The Hindu25-06-2025
A two-day coastal security exercise, 'Sagar Kavach', commenced in the coastal districts of central region in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday to assess the level of preparedness and alertness of stakeholders involved in coastal security.
The exercise, which concludes on Thursday, is being carried out in Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts. Surveillance was stepped up along the coastal areas as part of the exercise.
The Coast Guard, Indian Navy, district police, Coastal Security Group of the Tamil Nadu Police and other stakeholders are involved in the joint exercise that started in the early hours. One of the objectives of the drill is to review the preparedness of the stakeholders to thwart intrusion of terrorists through the sea route.
Police personnel deployed at check posts in the coastal areas in the five districts carried out intensive vehicle checks. The Coastal Security Group personnel carried out patrolling in the sea using their patrol boats checking the boats of fishermen in the sea and those anchored at the fishing harbours.
The coastal villages were brought under the scope of heightened surveillance with CSG personnel looking out for any suspicious movements and sensitising the fishermen. Vigil was also mounted at high value targets situated in the coastal areas.
Police sources said the exercise was mainly aimed at assessing the level of preparedness and alertness of the stakeholders involved in coastal security while dealing with maritime threats. As part of the exercise, a couple of Red Force teams comprising security personnel were sent as dummies in Nagapattinam district to act as aggressor force. The Red Force teams were 'secured' by the CSG personnel at Velankanni and Nagore.

Trichy: Around 14 fishermen from Nagapattinam district were assaulted and robbed allegedly by Sri Lankans when they were fishing in the sea east of Kodiyakarai on Friday night. Injured fishermen were admitted to Nagapattinam Medical College Hospital on Saturday. Sources said groups of fishermen from Vellapallam village ventured into the sea in their fibreglass reinforced plastic motorised boats on Friday. Around 7pm, a four-member crew was attacked by at least 14 attackers in four boats. Around 8.30pm, another four-member crew was attacked by more than 10 people. The assailants boarded the fishing boats and landed blows to the crew members. After subduing them, the assailants snatched equipment such as GPS, transceivers, batteries, mobile phones, and some fishing nets. The fishermen returned to Vellapallam on Saturday morning. They informed village representatives, officials from the fisheries department and the Coastal Security Group about the attacks. Two Sri Lankans held with 210kg ganja off TN coast

Trichy: Two Sri Lankan nationals were arrested for smuggling cannabis through the sea near Adirampattinam in Thanjavur district on Thursday. Local fishers rescued the duo after spotting them struggling in the water with floating parcels of contraband. Around 7am, fishermen from Keezhathottam village noticed two men clinging to bags and containers about four nautical miles from shore. Suspecting foul play, they brought the men and their floating parcels back to land and alerted authorities. The Coastal Security Group (CSG) team from Adirampattinam, led by DSP S Murugan and inspector A Manjula, detained the men for questioning. They were identified as Anthanan Amaladasan, 36, and Jeevanantham Varaprakasam, 51, both from Mannar in Sri Lanka's Northern Province. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly said they had arrived by motorised boat on Wednesday night to procure cannabis from Indian contacts. Their boat capsized on their return journey, and they had been adrift for several hours. Seven parcels recovered from the scene contained around 210kg of ganja. The duo was handed over to Adirampattinam police for further investigation. They have been booked under the Passport Act (for illegal entry), the Maritime Zones Act (for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line), and the NDPS Act (for smuggling narcotics). A police probe is underway.
