Tripura BJP's tribal leaders in Delhi to meet party's central leadership

The party had already completed the organisational election from booth to district levels, but the state president is yet to be elected. 'We are in Delhi to meet the party's organisational general secretary BL Santosh, our national president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. We will have discussions with the party's central leadership on organisational matters and development issues,' former MP Rebati Tripura told PTI over the telephone. Although he refused to elaborate on the organisational matters, the ex-MP said the BJP-led government in the state has taken several steps for the development of the indigenous people. 'We will discuss how to streamline the process to give more benefits to the tribal people in our state,' he said. However, he did not specify why the Janajati Morcha had cancelled the programme to mark International Day for the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9. The Janajati Morcha had announced that it would organise a rally in the state's capital and a programme on the occasion. Tripura government orders probe into assault of two school students
The Tripura government has ordered an investigation into an incident of assault of two students at the hostel of the State's first higher education school. The State's Tribal Welfare Minister, Bikash Debbarma, on Monday visited the Umakanta Academy, which was founded in 1890 by King Bir Chandra Manikya, and told the students in the higher classes not to indulge in ragging or physical assault in future. Parents of one of the two assaulted students had lodged a complaint with the West Agartala Police Station against three students in their higher classes. They alleged that the incident of physical assault and verbal abuse of three junior students occurred recently after they refused to get liquor from a marketplace. The school, named after a Bengali Minister of the royal court, Umakanta Das, now has an English branch. The victim students from junior classes are studying in the English medium. The hostel houses only tribal students, and they are given free accommodation and meals. The general school and its English branch, however, are open to all communities. Mr. Debbarma, along with officials, visited the school and hostel to inquire about the allegations first-hand. He said untoward incidents of such nature undermined the legacy of the school, which has produced laurels over the decades. He warned that the government would act strictly should there be a repetition of such an incident. He directed the hostel warden and guards to be vigilant. The Minister said that the incident was now under investigation.

Tripura to introduce biometric attendance system in govt-run tribal hostels
Agartala, The Tripura Tribal Welfare department will introduce biometric attendance system in all government-run tribal hostels to closely monitor the presence of students, an official said on Monday. The Tribal Welfare department runs 164 tribal hostels, while 43 hostels are functioning under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council . The state government spends ₹80 crore annually for running these hostels. "Tribal Welfare minister Bikash Debbarma held a review meeting recently to check the functioning of tribal hostels. In the meeting, a number of decisions were taken to streamline the system to provide better facilities to the students," Tribal Welfare department Director Subhasish Das told PTI. He said the biometric attendance will be introduced in all hostels which function under the direct control of the department. "The boarders need to use biometric attendance system twice a day - morning and evening. This will not only help the department to maintain transparency in attendance but also check the alleged malpractice in running the hostels," Das said. The biometric system will be introduced in TTAADC and NGO-run hostels in the second phase, he said, adding initiatives have been taken to develop a dedicated software for this purpose. Das said the department which spends ₹80 per day per student on food, has proposed the government to increase the food money to ₹120 in view of the price rise. Out of 164 hostels, smart class facilities will be introduced in 100 hostels in the first phase so that the students residing in the hostels can get online classes to be controlled from a centralised mechanism in Agartala, he said. The department will provide digital library facility with 5G Internet connection to all hostels so that students could get the best possible facilities in their hostel, he said, adding solar lighting system will also be provided to hostels. Das said steps are being initiated to introduce clean and green awards to hostels at subdivision, district and state level for maintaining cleanliness and greenery. He said the department has already proposed to the government to appoint superintendent for all the hostels to manage them efficiently.
