‘Sunny Deol was the darkest chapter of my life': Suneel Darshan says it was like ‘indulging a little child', promises ‘divine justice'

Indian Express6 days ago
Filmmaker Suneel Darshan has had fallings out with several stars, including Akshay Kumar and Sunny Deol. He has even severed ties with his brother, director Dharmesh Darshan. In an interview, he described his association with Sunny as 'the darkest chapter' of his life, and said that their legal differences are yet to be resolved. Suneel has claimed that Sunny Deol took money from him to star in a project that never materialised. He went on to work with Sunny's brother, Bobby Deol, whom he had a pleasant equation with. He also declined to speak ill of their father, the legendary actor Dharmendra.
But he told journalist Vickey Lalwani that working with Sunny was like minding a child. Sunny was supposed to star in the film Jaanwar, which eventually went to a then-struggling Akshay Kumar because of their fall-out. Suneel and Akshay went their separate ways as well, after working on seven films together. Asked about the Sunny Deol episode, Suneel said, 'Akshay Kumar isn't a bad guy at all, actually. He has been much maligned. You cannot deny that he has his qualities. Sunny Deol is the darkest chapter in my life and career, but there is God above. There will be divine justice,' he said.

Explaining what happened, he continued, 'These are powerful people, and they care a damn. But there will be divine justice some day, I am sure. It's something too bitter to even put in words. I did three films with him. I did my first film, Inteqaam, with him. At that point, he was not a big star. He had a potential stardom to him. We had a relationship before that as well. We distributed a lot of his movies. We had a significant contribution in the project which was to be his launch. I believed in him. I believed that cinema needed people of his kind. During Inteqaam, I was a bit confused…'
Suneel said that his 'confusion' about Sunny's behaviour continued during their second film, Lootere. But he was sure something was wrong when they collaborated on their third project, Ajay. 'It was a nightmarish experience during production. It cost me much more… It was like indulging a little child, and getting him to complete your work. Honestly, I didn't want to do a fourth film with him, but I got stuck with him. And he used emotions, and fake relationships were mentioned, and he got me into a project that he was making for himself.'

‘Kingdom' movie review: Vijay Deverakonda ‘almost' returns to form in an ‘almost' watchable action-drama

Unlike Sunny Deol in Gadar 2 or Shah Rukh Khan in Pathaan, you may not be able to call this as a great comeback, but the hunger to attack a meaty character to flesh out all the juiciness seems to have returned read more Cast: Vijay Devarakonda, Satya Dev, Bhagyashrii Borse & Manish Chaudhary Director: Gowtam Tinnanuri Language: Telugu Actor Vijay Devarakonda has had quite a lull at the movies off late. His anger, rage, fury, and those patented and petrifying gazes became repetitive. All of these show up in his new film Kingdom as well, but with a story that feels far more coherent and captivating. It's impossible for brooding central characters not to be heavily bearded. If you need to show your hero is in deep agony, don't make him shave. That also shows up in Kingdom, but again, the semi-engaging narrative exists to take care of the cliches. The leading man has dual characters to play. His boss is the always watchable Manish Chaudhari, whose memorably toxic character in Rocket Singh made me aghast at the idea of stepping into an office and reporting to a manager. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A mission that obviously won't be revealed here, Deverakonda has to go undercover. The film has been written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the man behind Nani's immensely moving sports drama Jersey. The filmmaker has taken the grandeur miles ahead for his new film since he has given Kingdom the treatment of a high-octane spy thriller. The visuals are flawed but fascinating. The VFX and CGI-coded landscapes do at times act as a deterrence, but the central character's journey kind of cruises along smoothly to make you overlook the flaws. The one thing that's now getting tiresome is to see the leading man's supposedly intimidating empty glares at his leading ladies. And of course, grabbing them by their collars. Vijay did that with Ananya Panday in Liger, and he does that here with Bhagyashri Borse. But this time, the angst feels more personal. Kingdom has a tinge of Yash Chopra's Deewar when two brothers reunite only to find them on the opposite side of law. They are the two sides of the same coin that barely see eye to eye. The film has also been planned as a duology so there will be a lot of unanswered questions by the end of the film. Even the action scenes are different from the kind of stunts you are seeing in most of the movies today. The number of bullet shots easily overpowers the Animals and KGFs. Deverakonda lets his fists and guns do the talking. Even if you see the trailer of Kingdom, it's Manish Chaudhari's character doing most of the talking and dialoguebaazi. The leading man has only one line where he says he says with all his deadpan fury- Aag Laga doonga. This leading man has two different characters to portray, and as stated above, he has looked and performed much better in this movie. Unlike Sunny Deol in Gadar 2 or Shah Rukh Khan in Pathaan or even Salman Khan in Dabangg, you may not be able to call this as a great comeback, but the hunger and hunt to attack a meaty character to flesh out all the juiciness seems to have returned. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rating: 2.5 (out of 5 stars) Kingdom is now playing in cinemas

Sunny Leone on Pink Lips going viral on Reels: I'm happy it's on everybody's playlist again

One of the biggest perks of Reels is that sometimes it brings back some old classics to the fore that have either been forgotten or gone through their peak. Recently, a similar thing happened with Sunny Leone's song Pink Lips from Hate Story 2 (2014). The song got suddenly viral on Instagram Reels and the actor is herself surprised about this revived interest in the song. Sunny Leone in Pink Lips 'I had no idea about it until my team and I were travelling together one day and my manager said, 'Pink Lips is everywhere right now'. It didn't make sense and I asked, why, what happened? But it was so exciting and after I found out, I went on Instagram and saw some clips. It was amazing,' she says, adding, 'I'm happy it's on everybody's playlist again and they are enjoying it.' The song going viral brought back the memories of shooting for it too. Sunny Leone shares, 'I remember everything that happened on that set. I still recall how difficult it was during rehearsals, sometimes even frustrating. But the choreography was so cool and after going on set, everything felt amazing. When we shot it, I never thought that it will go viral one day like this. I just want to thank everybody for bringing back this amazing song. The song went viral back at the time of release and now it's back. I want to get to the bottom and find that one person who revived it. I want to meet them and say thank you.' Throughout her career, Sunny has done many special songs which have become hits, including Baby Doll from Ragini MMS 2 (2014) and Laila Main Laila from Raees (2016). The actor takes pride in the fact that her filmography includes these songs that are still revered. 'It does feel good as everywhere that I go, these songs get played. One of the first songs I did was Laila (from Shootout At Wadala, 2013), and it was John (Abraham, actor) who had turned to me and said, 'Trust me, people will be dancing and singing this song forever'. I didn't understand it at that time because I had just come into this industry, so I didn't know what he was talking about and what that meant. But he was right in every single way. When that song gets played today, it's awesome to hear it,' she says. However, Sunny laments the lack of effort that is put in promoting songs in films today. 'When I first came into this industry, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree with this, there was such a huge momentum behind releasing a song and it was incredible. I mean, your entire film could ride on that one song being amazing, because people loved going to the theatre to see that one song on the big screen,' she says. Reflecting on the change, the actor states, 'What's happened lately in the last five years or so is that even though good songs come in, they just come and go. They're amazing, but they don't stick. I really hope that all those artistes that are out there, their songs get that same love that some of my songs got when they were released. I would love to see that time come back where people would just come, get excited about listening to a film's music and go to the theatres to enjoy it on the big screen.'
