Ramalingam case: NIA chargesheet man for sheltering accused for six years
CHENNAI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday said they have filed a charge sheet against an accused for harbouring the proclaimed offenders in the 2018 Ramalingam murder case for six years.
The PMK worker was hacked to death on February 5, 2019, in Thanjavur district allegedly by members and office-bearers of the Popular Front of India, a banned outfit. The central agency said Mohammed Ali Jinnah of Batlagundu in Dindigul district has been charge-sheeted before the NIA Special Court, Chennai, for knowingly providing shelter to the absconding assailants and the conspirators in the case. The NIA, which took over the case in March 2019, had in August 2019 charge-sheeted 18 accused, six of whom were absconding and had been declared proclaimed offenders (POs).
During investigation, NIA found that Jinnah had harboured them all in a cottage, the agency said.
Jinnah was arrested in November 2024, while three of the absconding POs were arrested on different occasions between 2021 and January 2025, it said. A search is on for the remaining three absconders who are carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh each for information leading to their arrest, said a statement issued by NIA.

NIA chargesheets 3 in Punjab police post grenade attack, links case to Khalistan Zindabad Force
The NIA has charged three individuals linked to the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) for a 2024 grenade attack in Punjab. Investigations revealed a larger conspiracy involving KZF chief Ranjit Singh Neeta and UK-based operative Jagjit Singh Lahri, who recruited and funded the attackers. NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against three individuals in connection with the 2024 grenade attack on a police post in Punjab's SBS Nagar district, linking the act to a larger conspiracy orchestrated by the banned Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) terror outfit. The accused — Yugpreet Singh alias Yuvi Nihung, Jaskaran Singh alias Shah, and Harjot Singh alias Jot Hundal — have been charged under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Explosive Substances Act, and related provisions, the agency said in a statement on Sunday. The NIA has also initiated a separate probe against Ranjit Singh Neeta, the outfit's chief and a designated individual terrorist, along with UK-based KZF operative Jagjit Singh Lahri alias Jagga and other unidentified members of the network. The agency said Jagga had recruited Yugpreet through a UK-based contact, radicalised him via encrypted messaging apps, and transferred over ₹4.36 lakh in terror funds using a Canada-based network of entities. Yugpreet later recruited Jaskaran and Harjot, and the trio carried out the grenade attack on the night of December 1–2, 2024. In a parallel investigation, the NIA on June 12 raided 15 locations in Punjab and Haryana linked to Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) in connection with a separate grenade attack on a police post in Amritsar district in January 2025. The searches were conducted in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Pathankot, Kapurthala, and Rupnagar districts of Punjab, and in Sirsa district of Haryana. A range of incriminating materials, including mobile phones, digital devices and documents, were seized during the operation. The NIA took over the SBS Nagar case in April 2025 and re-registered it as RC-09/2025/NIA/DLI. Investigations are ongoing into both the KZF and BKI terror networks. Chhattisgarh HC orders Rs 2 lakh compensation for custodial death in Korba, blames state for negligence
Chhattisgarh HC RAIPUR: The Chhattisgarh High Court has directed the State to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the mother of a 27-year-old man, Suresh Haththel, who died in police custody in Korba. The court observed that the death was caused by negligence on the part of state employees. The court stated that the State is responsible for the tortious acts of its employees and that compensation in such cases serves as "exemplary damages" against the wrongdoer for breach of public duty. A division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Bibhu Datta Guru passed the order, on a writ petition filed by Prema Haththel, the deceased's mother. The petitioner had sought an independent investigation, including by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), into the custodial death of her son, a copy of the post-mortem report and CCTV footage, and monetary compensation. The petitioner's counsel, Anshul Tiwari, argued that the State's claim of injuries sustained from a "fall on the railway line" was implausible and unsupported by evidence. State of Orissa, the High Court emphasised that monetary compensation should be awarded for established infringement of fundamental rights under Article 21 (right to life) of the Constitution. The bench directed the Secretary, Home and Police Affairs, Government of Chhattisgarh, or the Director General of Police, Chhattisgarh, to ensure payment of the Rs 2 lakh compensation to Prema Haththel within eight weeks from the date of the order.
