A recent conversation with a friend abroad reminded me of this sad reality when she extended an irresistible invitation to her bridal party in Thailand.
The excitement bubbled up as I heard her enthusiasm over the phone, but as soon as I hung up, reality set in.
I started browsing for flight prices, and my heart sank. R20 000 just for flights? Who has that kind of cash lying around? Can I really save enough in six months?
While I contemplated dipping into my stokvel savings, a little voice in my head urged caution.
Surely, I can't be the only one grappling with the high costs of travel.
If you're like most of us, you might feel tempted to decline the invite and stick to your staycation plans.
But what if I told you that your dream holiday is more attainable than you think?
With a sprinkle of creativity and a dash of discipline, you can turn those travel dreams into reality without breaking the bank.
To tackle this growing concern, I turned to Sonja Steyn, the strategic head of wealth management, financial planning and advice at Momentum.
She shared advice on how to convert your vacation dreams into reality, underscoring that you don't need to be wealthy or wait for a windfall.
Step 1: Name your holiday
The first step to saving for your dream getaway is to give it a name. Sounds silly? Think again!
Psychologists suggest that naming your goal activates what's called 'goal identity psychology.'
Instead of just saying, 'I want to go on holiday,' try something specific like 'Bali 2025' or 'Family Safari Fund'. By personalising your goal, you create an emotional connection that keeps you motivated.
Step 2: Create a holiday jar
Next, let's talk about the power of automation.
Open a separate savings account or even grab a jar from your kitchen. Set up a small automatic transfer each month, treating it like a future plane ticket payment. You'll be amazed at how quickly those small amounts add up.
This method removes the need for daily decision-making, allowing you to build a habit that works quietly in the background.
Step 3: Swop, don't sacrifice
Big savings don't have to come from big sacrifices. Instead, focus on smart swaps.
For instance, skip the two cappuccinos a week - that's about R300 a month. Over a year, that's R3 600 saved!
Imagine what you could do with that money: hotel nights, excursions or even flights. Small, consistent changes are far easier to sustain than extreme cuts, so embrace the aggregation of marginal gains.
Step 4: Review your subscriptions
Let's face it: we all fall into the subscription trap. How many streaming services do you actually use?

Sell unused items online, take on a small side hustle, or use loyalty points (like eBucks or Discovery Miles) to cover flights, hotels or meals.
This taps into 'found money psychology,' making it easier to direct unexpected income towards your savings without feeling like you're giving anything up.

After Gayton McKenzie's Sports, Arts and Culture department gave away 2 000 free tickets, the official attendance was still some 10 000 below capacity at the iconic Johannesburg venue. A quick check of the official Ticketmaster website on Monday still shows several thousand tickets are available, especially in the R3 500+ price range. Following the Springboks' woeful second half performance at Ellis Park, one wonders if fans in the Cape will be willing to fork out that much for a ticket. Rain is also forecast for the afternoon / evening and the Cape Town Stadium remains a nightmare in terms of traffic and parking at the best of times. When one considers a one-month subscription to DStv costs around R1 000, one is never surprised to learn there will be empty seats in the stands. Following Saturday's match, South Africans have only one more chance to see the Springboks live in Mzansi this year – against Argentina at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on 27 September. Will Gayton McKenzie's Sports, Arts and Culture department be giving away another 2 000 free tickets? Saturday's match follows a trend of lower-than-expected ticket sales for the Springboks' recent July Test matches – including fixtures against Italy in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth and Georgia in Nelspruit – none of which reportedly reached capacity. Despite this, SA Rugby remains optimistic, pointing to strong broadcast numbers and sustained interest in the national team, which remains a major commercial drawcard following their 2023 Rugby World Cup triumph. Join Philocaly beach and nature hike

Reconnect with nature, yourself and others on the Philocaly Trail – a scenic four-day nature walk designed to slow you down and fill you up. Philocaly – 'love of beauty' Philocalist – 'someone who loves beauty and appreciates it in all its forms' The Philocaly Trail was founded in 2019 by Nikki Williamson, who wanted to create an annual event that would generate donations towards conservation organisations and give participants the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of KZN's north coast. Over the years, the routes have sometimes varied, with some events taking place over five days, others just two. The inaugural walk began in Durban and ended in Mtunzini; all other years have started north and ended south. Last year saw the introduction of two circular routes; starting and ending at the same location. This made the logistics easier for many attendees, which is why it was decided that all routes for this year's event would be circular. The 2025 Philocaly Trail takes place from Thursday, 7 August to Sunday, 10 August. Day 1 – Mtunzini +/- 15km of coastal forest and beach Day 2 – Amatikulu +/- 16km of beach, grassland and forests Day 3 – Amatikulu +/- 16km of beach, grassland and forests Day 4 – +/- 15km of beach, coastal forest and farmland Participants can join for one, two or more days, and all levels of fitness are welcome.
