BELAGA (July 17): The Digital Ministry remains committed to accelerating the national digitalisation agenda through grassroots initiatives such as the Jelajah Komuniti Digital programme, said Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.
Speaking during the programme at SMK Belaga on Wednesday, the Hulu Rajang MP said the outreach aims to boost digital awareness among rural communities, particularly students in remote areas.
'It not only introduces digital education but also empowers students with knowledge, career insights, awareness on online scams, and the relevance of emerging technologies in everyday life,' he said.
Ugak noted that the initiative reflects the ministry's broader mission to nurture a 'digital-first' mindset and foster a more inclusive, tech-ready society.
Held in collaboration with key agencies under the ministry, including the Department of Personal Data Protection, MYNIC Berhad, and official tech partner Alibaba Cloud, the programme features modules on digital literacy, data privacy, digital identity, and early exposure to artificial intelligence (AI).
'We are now in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driven by technologies such as AI.
'AI is no longer a futuristic concept, it is already embedded in our daily lives. In education, AI is used to analyse student performance and automatically recommend suitable learning content,' he said.
He cited examples of AI in education, where smart platforms now analyse student performance and generate tailored quizzes, notes, and exercises to support teachers.
Ugak also highlighted AI applications in healthcare where it helps doctors diagnose conditions using scan images such as MRIs and X-rays and in agriculture, where it aids in disease detection, weather monitoring, and optimal harvesting.
'Even in our daily lives, AI is present in digital assistants like Siri or Google Assistant, organising our photos and videos or offering personalised shopping suggestions,' he said.
He stressed that rural students must be equipped with digital skills from an early age, and assured that the ministry will continue expanding education-based initiatives to bridge the digital divide in Sarawak.
The event drew over 300 students, 40 community leaders, and representatives from various government agencies across the Belaga district.
Students also took part in a casual dialogue session with the Deputy Minister and participated in hands-on tech-based activities. AI belaga digital digital ministry Wilson Ugak

Digital Ministry drafting AI bill to combat deepfake videos

PETALING JAYA: The Digital Ministry is presently drafting an Artificial Intelligence (AI) bill to regulate the fast-evolving technology and combat deepfake videos as well as AI-related crimes, said Minister Gobind Singh Deo. 'The legislative draft is currently being refined through a comprehensive and inclusive engagement process involving various stakeholders. 'This approach is taken to ensure that the forthcoming legislation is holistic, balanced, and aligned with current technological developments as well as the nation's needs,' he said in a written parliamentary reply to Wong Chen (PH-Subang). Gobind added that the government has introduced the National AI Ethics and Governance Guidelines (AIGE), which outline seven core principles, including fairness, transparency, accountability and privacy protection, that must be observed by AI developers and users. Last month, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said Malaysia is studying to develop AI legislation to address legal complexities in the digital age. She further said that she has formally written a letter to Gobind, proposing a meeting between the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and the Digital Ministry to initiate a discussion on drafting new AI laws. According to Azalina, at present, Malaysia has no specific laws focused on AI because, unlike traditional technologies, AI operates on an entirely different platform.

Economists expect 13MP will set out to boost Malaysia's competitiveness

Sunway University economics professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng. KUALA LUMPUR: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is expected to enhance Malaysia's competitiveness by promoting high-value manufacturing through business and investor-friendly policies, say economists. Putra Business School associate professor Dr Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff said that the 13MP, which serves as the country's indicative development plan from 2026 to 2030, will help stimulate both domestic and foreign investments through policy reforms and incentives. 'The 13MP can position Malaysia as a leader by leveraging existing strengths in manufacturing and semiconductors, driving regional integration through Asean frameworks and adopting strategic regional positioning. 'It should also aim for the advancement of the semiconductor value chain and enhance regional supply chain resilience while not forgetting sustainability and inclusivity among local businesses,' Ahmed Razman said. The 13MP document is scheduled to be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat sitting on July 31 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The prime minister had previously said the 13MP was being formulated with a focus on the economic empowerment of the people through increased income, inclusive and sustainable economic structural reforms, as well as strengthening governance and efficiency in the delivery of public services. In addition, Ahmed Razman said the five-year strategic plan should also promote automation through incentives for technology adoption, support for workforce transitions, and clear and stable policies. 'The 13MP should accelerate digitalisation by investing in digital infrastructure, providing incentives for digital adoption, creating ecosystems and collaboration, as well as strengthening cybersecurity and data governance,' he added. Sunway University economics professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng said the 13MP should prioritise creating and enabling an environment for free markets to thrive and for private enterprises to innovate, compete, and prosper. Yeah noted that Malaysia is expected to transition into a high-income nation, as defined by the World Bank, during the 13MP period from 2026 to 2030. Yeah emphasised that one of the key drivers of this transition is the ongoing expansion of high-value and advanced manufacturing and service sectors. 'The recent increase in foreign direct investment in these areas has enhanced the country's competitiveness and its strategic position as a regional hub for the semiconductor supply chain and data centres. 'In addition to semiconductors and data centres, industries such as artificial intelligence and those related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) are also significant. 'The 13MP is expected to promote structural advancements in other high-growth and high-value industries, including renewable energy, carbon capture and storage, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals,' he said. Yeah added that the 13MP initiatives should also address the increasing demand for more sophisticated and higher-quality services, which will subsequently drive growth in finance, education, healthcare, and aged care. — Bernama
