No cash, no problem: India-UAE payments go digital with UPI-AANI link
TL;DR
India and the UAE are linking UPI and AANI to make cross-border payments seamless.
This benefits over 3 million Indians living in the UAE and millions more visiting annually.
It reflects a shift towards shared digital systems as a tool of diplomacy.
India and the UAE are stitching a new kind of connection. Not pipelines, highways, or oil deals, but a payments system that could change daily life for millions.
Soon, Indian users will be able to pay in the UAE using UPI, the same app they use back home.
No cash withdrawals, no forex card charges, no currency confusion.
UPI-AANI Link: What's Happening
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and UAE's new instant payments platform AANI are being connected. The goal: make sending money between the two countries instant, secure, and cheap.
For the 3.5 million Indians living in the UAE, this could mean sending money home as easily as transferring funds domestically. For tourists and business travellers, paying for groceries, taxis, or restaurant meals could be as simple as scanning a QR code.
Officials say this is more than a technical upgrade. It adds another layer to an already deep relationship built on trade, energy, and people-to-people ties.
One App, Two Countries
Imagine paying your Dubai rent with your Indian bank app. Buying shawarma at Lulu Hypermarket without converting currencies. Booking a Careem taxi or ordering food, all directly from your UPI wallet.
That's the vision. Integration with AANI will expand UPI acceptance beyond select retailers like Lulu and Dubai Duty Free, where pilots have already launched. When fully operational, users will be able to:
Pay merchants in Dirhams using UPI
Transfer funds between Indian and UAE accounts in real time
Skip traditional remittance fees and delays
This isn't just convenient.

It's symbolic of how technology is collapsing old barriers and creating a single digital experience across borders.
Digital Infrastructure as Diplomacy
This move is part of India's larger strategy: exporting its digital public infrastructure to partner countries. Beyond UPI, India offers:
Aadhaar for digital identity
DigiLocker for verified documents
e-RUPI and ONDC for targeted welfare and open commerce
Singapore was among the first to link with UPI for cross-border payments. The UAE is now building a similar bridge, aligning with its push towards a near-cashless economy by the latter half of this decade.
For India, such digital diplomacy strengthens its leadership in the Global South, creating models that could be adapted from Africa to Southeast Asia.
Why This Partnership Matters
At its core, this is about people. Indians in the UAE send billions of dollars home every year. They travel back and forth for work, family, and business. By linking UPI and AANI, the two governments are making these movements faster, cheaper, and safer.
But there's a deeper message: shared digital infrastructure builds trust.
It's a trust that opens doors beyond payments, into deeper trade, data flows, regulatory harmonisation, and stronger economic ties.
What's Next?
Technical integration, regulatory approvals, and security testing are underway. NPCI International is expanding UPI acceptance across the UAE, prioritising sectors like transport, food, and retail. Officials expect phased rollouts to begin later this year, with full interoperability to follow.
If successful, the UPI-AANI link will become a blueprint for India's digital diplomacy, exporting not just goods or services, but the very infrastructure that powers its economy.

For Gazal Gupta, the project is also deeply emotional. "Mehrauli is where our story began. Over the past eight years, this store has witnessed our growth and the bonds we've built with our clients. Rupee reverses gains ahead of Jackson Hole meet; ends lower at 87.27/$
The Indian Rupee gave up early gains on Thursday to end lower ahead of the Jackson Hole event later today, where the Federal Reserve Chair's speech will be closely watched. The domestic currency closed 20 higher at 87.27 against the dollar on Thursday, according to Bloomberg. The unit has slipped 1.8 per cent in the current financial year and 1.93 per cent in 2025 so far. In August, it gained around 0.5 per cent against the dollar. The Rupee was again sold off at higher levels and has not been able to sustain its gain above 87 despite rising till that level for three continues days, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. "Today the main buyer was a big public sector bank who probably bought for oil/defence." RBI minutes showed that all six members of the MPC unanimously decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.5 per cent while maintaining the "neutral" stance. "Uncertainty in external demand, driven by tariff and geopolitical uncertainty, remains the major drag on growth as it also hinders private investment intentions, which is yet to show visible signs of improvement," said Sanjay Malhotra, governor, RBI, in the minutes. Meanwhile, in the US, the FOMC minutes showed that the majority of officials saw inflation as a greater risk. Investors, meanwhile, will also brace for Fed Chair Jerome Powell 's speech at the August summit in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The August 27 deadline for implementing the additional 25 per cent US tariffs on Indian goods, if enforced, could weigh further on the rupee. As the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been threatening India with more tariffs, probably the current appreciation of the rupee was not sustainable, Bhansali said. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.01 per cent at 98.22.

Jinxed? Dream11 joins list of BCCI team sponsors to face legal troubles
There is no bigger name than BCCI in cricket fraternity as of now, given the popularity of cricket in India. Every company wants to have some type of partnership with BCCI as it can prove to be the best way to put their names in the widespread market. However, the biggest partnership position that anyone can hold with BCCI is being the team sponsor, which means every match the team plays, players will wear the jersey with the team sponsor's name on it, putting the company in the best possible advertising position. However, as good as this deal sounds, the history behind it has been somewhat cursed in the 21st century, as all of India's team sponsors since 2001 have found themselves in some sort of legal or financial dispute after partnering with the BCCI. The latest addition to this list is Dream11, which became India's team sponsor in 2023 and is currently finding itself in a precarious situation after the Indian government passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 on August 21, putting a blanket ban on all real-money gaming apps. How the new bill impacts Dream11 According to the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, any app or game that involves real-time money — i.e. spending money in order to earn more money in real time — shall be banned completely, irrespective of being a luck-based or skill-based game. Dream11 comes under the skill-based section where consumers make their fantasy team and put money on it with hopes of earning more if the players perform well. This means, given the nature of the current services provided by Dream11, the new Bill will put a permanent ban on the app. When will the ban be enacted The new gaming Bill has passed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and now only needs the President's nod for the Bill to become an Act, after which all real-money gaming apps including Dream11 will be immediately banned from running their operations. BCCI jinx continues With Dream11 now facing legal trouble, they are part of an unwanted list of BCCI team sponsors to find themselves in some sort of operational trouble following their partnership with the Indian cricket team. But what does the complete list look like? Take a look. Sahara: 2001 to 2013 For over a decade, Sahara's logo was synonymous with the Indian cricket jersey, from the heartbreak of the 2003 World Cup final to the glory of 2011. Despite the massive visibility, Sahara's financial empire crumbled. After raising about ₹24,000 crore from 30 million investors, the group faced SEBI action for regulatory violations. The Supreme Court ordered deposits, but non-compliance led to Subrata Roy's arrest in 2014. Even after his death in 2023, efforts to recover funds for investors continue. Star India: 2014 to 2017 Star India replaced Sahara, coinciding with the rise of modern icons like Kohli and Rohit. The brand's presence on the jersey symbolised a new cricketing era, but business fortunes soured. Walt Disney-owned Star faced scrutiny for abuse of market dominance, prompting a Competition Commission probe. Meanwhile, Hotstar's struggles forced a merger with Jio, leaving the once-dominant broadcaster weakened. Oppo (2017 to 2020) Oppo signed a massive ₹1,079 crore deal but exited early due to poor returns. Legal battles over patent disputes with Nokia and InterDigital further dented its standing. Byju's stepped in, honouring Oppo's financial terms, but soon spiralled into its own troubles. By 2023, the BCCI had moved NCLT over a ₹158 crore default, adding to the edtech giant's mounting financial woes. Byju's (2020 to 2022) Initially hailed as the saviour of BCCI's sponsorship deal, Byju's soon became another cautionary tale. Payment defaults, insolvency petitions, and regulatory scrutiny left the once-celebrated edtech unicorn fighting for survival, despite a temporary truce with the cricket board in court. Dream11 (2023 to Present) Dream11, the current jersey sponsor until 2026, faces its own share of uncertainty. With the BCCI wary of links to betting and real-money gaming, Dream11's legality has been under review. The company was also hit with tax demands over alleged GST evasion of ₹1,200 crore earlier. Though one notice was withdrawn, fresh scrutiny from GST authorities is expected, leaving its sponsorship future in question. Is this the end of the road for Dream11? The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 surely puts the main operation of Dream11 to rest, but it does not actually mean the end of the road for the fantasy gaming giant, as they can still keep running their apps with a subscription model where players can pay some money to try their hand at fantasy gaming without any real money in return. However, it is unlikely to keep them in the position to stay as BCCI team sponsors, as their revenue will take a huge hit. But how this will actually impact their partnership with BCCI, we will have to wait some time to get the final answer.
