Denzel Washington, Spike Lee and A$AP Rocky (and Rihanna!) Stun Cannes as ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Earns 5.5-Minute Ovation

Denzel Washington, Spike Lee and A$AP Rocky brought New York City to Cannes for the world premiere of their neo-noir crime thriller 'Highest 2 Lowest,' which earned a five and a half-minute standing ovation. Rihanna also drew plenty of attention as she sat with A$AP Rocky during the screening.
Lee, who always dons a talked-about red carpet look, wore an orange and blue-striped suit and jacket and matching hat to the premiere as an homage to his beloved New York Knicks. Washington, in a more traditional suit, jacket and tie, spent extra time on the Croisette, slapping hands with fans like a professional athlete on game day.

Before the premiere, Lee presented Washington with an honorary Palme d'Or, calling the actor 'my brother from another mother.'
Plenty of stars who do not appear in the film were on hand. Jason Momoa walked the carpet with his girlfriend, 'Splitsville's' Andria Arjona. The 'Aquaman' star held up Arjona's dress to make sure she didn't trip on the Palais steps. Ed Norton, who starred in Lee's '25th Hour,' was also there to support his former director, as was fellow filmmaker Wes Anderson (he premiered his latest film, 'The Phoenician Scheme,' at Cannes the night before). A$AP Rocky cut a shiny look, with big gold hoop earrings, gold teeth and blinged-out custom Ray Bans.
'Highest 2 Lowest,' an English-language remake of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film 'High and Low,' is set in modern day New York and stars Washington as a music mogul tied up in a life-or-death ransom plot. Rocky plays Yung Felon, an aspiring rapper who will stop at nothing to achieve his dream. Alongside Washington and Rocky, 'Highest 2 Lowest' stars Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice (in her film debut), Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, LaChanze, Aubrey Joseph, Michael Potts and Wendell Pierce. The screenplay was penned by William Alan Fox. After premiering at Cannes, 'Highest 2 Lowest' will get a theatrical release starting Aug. 22 via A24 and will stream on Apple TV+ Sept. 5.
Lee has a long history with Cannes, first competing for the Palme d'Or in 1989 with his now classic comedy-drama 'Do the Right Thing.' Other Lee joints to premiere at the festival include 1991's 'Jungle Fever,' 'Summer of Sam' in 1999 and 'BlacKkKlansman,' which won the festival's Grand Prix in 2018. In 2021, Lee served as the president of the competition jury, which that year awarded Julia Ducournau's 'Titane' with the Palme d'Or.
'Highest 2 Lowest' marks two-time Oscar winner Washington's first time at Cannes Film Festival and the second for Rocky, who was in the cast of the coming-of-age film 'Dope' which closed the Director's Fortnight section in 2015.

Apple TV+ hikes subscription for third time in three years

Apple is taking a cue from some of its competitors. The technology giant's Apple TV+ monthly subscription is now $12.99, starting Thursday in the U.S. and other countries. Apple said the new price will hit current subscribers 30 days after their next renewal date. The annual subscription price will not change. For new subscribers, the $12.99 monthly price begins after a 7-day trial period. The change marks Apple's first price hike for its streaming service since 2023. At the time, Apple lifted its monthly price to about $9.99 from $6.99. The company raised the price in 2022 from $4.99. Apple TV+ is one of the company's most popular services, but Apple does not release viewership numbers. A report from The Information earlier this year said the streaming service is losing more than $1 billion annually as subscriptions rocketed to 45 million, citing people familiar with the matter. Apple isn't the only streaming company hiking prices this year to either fund new content or reap returns on their investments. Earlier this year, both Netflix and NBCUniversal's Peacock boosted prices. Music streaming platform Spotify also raised prices in multiple markets. Earlier this year, Apple introduced its streaming service to Android phones in a move that could open the company to more people worldwide. The company is fresh off the release of its highest-grossing theatrical film, "F1: The Movie."

Sugar Season 2: Release date speculation, cast and plot details – Everything we know so far

By Aman Shukla Published on August 21, 2025, 19:30 IST Last updated August 21, 2025, 12:04 IST Apple TV+'s Sugar blew everyone away with its slick detective vibes and that wild sci-fi twist in Season 1. Now, fans are practically losing it waiting for Season 2 of this neo-noir gem. From when it might drop to who's back and what's next for John Sugar, here's the full scoop on everything known so far. When's Sugar Season 2 Hitting Screens? No official date has been spilled yet, but the tea points to a 2025 premiere. Apple TV+ gave the green light for Season 2 back in October 2024, and cameras started rolling in LA by February 2025, with some globe-trotting scenes shot overseas. Word on the street is production wrapped in August 2025, so they're probably deep in editing and all that post-production magic right now. Based on how Apple TV+ rolls with shows like this, a mid-2025 vibe—think June to September—feels like a safe bet. Season 1 dropped in April 2024, so a similar timeline makes sense. Keep your eyes peeled on Apple TV+'s socials for a trailer or some sneaky teasers to lock in that date. Who's in the Cast? Returning Stars and New Blood Colin Farrell is back as John Sugar, the private eye with a heart of gold and an alien secret that flipped the script. Dude's performance was straight-up electric, nailing that mix of tough and tender, so no surprise he's the anchor for Season 2. But what about the rest of the Season 1 crew? Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Ruby), Amy Ryan (Melanie), James Cromwell (Jonathan Siegel), Anna Gunn (Margit), Dennis Boutsikaris (Bernie Siegel), Nate Corddry (David Siegel), Sydney Chandler (Olivia Siegel), and Alex Hernandez (Kenny) haven't been confirmed yet. Ruby peaced out to another planet in the finale, so her comeback's a big question mark, but the alien plot could pull her back. Melanie's tight with Sugar, so fingers crossed she's in for the ride. Season 2's bringing some fresh faces to shake things up. Jin Ha ( Pachinko ) is playing a boxer mixed up with some shady folks, Laura Donnelly ( The Nevers ) is a woman who's not falling for Sugar's charm, and Tony Dalton ( Better Call Saul ) steps in as a sheriff's lieutenant. Plus, Shea Whigham ( Fargo ), Sasha Calle ( The Flash ), and Raymond Lee ( Quantum Leap ) are joining the party. Whigham's some government guy helping Sugar, Calle's a hustler on his team, and Lee's role is still hush-hush, which has fans buzzing with theories. This crew's gonna crank up the drama and keep the noir-sci-fi mashup popping. What's the Plot for Sugar Season 2? Season 2 throws John Sugar back into the LA grind, tackling a new missing persons case while chasing a personal lead—finding his missing sister. That Season 1 bombshell about Sugar being an alien watching humans? Yeah, it's about to get wilder. The finale left jaws on the floor with Henry (Jason Butler Harner) turning out to be a shady alien tied to a kidnapping, maybe even Sugar's sister. This season's got Sugar juggling a fresh mystery with his hunt for answers about his family and why he's stuck on Earth. Expect that gritty noir feel—think double-crosses, dark secrets, and moral gray zones—mixed with sci-fi craziness. With aliens now exposed, Sugar's on the run from hunters while facing off with Henry's dark side. Showrunner Sam Catlin ( Breaking Bad ) is leaning hard into Sugar's search for where he belongs, moving from just spying on humans to figuring out who he is. New characters like Ha's boxer and Donnelly's tough-as-nails role are gonna stir up trouble, and LA's shady streets will keep the vibe moody and intense. Oh, and word is they filmed a car chase in Downtown LA with Farrell doing his own stunts—bet that's gonna look insane. Ahmedabad Plane Crash Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication . Apple TV+ subscriptions just rose to $13 a month

Apple is once again raising the price of its streaming service. Apple TV+ is shooting up to $13 per month, from $10 per month. This is effective immediately. Current subscribers will see the price change 30 days after the next renewal date. There's one spot of good news here. The pricing for the yearly subscription remains unchanged, as does the cost of an Apple One bundle. Many platforms start cheap before slowly turning the heat up, using the drug dealer method of salesmanship. However, Apple really did a speed run here . The platform isn't very old and cost $7 per month as recently as 2023. Now it's nearly twice that amount. In a recent earnings call, the company said that overall Apple TV+ viewership rose "strong double digits year over year." The platform has been generating mainstream buzz. Severance has proven to be a gigantic hit and The Studio scooped up plenty of Emmy nominations this year. The platform's also a sci-fi powerhouse, releasing shows like For All Mankind , Invasion , Foundation , Murderbot , Silo and Dark Matter , among others.
