Comedian Vir Das Urges Delhiites To Adopt Indie Amid Supreme Court's Order

Comedian Vir Das has joined voices in condemning the move, urging for compassionate alternatives like adoption, sterilisation and community support.
The Supreme Court's recent order directing the removal of stray dogs from the streets of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) has drawn strong reactions from citizens and celebrities alike. The court has given local authorities a deadline of eight weeks to relocate all stray dogs into dedicated shelters, firmly stating that none of the captured animals should be released back to the streets.
While some have welcomed the move on public safety grounds, others argue it is a deeply inhumane solution that goes against animal welfare principles.
Vir Das' Post
Among the public figures who voiced concern over the order is comedian and actor Vir Das. He shared a picture of his furry friends on social media and urged Delhiites to adopt an indie dog.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Vir Das wrote, 'If you are a resident of Delhi. Can I persuade you to adopt an indie off the streets, more than one? They are extremely healthy, low maintenance and will provide you with more love, affection and gratitude than you could ever imagine."
'I am also asking you to wholeheartedly and generously support your nearest animal welfare NGO. I plan on doing so, I hope you will too. As appeals are filed in court and processes take their time, our humanity needs to kick in immediately. Please do your part, big or small, it all adds up," he added.

A few hours back, he raised a legal query, asking, 'Legal minds. Given that the SC is the final word, are citizens not able to appeal this decision on dogs?"

Other Celebrities' Reactions
Well, Vir Das is not alone in speaking out. Celebrities like Varun Dhawan, Sanya Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor have also voiced their opposition to the Supreme Court order.
Taking to their Instagram Stories, the actors share a petition condemning the verdict. The note reads, 'They call it a menace. We call it a heartbeat. Today, the Supreme Court says — take every stray dog off the streets of Delhi-NCR and lock them away. No sunlight. No freedom. No familiar faces they greet every morning. But these aren't just stray dogs. They are the ones who wait outside your tea stall for a biscuit. They are the silent night guards for shopkeepers. They are the tails wagging when children return from school. They are the warmth in a cold, uncaring city."
The post argued for more humane alternatives, instead of what it called the 'erasure" of an entire community of animals. 'Yes, there are problems, bites and safety concerns, but caging an entire community of animals is not a solution; it's an erasure. The real fix? Large-scale sterilisation programs, regular vaccination drives, community feeding zones and adoption campaigns. Not punishment. Not imprisonment. A society that can't protect its voiceless is a society losing its soul. Today it's the dogs. Tomorrow… who will it be?" it added.
Shelters Ordered Across Delhi-NCR
According to the Supreme Court's directive, civic authorities in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad must set up shelters with the capacity to house at least 5,000 stray dogs each. These shelters are expected to have proper facilities for vaccination and sterilisation and the entire relocation project must be completed within six to eight weeks.
