Visit Qatar launches the second edition of Throwback Food Festival
The second edition of Visit Qatar's Throwback Food Festival, organised by Visit Qatar, returns at Doha's Old Port. This year it features new additions and exciting experiences
The festival celebrates the country's local heritage through traditional cuisine and cultural experiences, offering visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the past.
Hamad Al Khaja, Manager of Festivals & Events Delivery at Visit Qatar, said: 'Throwback Food Festival is a unique experience that celebrates Qatar's rich heritage through a variety of events that include traditional cuisine, cultural performances, and interactive competitions. This year, we have expanded the range of activities and enriched the experience, combining heritage markets, traditional games, folk tales, and artistic performances that reflect Qatar's cultural identity. Through this event, we aim to provide an integrated experience that blends the authenticity of the past with the modernity of the present, making Throwback Food Festival one of the most prominent Ramadan events that enriches the tourism scene in Qatar.'
A Ramadan experience with local touches
Throwback Food Festival brings the old Qatari souks to life through the 'Dakkan' initative, which recreates the flavours of old Qatar, where visitors can sample traditional foods and sweets from the Tayyibin generation. The experience allows visitors to relive their childhood through the dishes they grew up with, in an atmosphere that is full of the flavours of the past.
The Folk Games Kiosk also hosts fun competitions that reflect the spirit of Qatari traditions, where visitors can participate in traditional games in a lively Ramadan atmosphere.
Quizzes and Tales from the Past
The Throwback Food Festival Theatre offers a range of artistic and cultural activities inspired by Qatar's heritage. Visitors can enjoy interactive competitions such as 'Kahoot', which includes questions on popular foods, traditional crafts, and heritage events, with valuable prizes for the winners, as well as 'Treasure Hunt' competition, which invites participants to solve heritage puzzles and interact with different stalls to discover the secrets of the past.
Set in a lively atmosphere that embraces heritage, the Hakawati tells stories about the history of local cuisine and hospitality, with sound effects and traditional costumes reflecting the spirit of the past.
At the Puppet Theatre, children and families can enjoy a puppet show that tells stories about Qatari cuisine and the importance of hospitality and traditions, in an interactive and entertaining way.
The festival offers an interactive experience for culinary enthusiasts, with chefs competing in the 'Local Flavour Challenge' to prepare Qatari dishes with a creative twist, and the public participating in the 'People's Taste Challenge' to choose the best dish. There will also be a 'Secret Ingredient Challenge' where chefs will have to prepare dishes using surprising ingredients, making the competition even more exciting.
Folkloric performances and folk songs
The festival will host live musical performances featuring traditional songs and rhymes sung at majlis and weddings, and during food preparation such as grinding wheat and making bread, using drums, oud and marwas to add authenticity to the visitor's experience.
This year's Garangao will also be a night full of colour, joy, and memories.
To further enhance the Ramadan experience in Qatar, Visit Qatar has launched this year's Ramadan campaign titled "Welcome Our Dear Neighbours" which aims to welcome visitors from the GCC during the holy month of Ramadan for an exceptional Ramadan experience, under the theme 'Ramadan is better with you', with Qatar Calendar's events.
Visitors can explore the Ramadan events calendar on the Visit Qatar website and app. For more details on activities and events that blend tradition with modernity, they can also follow @QatarCalendar on social media.

Qatar eyes greater role @ ITB China 2026 after strong showing in 2025: Visit Qatar
Post Views: 70 Jassim AlMahmoud – PR & Communications Director – Visit Qatar in a special interview with TravTalk ME shared that their presence at ITB China 2025 was most successful and their intention to expand their presence next year with the positive feedback received as they participated for the first time. 'ITB China is a very important event for us for two key reasons: first, the exceptional quality and professionalism associated with the ITB brand; and second, the high caliber of exhibitors and potential partners participating in the show. We are here to build meaningful partnerships, but most importantly, to deepen our engagement with the Chinese market—which we consider a Tier 1 source market for Qatar. This is my first visit to China, and already it is clear that the country offers immense opportunities. China's vast population and its growing appetite for international tourism make it a key focus in our global tourism strategy. But to truly attract Chinese travellers, we must understand their preferences and expectations. We've already identified that gastronomy, shopping, cultural experiences, and family-friendly attractions are particularly appealing to Chinese tourists. Fortunately, Qatar can offer all of these. From luxury shopping and world-class cuisine to rich heritage and attractions suited for travelers of all ages, we are confident in our ability to cater to Chinese guests. We are seeing solid growth from this market. For example, in 2023 we welcomed 56,000 Chinese visitors, and in 2024 we've recorded a 28% increase—a clear sign of rising interest. To support this momentum, we are actively expanding our partnerships. We brought 10 partners from Doha with us to ITB China this year. And based on what we've experienced here, we're seriously considering expanding our presence next year. The market potential is undeniable, and the hospitality we've received reinforces the importance of being here. To better serve Chinese travellers, we've already taken practical steps: We have representative offices in Shanghai and Beijing. We currently have 35 Chinese-speaking tour guides, soon increasing to 45, including both full- and part-time staff. Many of our hotels now offer Chinese-speaking staff and Chinese cuisine. Visitors from China enjoy visa-free access to Qatar, which significantly eases travel. We are exploring training initiatives similar to those launched by other countries, such as tailored cultural and language programs for frontline tourism staff.' Speaking on connectivity he shared, 'On the connectivity front, Qatar Airways operates 61 flights per week to 8 major Chinese cities, in addition to services offered by three Chinese carriers—Xiamen Airlines, China Eastern, and Air China. We're in ongoing discussions to further increase this number, pending regulatory developments. The relationship between China and Qatar is strong at both the governmental and cultural levels. This mutual understanding is reflected in our visa policies and bilateral cooperation. Looking ahead, while language can still be a barrier, we are leveraging AI tools and professional translation services, and considering further steps to make our destinations more accessible—such as enhancing signage and information in Chinese. To conclude, China is a top-priority market for Qatar Tourism. ITB China has been a valuable platform, and based on our first-hand experience here, I am confident that our post-event report will strongly recommend an even larger presence next year. We are committed to building long-term relationships and delivering an outstanding experience for every Chinese traveller visiting Qatar.'

You can now pay for parking using your Salik account
Salik is offering ticketless parking to residents of Deira Enrichment Project… In the latest from a slew of road network and parking updates in the city, Salik has now introduced ticketless parking for residents and visitors of the Deira Enrichment Project. A new ticketless system implemented through Salik's partner firm Parkonic will allow some residents to enter and exit parking zones using their vehicle licence plates as digital tickets. No need for physical tickets or payment apps. Residents can have a yearly membership through Parkonic's app, costing Dhs5,000. Surprisingly, visitors can also have an annual membership, albeit a little pricier, for Dhs7,500, both of these prices excluding a five per cent value-added tax. Including VAT, an hourly parking costs Dh5 and Dh25 for overnight, including VAT across eleven districts. Parkonic, like Parkin, is one of the largest private parking operators in the UAE. Salik has collaborated with them to enhance parking and payment systems across the UAE by eliminating the need for apps and tickets and using Salik's e-wallet system. According to a report by Khaleej Times, the partnership is based on a five-year contract, during which the collaboration will result in the integration of Salik's e-Wallet into 107-plus locations under it's operation and any future locations it may operate in the UAE. Earlier this year, Salik introduced variable toll pricing. The new dynamic pricing applies for all days of the year, except Ramadan, which will have separate rates, and was implemented starting January 31, allowing motorists to travel toll free in certain passages of time in the day. Adjustments have been made according to peak and non-peak weekdays, the toll sits at Dhs6 during morning peak hours (6am to 10am) and evening peak hours (4pm to 8pm). During off-peak hours, between 10am and 4pm, and from 8pm to 1am, the toll is Dhs4. On Sundays, excluding public holidays, special occasions, or major events, the toll is Dhs4 throughout the day and free from 1am to 6am. @ Images: Getty > Sign up for FREE to get exclusive updates that you are interested in
