Andhra Pradesh to roll out free RTC bus ride for women from Aug 15
At a meeting with officials on Monday, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to issue 'zero fare tickets' to women passengers under the scheme set to be implemented from August 15.
The ticket must include details such as the route travelled, the amount of money saved through the free service, and the full 100% subsidy the government provides.
The Chief Minister stated that issuing 'zero fare tickets' would help women passengers clearly understand the benefit they are receiving.
He instructed officials to develop the necessary software for this purpose.
He discussed the financial aspects of the scheme in the other states where it has been implemented and what it might cost in Andhra Pradesh. He directed that the scheme must be implemented effectively from August 15 under all circumstances.
In view of the implementation of the scheme, the Chief Minister asked APSRTC to explore alternative revenue sources and reduce operational costs to become a profitable entity.
He directed officials to come up with an action plan on the possible revenue-generating methods and the necessary policy changes.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to purchase only AC electric buses in the future. He noted that converting existing buses to electric buses would reduce maintenance costs and recommended that the required electricity be produced in-house.
He also emphasised the need to study the establishment of charging stations in all RTC depots across the state.
Free bus travel for women was one of the 'Super Six' promises made by the Telugu Desam Party-led alliance in last year's elections.
There was no clarity whether the scheme would be applied within the district, as stated by the Chief Minister a few days ago.
Addressing a meeting in Srisailam two weeks ago, the Chief Minister had stated that women can travel free in the district in RTC buses from August 15.
The opposition parties have accused the coalition government of going back on the promises made in the elections. YSR Congress Party alleged that the government has betrayed women after promising free travel across the state.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday came down heavily on the Congress-led opposition for 'raising questions' about Operation Sindoor 'instead of paying tributes to the valour displayed by our armed forces'. Addressing a function organised by a media house here, the former BJP president also alleged that the Congress had been 'soft' on insurgency while in power, and tried to 'frame innocent people' by spinning the theory of 'saffron terror' because of 'vote bank' considerations. 'Recently, we had discussions in both Houses of Parliament on Operation Sindoor. Both debates lasted for 16 hours each. The opposition, which had started off on a belligerent note, was left dumbstruck,' Singh claimed. Singh said it is 'regrettable' that the opposition was raising questions on Operation Sindoor, 'which saw our valiant armed forced destroying so many terror hideouts'. The occasion warranted paying tributes to the country's armed forces, he said. 'This has been the tradition in the past. During the war of 1971, (when Indira Gandhi was the prime minister), our leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee had wholeheartedly supported the government of the day,' Singh said. He also acknowledged that 'political and social unity' had been on display in 1999, when Vajpayee was the PM, and Kargil happened, adding, 'such unity is essential to root out terror once and for all'. The defence minister also drew a contrast between the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, characterised by 'decisive action against terror', and the 'soft' stance of the past Congress governments, weighed down by concerns of 'vote bank' and 'politics of appeasement'. 'People still shudder to recall the pre-2014 era, when terror attacks had become the order of the day. A series of bomb explosions were seen in this very city,' said Singh, referring to the serial blasts that had rocked the Gandhi Maidan in 2013, when he was sharing the stage with Modi, then the chief minister of Gujarat and the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, during the latter's maiden rally in Bihar. 'Elsewhere, like we saw in the Malegaon blast case, innocent people were framed in the name of saffron terror. The judge who delivered the judgment made the remark that terror has no religion. This is exactly what we have been saying all along,' the senior BJP leader said. All the accused in the case, including former BJP MP Pragya Thakur, were recently acquitted. Singh, who had held the Home portfolio in the previous Narendra Modi cabinet, said, 'Vote bank politics weakens the nation's fight against terror. In the last 11 years, our resolve against the menace has grown stronger. The morale of our armed forces is skyrocketing. Anything that dampens this enthusiasm is neither in national interest nor in public interest.' Singh also touched upon the 'rapid economic progress' under Modi, asserting, 'We were the 11th largest economy of the world a decade ago. Today, we are occupying the fourth spot. No power can now stop us from reaching the top. The country is in safe hands, and so is Bihar, with the NDA in power. May this winning combination go from strength to strength.'

Election Commission has become PM Modi's 'puppet': Mallikarjun Kharge
Amid a row over the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday alleged that the Election Commission has become a "puppet" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha also accused PM Modi of seeking to divide society and said he chose to be on a "maun vrat" (vow of silence) on important issues during the auspicious month of Shravan. Addressing the inaugural event of the day-long conference on 'Constitutional Challenges - Perspectives and Pathways', he claimed the Constitution was in danger under PM Modi and the BJP rule, and asserted that it is the duty of every Congress leader and worker to protect it. "We all know that the Constitution of India is not just a legal document, but the soul of our democracy. It grants every Indian the right to justice, freedom, equality and fraternity. "But today, the Constitution is in danger. Leaders in power are talking about changing the Constitution. If the BJP had won 400 seats in the 2024 elections, they would have changed the Constitution. But this is the strength of the country's people, they gave a tight slap on the face of those who were saying '400 paar'," Kharge said. He said it is the achievement of the Congress, credit for which goes to Rahul Gandhi, who "did not abandon the Constitution and launched a campaign to save it". Claiming that 65 lakh voters were being disenfranchised in Bihar under the SIR, he said the EC "wants to take away" the voting rights of all the poor and marginalised and minorities, who would otherwise vote for the Congress as they were "fed up" with the BJP rule. Alleging that voters were "changed" in the Maharashtra Assembly elections and Lok Sabha elections, he said the Congress now has "proof" as Rahul Gandhi also explained how voters were changed in an assembly constituency in Karnataka. The Election Commission has dismissed allegations of irregularities as "unfounded". The BJP has alleged that the Congress is attacking constitutional bodies as it is unable to accept its successive defeats. At the conference, Kharge also alleged that discrimination against minorities and Dalits has become a common practice in BJP-ruled states. The Congress chief also accused Prime Minister Modi of trying to polarise society with his statements during the elections. "He always talks about chicken, Mughals, Mangal-sutra in elections and he always talks about dividing the society. The people of the country chose him and elected him to protect the Constitution, but he is working to crush it. "If anyone is crushing the Constitution, it is the prime minister and the BJP," he alleged. Taking on the PM, Kharge said Prime Minister Modi sits in his office after coming to Parliament and does not attend the House. "He watches the proceedings of Parliament on TV there. If you just want to watch the proceedings, come to the House and see it face-to-face. I don't understand what he is afraid of," Kharge said. Noting that a battle of ideologies is going on in the country, he said while the Congress is protecting the Constitution, the BJP is attacking it. "The soul of India is enshrined in the Constitution. It is the strength of every citizen, their right to move forward and live with dignity. We will protect the Constitution at all costs," he stressed. Claiming that the Opposition's voice was being stifled in Parliament, Kharge said former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was used by the government to do that in the Rajya Sabha. He claimed that Dhankhar would suspend opposition MPs and not allow them to speak, but when he started asserting that he was independent, he was "threatened and pressured". He claimed that when Dhankhar allowed a notice for the opposition's motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma, he was "threatened and pressured" by the government. The Congress president also claimed that people from the BJP said the words 'Socialist and Secular' should be removed from the Preamble of the Constitution, but the BJP has kept the words 'Socialist' and 'Secular' in the party constitution. "People from BJP-RSS cannot remove the words Socialist and Secular, because they do not have the power that the people of this country have," he said. Kharge said the responsibility of protecting democracy lies with the judiciary, the election commission and the media. But a judge used derogatory words for people of a particular religion and no action was taken against him and the government removed the Chief Justice of India from the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner, he said. "In such a situation, this is not democracy, but dictatorship," Kharge alleged.

Sule criticises Maharashtra government over rise in crime, alleges Rs 4,900 crore scam in Ladki Bahin scheme
MUMBAI: NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Mahayuti government for failing to address the rising crime rate in Maharashtra, accusing it of being a mute spectator as miscreants had no fear of the law. Speaking to reporters here, the Baramati MP claimed that a Rs 4,900 crore scam had taken place in the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yogana, the government's flagship scheme that provides a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 to women. She said parts of the state, including Pune and Beed districts, have witnessed a steady surge in crimes, while the government remains a mute spectator. "People have lost faith in the system. There is no fear of the law. Who is backing these criminals? Instead of looking into these questions, the government chooses to stay silent," she said. Sule criticised the delay in the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the 2022 murder of Parli-based businessman Mahadev Munde. "Only after Munde's wife, Dnyaneshwari, attempted self-immolation and met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, did the government act. We demand a fair and transparent probe by the SIT," she said. Sule also raised concerns about the recent communal unrest at Yavat in Daund tehsil, where groups of persons, angered by a social media post, vandalised and set ablaze properties.
