Equities barely lower, US dollar dips with Treasury yields

Reuters18-07-2025
NEW YORK/LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - U.S. equities edged lower on Friday, a day after the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq scored record closes, as investors looked ahead to corporate earnings and digested economic data, while the dollar weakened and U.S. Treasury yields fell.
U.S. consumer sentiment improved in July and inflation expectations declined, but households still saw substantial risk of price pressures increasing in the future, the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers released on Friday showed.
Another report showed U.S. single-family homebuilding dropped to an 11-month low in June as high mortgage rates and economic uncertainty hampered home purchases, suggesting residential investment contracted again in the second quarter.
On Thursday, news of stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales and jobless claims data suggested modest improvements in economic activity, helping to push equities higher.
Still, many investors were focused on positive expectations for corporate earnings and making bets ahead of the expiration of July equity options, said Bruce Zaro, managing director at Granite Wealth Management in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
"Today's action is all about option expiration as investors make bets on the meat of earnings season, which comes in the next few weeks when all the growth and technology companies report," said Zaro, noting that beyond earnings, investors want to benefit from a strong performance trend in megacap names. "There's a fear of missing out."
A solid start to the U.S. earnings season - with companies including streaming giant Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab beating forecasts - is supporting investor confidence, said Eren Osman, managing director of wealth management at Arbuthnot Latham, noting he was "pretty constructive on the (U.S.) macro backdrop."
Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab and Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab are among the companies reporting half-year results next week, which will further test the market.
On Wall Street as of 11:12 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), opens new tab fell 173.00 points, or 0.39%, to 44,310.88, the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab fell 3.55 points, or 0.05%, to 6,293.90 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), opens new tab fell 8.68 points, or 0.03%, to 20,878.31.
MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe (.MIWD00000PUS), opens new tab rose 1.57 points, or 0.17%, to 927.86 while the pan-European STOXX 600 (.STOXX), opens new tab index was flat.
The U.S. dollar slipped on the day but was still angling for a weekly gain, as investors weighed signs that tariffs may be starting to fuel inflation pressures and monitored Federal Reserve policy as U.S. President Donald Trump increases pressure on Chair Jerome Powell.
The dollar index , which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, fell 0.28% to 98.23.
The euro was up 0.51% at $1.1654 while Sterling strengthened 0.23% to $1.3446.
Against the Japanese yen , the dollar weakened 0.15% to 148.37 as polls showed Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's coalition was in danger of losing its majority in the upper house election on Sunday.
In Treasuries, the benchmark U.S. 10-year note yield fell 3 basis points to 4.434%, from 4.463% late on Thursday. The 30-year bond yield fell 1 basis point.
The 2-year note yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations for the Federal Reserve, fell 4.8 basis points to 3.869%, from 3.917% late on Thursday.
Fed Governor Christopher Waller said on Thursday he continued to believe the U.S. central bank should cut interest rates at the end of this month, though most officials who have spoken publicly have signaled no desire to move.
In commodities, crude oil futures rose on Friday as investors weighed new European Union .
U.S. crude rose 0.53% to $67.91 a barrel and Brent rose to $69.83 per barrel, up 0.45% on the day.
Gold prices rose on Friday as a weaker U.S. dollar and ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainty boosted demand for the safe-haven metal, while platinum prices eased after reaching their highest level since 2014. Spot gold rose 0.5% to $3,355.34 an ounce.

EU-UK trade deal: Ireland 'not exactly celebrating', minister of state says

Ireland is "not exactly celebrating" the new EU-US trade deal, an Irish minister has said, but added that it provides certainty. US President Donald Trump and European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday they have agreed a US tariff on all EU goods of 15%. That is half the 30% import tax rate Trump had threatened to implement starting on Friday. He said the 27-member bloc would open its markets to US exporters with zero per cent tariffs on certain Richmond, a minister of state in Ireland's foreign affairs department, said the deal "gives us that certainty that has been lacking in the last number of months". Among EU countries, Ireland is the most reliant on the US as an export market."We're not exactly celebrating this, it's not a case that this is a good thing but it's probably the least bad option based on what we were facing a couple of days ago, the prospect of a 30% tariff," Richmond told BBC Radio Ulster's Good Morning Ulster on Monday. "The EU is a tough negotiator but this isn't like any trade deal I have ever experienced before, in my 15 odd years of working on EU trade deals. It is what it is and we move on."He added: "We don't want a tariff war, tariffs are a bad thing. We want stability for businesses and we have that today."Trump has wielded tariffs against major US trade partners in a bid to reorder the global economy and trim the American trade der Leyen has hailed the deal, saying it will bring stability for both allies, who together account for almost a third of global EU's top official described the deal as a "framework" agreement, with further technical details to be negotiated "over the next weeks". Speaking of the pharmaceutical sector, Richmond said there was a "case made" that certain medications would be tariff free. "These are some of the areas we will have to dig into, but absolutely we have a lot to work on," he said. "The pharmaceutical sector isn't just really important to a lot of Irish businesses, it must be said it's really important to a lot of American consumers and crucially patients who rely on these drugs too." 'New era of stability' Speaking following the announcement, Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin said the news of the trade deal is "very welcome".Martin said the fact that tariffs would still be higher than before would make trade "more expensive and more challenging".However, he added that the agreement will bring "a new era of stability" and will "help protect many jobs in Ireland".Speaking to Good Morning Ulster on Monday, former UK ambassador to the US Lord Kim Darroch said: "As an outcome, it's a relief I guess for everyone in the European Union that it's not worse, but this isn't anything for great celebration, this is a backwards step."In 2024, Ireland exported goods worth £60.4bn ($81.1bn) to the commission has the mandate to negotiate trade deals for the entire bloc - but it still requires approval by EU member states, whose ambassadors will meet on Monday for a debrief from the commission.

Oil steadies as investors assess US-EU deal

LONDON, July 28 (Reuters) - Oil prices edged higher on Monday as investors assessed a trade deal between the United States and the European Union, while a stronger US dollar and lower oil imports by India weighed on prices. Brent crude futures were up 30 cents, or 0.4%, to $68.74 a barrel by 0813 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude stood at $65.43 a barrel, up 27 cents, or 0.4%. The U.S.-European Union trade deal and a possible extension in the U.S.-China tariff pause are supporting global financial markets and oil prices, IG markets analyst Tony Sycamore said. Sunday's U.S.-EU framework trade pact sets an import tariff of 15% on most EU goods, while U.S. President Trump said the deal calls for $750 billion of EU purchases of U.S. energy in coming years. Senior U.S. and Chinese officials will meet in Stockholm on Monday, aiming to extend a tariff truce before an August 12 deadline. Oil pared most of its gains on Monday after Brent futures rose above $69 a barrel earlier in the day. Oil retreated from those levels as focus shifted to a stronger US dollar and lower oil imports by India, following the removal of another uncertainty with the US-EU deal, PVM analyst Tamas Varga said. On the supply side, an OPEC+ panel is unlikely to alter existing plans to raise oil output when it meets on Monday, four OPEC+ delegates told Reuters on July 25. ING expects OPEC+ will at least complete the full return of 2.2 million barrels per day of the additional voluntary supply cuts by the end of September. Also on the supply side, Venezuela's state-run oil company PDVSA is readying to resume work, once Trump reinstates authorisations for its partners to operate and export oil under swaps, company sources said. In the Middle East, Yemen's Houthis said on Sunday they would target ships of companies that do business with Israeli ports, regardless of nationality, in what they called a fourth phase of military operations against Israel over the Gaza conflict.

Australia's green bank makes record $2.3 billion in clean energy investments

SYDNEY, July 28 (Reuters) - Australia's green bank on Monday said it invested a record A$3.5 billion ($2.29 billion) in clean energy projects and grid infrastructure last financial year to accelerate the country's transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Australia's coal power generation makes it one of the highest polluting countries per capita in the world. It plans to shut all coal stations by 2038 and has pledged to achieve a target of 82% renewable generation by 2030. But analysts have called for increased investment to meet this goal, achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and ensure energy security. Wood Mackenzie projects Australia is on track to hit only 58% renewable energy generation by the end of the decade. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation, Australia's A$32.5 billion green bank, has a mandate to 'facilitate increased flows of finance into the clean energy sector and to facilitate the achievement of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets'. During the 2024-25 financial year, it committed A$4.7 billion, including A$3.5 billion to renewable energy projects and grid infrastructure. The CEFC said it was a 'record' level of investment and more than double the amount of the previous fiscal year. The largest transaction was A$2.8 billion towards a programme to improve Australia's national power grid, including A$2.1 billion for construction of a new electricity transmission link on the country's east coast. The CEFC said it was ramping up investment in clean energy to help Australia meet its renewable energy and emissions targets. 'Australia requires ongoing investment in renewables and long-duration storage, clean energy affordability for consumers and measures to cut emissions,' CEO Ian Learmonth said. 'Investment activity at this scale promises substantial economic and local employment benefits across Australia, strengthening our economy for a net zero future while making critical progress towards decarbonisation.'
