Chinese and Philippine vessels collide in South China Sea confrontation

The Sun2 days ago
MANILA: A Chinese navy vessel collided with a coast guard ship from the same country while chasing a Philippine patrol boat in the disputed South China Sea.
The Philippine government released video footage showing the dramatic confrontation near Scarborough Shoal on Monday.
Commodore Jay Tarriela, a spokesman for the Philippine coast guard, said the incident occurred during an aid distribution mission for local fishermen.
The footage captured a China Coast Guard ship and a larger vessel marked with the number 164 crashing into each other with a loud impact.
'The CCG 3104, which was chasing the BRP Suluan at high speed, performed a risky manoeuvre from the vessel's starboard quarter, leading to the impact with the PLA Navy warship,' Tarriela stated.
He added that the collision caused significant damage to the Chinese coast guard ship's forecastle, making it unseaworthy.
The Chinese embassy in Manila did not immediately comment on the incident.
This marks the latest escalation in ongoing tensions between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea.
Beijing claims nearly the entire waterway despite a 2016 international tribunal ruling that rejected its legal basis.
Scarborough Shoal, a triangular reef chain, has been a major flashpoint since China took control of it from the Philippines in 2012.
Tarriela told AFP the Chinese crew ignored offers of assistance from the Filipino vessel after the collision.
Earlier in the encounter, the BRP Suluan reportedly evaded a water cannon attack from Chinese ships.
The South China Sea sees over 60% of global maritime trade pass through its contested waters.
It remains unclear whether any injuries resulted from Monday's incident. – AFP

Eight Chinese nationals nabbed in suspected Pogo hub in Davao City

DAVAO CITY: Eight Chinese nationals allegedly operating a Pogo hub inside a residential subdivision here were arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Tuesday (Aug 12) afternoon. 'The operation was initiated by the agency after a homeowner's complaint regarding suspicious activities inside a residential property,' said lawyer Arcelito Albao, director of the NBI's South-Eastern Mindanao Regional Office. Prompt surveillance and verification by NBI agents confirmed the presence of Pogo operations inside a house at Gardenia Street, Montclair Highlands Subdivision along Diversion Road, Buhangin District here. Seized items from the arrested individuals included 10 personal computers and multiple mobile phones. 'Operators have been splitting into smaller groups and moving into residential areas to avoid detection following the nationwide crackdown,' Albao said. 'It has been an emerging pattern in illegal Pogo activities. There is a need for constant community vigilance and rapid law enforcement response,' he added. The eight individuals, six men and two women, are now in NBI custody and will be charged with violation of Presidential Decree No.1602 (Anti-illegal gambling), Republic Act 9160 (Anti-Money Laundering), and Republic Act 10363 (Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons). The NBI-SEMRO continues to urge the public to report suspicious activities in their respective communities, including illegal offshore gaming operations. 'Crimes often accompany them, including money laundering, cybercrime, and human trafficking,' Albao said. The operation on Tuesday demonstrates the NBI's campaign as directed by NBI Director Jaime Santiago against offshore gaming that undermines the nation's economy and national security, he added. 'The Bureau's continued commitment to act swiftly on community intelligence, track evolving criminal tactics, and disallow illegal gambling operations to rebrand, resize, or relocate as a way to circumvent the law,' Santiago said in a statement. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

[Watch] Akmal Salleh Demands Prosecution in Kepala Batas Flag Blunder, His Own Team Botches Flag In FB Post

Subscribe to our FREE Just days after UMNO Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh launched a fiery crusade against a Malaysian Chinese hardware store owner for accidentally hanging the Malaysian flag upside down, his own Terengganu division managed to botch the Jalur Gemilang – posting an image with only 12 stripes instead of the official 14. The timing couldn't be more perfect for a masterclass in political hypocrisy. While Akmal was busy threatening to storm the Penang shop, demanding prosecutions and whipping up racial tensions over an honest mistake that was quickly corrected, his own team also made a mistake. Terengganu UMNO Youth chief Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera admitted the 'unintentional' error in a Facebook statement, taking full responsibility for the design blunder. 'We will not defend the designer although he did it for free,' he said – a luxury not extended to the 59-year-old shopkeeper who faced threats of protests and prosecution. Akmal's Damage Control: Trying to Have It Both Ways When confronted with his own team's flag blunder, Akmal posted a defensive response on Facebook. He began by dismissing his critics as idiots who hadn't watched his previous video completely, then claimed he would demand the same investigation and heavy punishment for the UMNO Youth Terengganu poster creator as he had for the Chinese shopkeeper. He insisted that regardless of the person being from UMNO Youth, Malay, and Muslim, wrong was still wrong, and the same action should be taken. He concluded by declaring that he wasn't a hypocrite like 'their gang', but his attempt at appearing consistent fell flat. While he claimed to demand 'the same action,' there were no actual threats of storming the Terengganu UMNO office, no calls for criminal prosecution, and no mobilisation of protesters. Setting the Record Straight The hardware store owner, Pang Chin Tiang, has since apologised and corrected his display, even expressing his continued love for the country despite the trauma of being targeted. Addressing the misunderstanding, he clarified that it was merely due to measuring the pole length during the setup. His dignified response turned what could have been a divisive incident into an unexpected display of Malaysian unity. With a dedication spanning over 10 years, Pang has Political Leaders Weigh In: A Call for Dignity The controversy drew attention from Loke, who is also Transport Minister, called the threats to protest at the elderly man's shop 'blatant bullying' that was utterly unacceptable. He argued that the Attorney General should make decisions without being influenced by political pressure. DAP also announced they would sponsor a giant Malaysian flag for the shop and distribute 831 free flags to anyone who tried to cause trouble there. Myanmar junta committing 'systematic' torture: UN report

It said there had been "systematic commission" of torture including "sexual slavery", the "burning of sexual body parts with cigarettes or burned objects", and fingernails being pulled out with pliers. 13 Aug 2025 04:00pm A policeman walks on a street in Yangon, Myanmar on July 19, 2025. - (Photo by AFP) YANGON - UN investigators say they have recorded "systematic" torture in Myanmar's military-run detention facilities including beatings, electric shocks and gang rape. Myanmar has been consumed by civil war since the military deposed the civilian government in a 2021 coup, with troops fighting an array of pro-democracy guerrillas and ethnic armed groups. The fighting has been accompanied by a crackdown which has seen nearly 30,000 people arrested, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners monitor group. A report by the UN's Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) said it had identified "serious abuses during interrogations and in detention facilities". A junta spokesman could not be reached for comment on the allegations laid out in an IIMM annual report released Tuesday, drawing on testimony from nearly 600 eyewitnesses. It said there had been "systematic commission" of torture including "sexual slavery", the "burning of sexual body parts with cigarettes or burned objects", and fingernails being pulled out with pliers. It also found evidence "indicating that children -- ranging from two to 17 years of age -- have been detained, often as proxies for their parents". "Some of the detained children have been subjected to torture, ill-treatment or sexual and gender-based crimes," it added. IIMM chief Nicholas Koumjian said the organisation had seen "a continued increase in the frequency and brutality of atrocities" but had made "headway in identifying the perpetrators". "We are working towards the day when the perpetrators will have to answer for their actions in a court of law," he added. The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor has already requested an arrest warrant for junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, who ousted and jailed elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. That warrant request relates to alleged atrocities committed by the military on Myanmar's Rohingya minority in 2017. All sides in Myanmar's civil war have been accused of committing war crimes, and the IIMM report said it had also identified cases where opposition groups had committed summary executions of captives. - AFP
