lead Artist, Dancing Gemini and Notable Speech will face off exactly a month after a dramatic Lockinge Stakes run at Newbury. It was Lead Artist who won on that day – with Dancing Gemini second and Rosallion third – but the order of favourites is different ahead of the opening race of Royal Ascot. Rosallion, who won the St James's Palace Stakes in 2024, enters this one as a 11/4 antepost favourite in what will be just his second run since that win almost a year ago, though his performance then means he sets off this week as the highest-rated horse. A 333-day absence means he has not run as much this year as some of his competitors, but a strong showing in the Lockinge suggests that there is further improvement to come, and his previous displays on different conditions – including wins in Curragh and Longchamp – illustrate why he's been the early favourite. And we're backing the four-year-old to make it back-to-back wins at Royal Ascot, with a wager on Rosallion to win the Queen Anne Stakes offered around 11/4 with various betting sites. Royal Ascot Day 1 prediction 1: Rosallion to win the Queen Anne Stakes - 11/4 William Hill St James's Palace Stakes prediction Another of the three Group 1 contests on the opening day sees a rematch of the 2000 Guineas as Ruling Court and Field of Gold face off again just over a month after the Newmarket Classic. It was Ruling Court who won on the day in May, but he is only priced as thew second favourite in this one at odds of 11/4, with Field of Gold as low as 5/6. While the latter came home well in the Guineas and looked to many to be the best horse – beaten only due to timing issues – he then went on to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas at Curragh on 24 May with a dominant performance, which has contributed to his status as favourite ahead of this one. As for Ruling Court, he eventually withdrawn from the running at the Epsom Derby on 7 June due to the conditions and so will enter this race the fresher of the two, though it is Field of Gold who has been the star of the flat-racing season so far. While many are backing the Juddmonte horse to complete his rise to the top with a win on Tuesday, prices around 5/6 don't offer a lot of value, so we think an each-way wager on Ruling Court provide the best value on Royal Ascot betting sites in this one.
