Langkawi International Ultra Run: Hong Kong's Wong is fastest woman and beats the men too

It was meant to be her husband's big day, but instead it was Wong Mei-yan who stole the show at the Langkawi International Ultra Run, becoming the fastest overall finisher in the 100km Round Island Ultra-Road.
The Hongkonger, better known for her marathon and trail-running exploits, clocked a blistering 10 hours, 29 minutes and 38 seconds, not only topping the women's field but also outrunning all male contenders.
What made Wong's triumph all the more remarkable was the fact it was her first road ultra and she was in Langkawi only because her husband, Wong Wai-chung, wanted to attempt the 100km distance.

'He was the one who found this race online and said we should try it together,' Wong said. 'But guess what, he gave up at 35km. He DNF'd. I finished, he quit.'
Despite her endurance background, the 32-year-old had zero expectations of winning the event last weekend.
'I usually run marathons or trail ultras, which are slower because of the elevation,' she said. 'I just told myself to keep moving, except for some of the slopes, and I'm really surprised I finished first overall.'
Running through the night posed its own challenge. Wong ditched her headlamp because of discomfort and instead carried her light by hand.

Injured Siobhan Haughey pulls out of World Aquatics Championships in Singapore

Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey has pulled out of this month's World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with a back injury, the four-time Olympic medallist said on Monday. Haughey was expected to compete for her sixth world title at the Singapore Sports Hub when the swimming leg kicks off on Sunday. The 27-year-old has only competed in one international tournament since taking a four-month break at the beginning of the year and said she had 'to do what is best for me'. 'I have pulled out of the World Championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury,' Haughey wrote on her Instagram story. 'I'm sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what's best for me. 'As elite athletes, we're trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently. Luckily, I have an incredible team supporting me. 'I can't wait to be back racing on the world stage again. But in the meantime, I will be cheering for the Hong Kong team and my friends from afar. Hope to see you all at the pool soon again.'

How this sports club empowers Hong Kong's ethnic minorities

A social club in Hong Kong wants to help people who come from ethnic minority backgrounds get involved in sports and become coaches. Inherited Sports supports ethnic minority communities by providing programmes that are sensitive to their cultural and religious needs. For example, the group runs a swimming class for Muslim women and children. They use Kowloon Park Swimming Pool when it is closed to the public and only have women coaches and lifeguards on duty. The initiative also trains young people to become coaches and sports leaders. According to the city's 2021 census, more than half of the South Asian community in Hong Kong work in just four areas. Not being fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin is often a barrier. But people from ethnic minority communities also face other challenges, such as racial discrimination, fewer resources and harmful stereotypes. Inherited Sports offers them training and workshops in a range of sports. It also provides a subsidy and career advice. The group has already helped 11 men and two women become certified coaches.

The show must go on: Ub Huishan blow 3x3 opposition away indoors as Wipha howls outside

Even the No 10 hurricane signal brought by Typhoon Wipha could not stop the action at Fiba 3x3 World Tour Hong Kong on Sunday, and almost as inevitable as the storm's approach was Ub Huishan's convincing 21-14 victory over Hangzhou. The world No 1 team from Serbia have now won three straight masters tours, after also winning in Marseille and Vienna, in May and June, respectively. On Saturday, the organisers told the Post the final day of the event at the Convention and Exhibition Centre would continue as scheduled given the 'minimum' impact any extreme weather might have on the two-day event. And while the city's famous book fair and sports expo were halted, player safety was not deemed an issue after this year's event was moved indoors, from Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. The decision was helped by the fact that visiting teams and staff were all staying at a hotel connected to the convention centre. When asked by the Post about the decision to proceed with matches behind closed doors, a Fiba spokesman said 'the safety and well-being of all athletes, staff, and personnel remain our top priority.'
