Strong winds, which can turn even a spark into a major fire, are expected to persist locally in the coming days.On Tuesday, houses on the Ionian island of Zakynthos were under threat from a major fire, according to the newspaper Kathimerini.Fires are also burning in the region of Phocis, north of the Peloponnese peninsula, and on the island of Kefalonia, although no residential areas are in danger there.Prolonged drought and, in some cases, strong winds are providing ideal conditions for the flames and are also complicating firefighting efforts.
The ministry is urging citizens to exercise caution and avoid igniting any embers.

11 Aug 2025 12:46 Istanbul (dpa) More than 200 aftershocks hit western Turkiye on Monday, hours after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the region. The disaster control agency said it registered 237 aftershocks, 10 of which had a magnitude of at least 4.0. Many residents spent the night outdoors or in their cars due to fears of further quakes, Turkish media reported. The epicentres were located in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province, where at least one person was killed and 29 others injured in Sunday's main earthquake. The quake struck at a depth of 11 kilometres, with tremors felt as far away as Istanbul and Izmir, more than 200 kilometres away. According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, a total of 16 houses collapsed in the quake. The rescue work has now been completed, with four people still being treated in lies on multiple fault lines, making it highly prone to earthquakes.
