Bat Meat In Your 'Chicken' Biryani? Shocking Food Scam Busted In Tamil Nadu, 2 Held

News182 days ago
Two men in Tamil Nadu were caught hunting fruit bats and selling the meat as chicken. The illegal trade was busted by forest officials during a raid in Salem district
In a disturbing case that has raised serious concerns over food safety and wildlife protection, two men were arrested for hunting fruit bats and selling their meat disguised as chicken at roadside eateries in Tamil Nadu's Salem district.
The incident came to light after the Forest Department raided the Thoppur Ramasamy forest area on the night of July 25, acting on local reports of gunshots in the region. During the raid, forest officials caught the suspects red-handed while they were preparing bat meat by boiling it at the site.
Upon interrogation, the accused confessed to selling the meat as chilli chicken and other popular dishes at fast-food stalls in the Danishpettai area of Omalur. Officials confirmed that unsuspecting customers were consuming the bat meat believing it to be chicken.
Experts have flagged this practice as a major public health risk. Fruit bats are known carriers of life-threatening viruses, including Nipah, Ebola, Marburg, and Rabies. Consuming undercooked or contaminated bat meat can lead to severe disease outbreaks. A similar case in Congo earlier this year reportedly led to the deaths of over 50 people after the consumption of infected bat meat.
This is not the first such incident in India. In recent years, authorities have uncovered multiple cases of wildlife meat being passed off as chicken. In 2020, crow meat was sold in Rameswaram; in 2021, Bengaluru reported cases involving rat and dog meat; and just last year, similar suspicions at the Bengaluru railway station sparked public outrage.
The two accused, identified as Kamal (36) and Selvam (35), were arrested under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. They were remanded to judicial custody on July 28. Ranger Vimal Kumar, who led the operation, confirmed that a broader investigation is underway to trace the extent of the illegal activity and determine if others were involved.
The case has renewed calls for stricter surveillance and regulation of street food vendors to safeguard public health and prevent wildlife exploitation.

'Previous Govt Set Hindu Terrorism Narrative': Fadnavis Says Malegaon Verdict 'Exposed Conspiracy'

Last Updated: Devendra Fadnavis accused the UPA government of fabricating the 'saffron terror' narrative for vote-bank politics after the Malegaon blast acquittals. A day after all seven accused in the Malegaon blast case were acquitted, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis accused the Congress-led UPA government of trying to set the 'saffron terrorism' narrative and alleged that officers from that time tried to frame Hindu religious leaders and organisations. 'The conspiracy of 2008 has been exposed before everyone. The government at that time, for the sake of vote-bank politics, coined terms like 'Hindu terror' and 'saffron terrorism'," Fadanavis said. 'At that time, large-scale terrorist incidents were happening across the world, and 'Islamic terrorism' was a topic of discussion worldwide. To avoid angering their vote bank and to make it seem like they were maintaining balance, they created the notion of 'Hindu terrorism' and arrested people," he said. 'But, despite much effort, no solid evidence was found. Layer by layer, this conspiracy is coming to light," the Maharashtra Chief Minister said. On Thursday too, Fadnavis had claimed that police acted under the UPA government's pressure while probing the 2008 Malegaon blast, and Congress should apologise to the Hindus for the 'fake narrative of saffron terror." Fadnavis claimed that the probe was a conspiracy to defame the Hindus. The future course of action will be decided after studying the judgment, he had said, speaking to reporters in Mumbai. 'Congress should apologise to the acquitted accused and Hindu society," he demanded. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ED raids against Bengaluru group in homebuyers fraud case

Bengaluru, Aug 1 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches against a Bengaluru-based real estate company and its promoters who are accused of duping home buyers worth crores of rupees in the name of selling them flats in their residential project, official sources said. At least ten premises of Ozone Urbana Developers Pvt. Ltd. and its key management personnel were raided in Bangalore and Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. The main promoter of the group is Satyamoorthi Vasudevan. The company and its promoters were booked by the ED after taking cognisance of multiple police FIRs registered against them related to a residential project named Ozone Urbana in Devanahalli Taluk of Bengaluru. The integrated township project was to be handed over to buyers in 2018. However, till 2024, only 49 per cent of the project was completed, the sources said. The company 'failed" to hand over the project and has neither returned the money to the buyers, they claimed. It is alleged that the accused company and its key management personnel 'cheated" gullible home buyers by promising to pay their bank EMIs (taken for purchase of homes) until completion of the project. The company also promised many buyers 'huge" discounts, if they pay full amount in advance against the bookings and it also allegedly lured them with a 'buyback scheme". It is alleged that the directors of the said company cheated its buyers collectively to the tune of hundreds of crores and misappropriated the funds, the ED sources said.
