Tripura to introduce biometric attendance system in govt-run tribal hostels
The Tribal Welfare department runs 164 tribal hostels, while 43 hostels are functioning under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council .
The state government spends ₹80 crore annually for running these hostels.
"Tribal Welfare minister Bikash Debbarma held a review meeting recently to check the functioning of tribal hostels. In the meeting, a number of decisions were taken to streamline the system to provide better facilities to the students," Tribal Welfare department Director Subhasish Das told PTI.
He said the biometric attendance will be introduced in all hostels which function under the direct control of the department.
"The boarders need to use biometric attendance system twice a day - morning and evening. This will not only help the department to maintain transparency in attendance but also check the alleged malpractice in running the hostels," Das said.
The biometric system will be introduced in TTAADC and NGO-run hostels in the second phase, he said, adding initiatives have been taken to develop a dedicated software for this purpose.
Das said the department which spends ₹80 per day per student on food, has proposed the government to increase the food money to ₹120 in view of the price rise.
Out of 164 hostels, smart class facilities will be introduced in 100 hostels in the first phase so that the students residing in the hostels can get online classes to be controlled from a centralised mechanism in Agartala, he said.
The department will provide digital library facility with 5G Internet connection to all hostels so that students could get the best possible facilities in their hostel, he said, adding solar lighting system will also be provided to hostels.
Das said steps are being initiated to introduce clean and green awards to hostels at subdivision, district and state level for maintaining cleanliness and greenery.
He said the department has already proposed to the government to appoint superintendent for all the hostels to manage them efficiently.

West Bengal teacher who lost job after SC verdict dies of ‘stress-induced' stroke
A teacher who lost his job after the Supreme Court's recent cancellation of nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching appointments died on Friday (August 15, 2025) allegedly following a stroke and consequent brain haemorrhage. Subal Soren, 35, was a teacher of political science for classes 11 and 12 at the State-run Bagalaseni High School in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district, according to Suvojit Das, a spokesperson for the 'untainted' teachers' forum, Jogyo Shikkhok Shikkhika Adhikar Mancha (JSSAM). He was also a member of the Adivasi community and hailed from Sarki village in Mohanpur. Mr. Soren was notably one of the petitioners named in the review petition filed at the Supreme Court seeking a review of its April 3 judgment. The apex court, on April 3, had upheld the Calcutta High Court's cancellation of job appointments from 2016, citing a 'vitiated and tainted' recruitment process by the West Bengal School Service Commission. Protests had erupted among the sacked teachers across the State over their demand for the segregation of 'untainted' candidates and the reinstatement of their jobs without re-examinations. The apex court directed the West Bengal government to complete a fresh recruitment process for assistant teachers' positions by December 31 this year, till when the sacked teachers have been allowed to work with full salaries. Mr. Soren had been a prominent figure at the forefront of the agitations and had been present in multiple instances when police clashed with protesting teachers. 'Subal Sir had no prevailing ailments. He suddenly fell very ill around Monday and was transferred to a private medical hospital in Kolkata a few days later. He suffered a stroke from the unbearable mental agony of having lost his job. This is the mental and physical toll that this sudden job loss is taking on us,' Mr. Das told The Hindu. Mr. Soren was declared dead around 8 in the morning on August 15. He is survived by his wife and one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. After his passing, fellow teachers who had been agitating for the last many months gathered near the hospital at the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass to pay their respects. 'We organised a memorial march from the hospital gates to Ruby Crossing with his remains on Friday afternoon, to honour his contribution to our movement. However, the police tried to hinder our march and even tried to speed off with the body despite us having consent from Mr. Soren's family,' Mr. Das alleged. He added that teachers had to lie down on the road in front of the ambulance to prevent them from taking away the corpse prematurely from the hospital premises. However, the Kolkata Police, in a statement, claimed that these allegations are false. 'Legal action is being initiated against those responsible for spreading such misinformation,' the statement said. Subsequent clashes with the police had also allegedly taken place at Debra, where Mr. Soren's body had been taken for the last rites.

Rights body urges UN, diplomatic community to press Bangladesh for Hindu priest's release
New Delhi: New Delhi-based rights group -- Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) – on Saturday urged the diplomatic community and the United Nations to intervene with the Bangladesh government to release Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a former leader of ISKON and spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, on the occasion of Janmashtami. Chinmoy Das has been in custody since November 25, 2024, in connection with a sedition case. He was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka for allegedly defaming the national flag. Das was also arrested in connection with the murder of assistant government prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif, who was hacked to death during the violent protest sparked by the Hindu leader's arrest. The RRAG on Saturday requested the diplomatic community and the United Nations to intervene with the Government of Bangladesh to release the Hindu Priest from prison custody on the occasion of Janmashtami. The rights body, in a statement, said that Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff General Waqar Uz Zaman, Chief of the Bangladesh Navy Admiral Mohd Nazmul Hussain, and Chief of the Bangladesh Air Force Hasan Mahmud Khan attended the Janmashtami function, the birthday of Lord Krishna, on Saturday in Dhaka. 'This is a sham and a desperate attempt to beguile the international community in the light of the ongoing, relentless atrocities against the Hindus. A total of 2,485 incidents of violence against religious and ethnic minorities were reported during the year of the reign of the caretaker government under the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus,' RRAG Director Suhas Chakma said in a statement. 'If there was any conspiracy by Das to murder the lawyer, it was done by the Bangladeshi security forces under whose custody he was. None of the security officials of the Bangladesh government has been charged for this murder. The prosecution is opposing the bail of Chinmoy Das to send a clear message to the Hindus not to organise any political meeting but remain restricted to religious programmes like celebrating Janmashtami,' Chakma said.
