Jack Whitehall opens Brit Awards with Squid Games-style segment
Jack Whitehall opened the 2025 Brit Awards with a nod to Squid Games in a segment featuring the comedian in a version of the hit Netflix show. The infamous Squid Games guards, who wear bright pink boiler suits and a black mesh face mask with white symbols of various shapes, demanded that Whitehall "decide if you wish to host again" before presenting him with an X or O button.
"Is Taylor Swift going to be there? Because that would really sway me," Whitehall said as he pulled up his sleeve to reveal friendship bracelets made popular by Swifties. The comedian also poked fun at the Squid Games guards' outfits, comparing them to electronic music duo Daft Punk, who are well known for performing in metallic helmets.
Making reference to the large piggy bank featured in the popular South Korean TV show, Whitehall also took a jab at Ticketmaster's dynamic pricing for Oasis tickets. "That would probably just about cover those two Oasis tickets that I found on Ticketmaster," he said.

As Whitehall hovered over the buttons, Made In Chelsea star Sam Thompson interrupted the comedian, insisting he should let others host the awards ceremony, being aired on ITV and ITVX. "Come on mate, it's time to let someone else have a go," said Thompson.
Whitehall replies: "Wait, wasn't Joel Dommett here?", before presenter Ade Adepitan joked: "He was, but I shanked him in the night," making reference to the brutal scenes which appear in Squid Games. Presenter Dom Littlewood chimes in to tell Whitehall: "Stand aside, Whitehall. I should host next."
"I wouldn't do if I was you, mate," said model Sam Fox, before turning to look at founder of Fleetwood Mac Mick Fleetwood, in reference to their painful hosting gig at the 1989 Brit Awards. "That feels like quite a dated reference," said Whitehall, before Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley attempted to use slang suitable for Gen Z'ers or people born after 1996.
"Enough of this nonsense. It's time to hand over the reins to the GOAT (greatest of all time)," said Madeley. "Big Rich has got this. Let me flex with the Gen Zeds. Press the X, Jack. Let the rizzmaster cook."
After Whitehall agrees to host the Brit Awards, a dismayed Madeley's censored swearing is blurred out with an angry face emoji. "Let's do this," the comedian said, before the show live from the O2 Arena opened with a performance from US singer Sabrina Carpenter. The 2025 Brit Awards marked Whitehall's fifth time hosting the awards show.

Two of K-pop's BTS megastars released from military service
The world's most popular boy band are heading for a reunion: K-pop megastars RM and V from BTS were released Tuesday from 18 months of South Korean military service, prompting a fan frenzy. The seven members of BTS, South Korea's most lucrative musical act, have been on a self-described "hiatus" since 2022 while they separately undertake the mandatory service, required of all South Korean men under 30 due to tensions with the nuclear-armed North. Hundreds of fans gathered near two army bases just outside of the capital Seoul where band leader RM -- recently named "Favorite K-pop Artist" at the American Music Awards -- and singer V were released Tuesday. They are two of four BTS members who will be released this week. Two more, who enlisted first, were discharged last year, and the final member SUGA -- who has been working as a social service agent for alternative non-active-duty service -- will be released later this month. HYBE, the band's agency, urged fans not to go to the discharge location, citing safety concerns. "With the safety of both artists and fans in mind, we strongly urge fans not to go to the location in person," the agency wrote on Weverse, its superfan platform. Despite the warning, dozens of fans gathered outside V's military base, eagerly awaiting the return of their star. "Honestly, I came here with such high expectations," Yang Ho-hee, 28, told AFP outside the base. Fans had hung colourful banners to welcome the 29-year-old back to civilian life. "Taehyung, let's never be apart again," one said, referring to V's real name, Kim Tae-hyung. "I'll follow only you, Taehyung. We are each other's strength," said another. - Reunion tour? - Near the bases, on a football field where the newly released BTS members are set to speak later, hundreds of fans from around the world gathered hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols. "Actually, it's mixed emotions. I feel like I'm crying already," said Arlene Mendoza, a fan from the Philippines. "I've been traveling to Korea so many times, but this is actually the first time I'll see V." In addition to the army releases, Friday is so-called FESTA -- a celebration that marks the anniversary of the group's debut and typically draws thousands of global fans to Seoul. Mendoza told AFP she plans to attend fellow member J-hope's concert on Friday, plus join other BTS FESTA events. All the band members signed new contracts with HYBE in 2023, and once SUGA is released June 21, analysts expect reunion activities. "In the case of HYBE share prices, the current market consensus is seen as not fully reflecting BTS's impact," Lim Soo-jin, an analyst at Daishin Securities, told AFP. Despite an ongoing police investigation into the company chairman for suspected insider trading and a recent raid by authorities, analysts say HYBE's shares are expected to remain stable. "We see there's a high possibility of an upward revision in earnings forecasts, which could in turn drive the stock price higher," Lim said. HYBE's shares have seen a sharp increase, rising by 10 percent over the past week through June 9. - GDP impact - Prior to beginning their mandatory military service, the mega boy band generated more than 5.5 trillion won ($4 billion) in yearly economic impact, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute. That accounts for roughly 0.2 percent of South Korea's total GDP, according to official data. HYBE has hinted at a BTS comeback this year, but has also said the members "need time for reflection and preparation". "Normally, the process goes from song production to album release, then a tour," Lee Jae-sang, CEO of HYBE, told a shareholder meeting in March. "But since BTS have already become global top-tier artists, we are continuing discussions about their vision and what's next," Lee added. Outside HYBE headquarters in Seoul, banners from fans read: "Thank you for making even the waiting feel joyful." Love Island's first couples revealed after twist
Love Island has started with a twist, with the first couples decided in a dating app game and one contestant losing her partner after just a few hours. The ITV show has returned for its summer series, with 12 new singles moving into the villa as they try and find love. It got under way on Monday, 9 June and included the first coupling, but instead of the girls or boys picking based on appearances, host Maya Jama told the girls they would have to choose their first partners based on their dating profiles. 'This year things are slightly different," she said. "You've told me what your type on paper is, but does that match your ideal man in reality?' As the girls lined up by the pool, Jama explained: 'In front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts - shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?' The girls then had to decide who they wanted to couple up based on brief details like each man's name, age and a job, plus a little snippet such as: 'I like to play hard and work harder! I love to play so I work very hard." After reading them all, Jama told them to race to whichever heart they liked the look of, before the men were revealed. So who picked who? Meg and Dejon Meg has been single for over four years, sharing: "I don't date, I don't even know when my last kiss was." However, she didn't seem to be too sure when she first met Dejon, a personal trainer from London. Meg picked Dejon's heart but when she first saw him she admitted she was only "50/50" on whether he was her type. She later explained it was because Dejon had said he liked to party and she thought that sounded as if he wasn't looking to settle down. Dejon, who described himself as "definitely competitive", said that after they cleared that up he was feeling "positive" and was "excited" about what was to come. However, they later went off for a chat and Conor surprised Helena, who decided he was more fun to talk to than she'd thought he'd be. Sophie and Harry Commodities trader and semi pro footballer Harry said he was "delighted" when he saw Sophie, an author and motivational speaker, and loved that she was wearing red. Sophie - who made it clear she was "looking for a husband" - revealed she liked the look of Harry on paper and the pair got straight into a serious chat, with Sophie opening up about having once been injured in a fire and how she wanted a serious romance. Toni had travelled from the US, admitting she was "tired of American boys", and Jama told her she could pick any one of the boys to couple up with. She chose Ben, leaving Shakira single and in danger of being dumped from the island. But Jama threw her a lifeline, telling her she now has 24 hours to make a connection with one of the boys.
