‘Thought we won't be poor anymore': Noida man's account credited with Rs 1 billion 13 lakh crore due to app glitch, then frozen

It was just another Sunday. Dileep Singh (20), a Class 12 dropout from Noida, decided it was time for a change. He had been using his old phone for some time, and was finally switching to a new one. He carefully transferred his SIM card into the new device, ready to set it up. But things didn't go as smoothly as expected. Once the device was on, his mobile data wasn't working. He quickly recharged his phone, reinstalled all his applications, and started logging into each of them. Then came the moment that changed everything. He opened a digital finance app. As the interface loaded and his account balance appeared, Dileep blinked in disbelief. The number on his screen didn't seem real. 'I couldn't believe it,' he said. 'It was an amount with 37 digits. The balance read: Rs 10,01,35,60,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,23,56,00,00,00,00,299. (1 billion, 13 lakh and 55 thousand crore)'. The astronomical sum meant he was richer than Forbes billionaires. 'For a few seconds, I thought, I was dreaming. Then, I informed my grandmother about it,' he said. Dileep lost his mother two months ago and his father 10 years ago. After losing his parents, he had been staying with her maternal grandmother, Maya Devi (65). 'I asked him to transfer some money from his account to someone and check. I was so happy. I thought we will not be poor anymore,' Maya Devi told The Indian Express. When he attempted to transfer the money, he could not. 'There was a message instead. Message mein tha ki koi technical issue hai bank se (The message said that there was a technical issue with the bank). After I tried transferring again, my account was frozen,' he said. Deepak said he was told by the bank that his account was frozen for a probe. According to the officers of Dankaur Police Station, a technical glitch in the digital finance app appears to have caused the app to erroneously display such an inflated account balance. 'This was likely due to a bug and only appeared within the app. Upon logging into his account through another application, Deepak's current balance showed to be zero. Further, an official bank statement was obtained via email, which also confirmed no account balance like before,' said the officer. When contacted, Station House Officer Munendra Singh confirmed that it was a bug that caused the confusion. 'We verified the claims. There is no amount in his account. We have not received any complaint from the consumer and therefore are not taking any legal action,' he said. Meanwhile, Deepak said that he had visited the bank and officials told him that his account will be recovered in two to three working days. Neetika Jha is a Correspondent with The Indian Express. Indian-origin taxi driver attacked in Dublin in apparent hate crime

An Indian-origin taxi driver based in Ireland for over 23 years has become the latest to be targeted in an unprovoked attack in the capital Dublin, with local police (Gardai) launching an investigation into the violent assault. A 'Stand Against Racism' protest was also held by the local community in condemnation of what was described as a 'vicious racist attack' and to express solidarity with migrants. Lakhvir Singh, in his 40s, told local media that he picked up two young men in their 20s on Friday night and dropped them at Poppintree, in the Ballymun suburb of Dublin. Upon arriving at the destination, the men are said to have opened the vehicle door and struck him twice on the head with a bottle. As the suspects fled, they reportedly shouted: 'Go back to your own country'. 'In 10 years I've never seen anything like this happen,' Singh said. 'I'm really scared now and I'm off the road at the moment. It will be very hard to go back. My children are really scared,' he said. A Dublin police spokesperson said Singh was taken to the city's Beaumont Hospital with injuries determined as not life-threatening. 'Gardaí are investigating the assault,' the spokesperson said. The incident followed an Indian Embassy advisory, also issued on Friday, expressing safety concerns following recent attacks in and around the capital Dublin and urging Indian citizens to take safety precautions. 'There has been an increase in the instances of physical attacks reported against Indian citizens in Ireland recently,' states the advisory. 'The embassy is in touch with the authorities concerned in Ireland in this regard. At the same time, all Indian citizens in Ireland are advised to take reasonable precautions for their personal security and avoid deserted areas, especially at odd hours,' the statement reads, adding emergency embassy contact details as 0899423734 and It came in the wake of a brutal attack on a 40-year-old Indian man at Parkhill Road in the Tallaght suburb of Dublin on July 19, described as 'mindless, racist violence' by Gardai had opened an investigation into the case and Indian Ambassador to Ireland Akhilesh Mishra was among those who took to social media to express shock over the attack. Last week, Dr Santosh Yadav took to LinkedIn to post details of a 'brutal, unprovoked racist attack'. The entrepreneur and AI expert stressed that it was not an isolated incident and called for 'concrete measures' from the governments of Ireland and India to ensure Indians feel safe to walk the streets of Dublin. His post revealed that a group of six teenagers attacked him from behind as he walked to his apartment in Dublin.
