Chinese and Philippine vessels collide in South China Sea confrontation
The Philippine government released video footage showing the dramatic confrontation near Scarborough Shoal on Monday.
Commodore Jay Tarriela, a spokesman for the Philippine coast guard, said the incident occurred during an aid distribution mission for local fishermen.
The footage captured a China Coast Guard ship and a larger vessel marked with the number 164 crashing into each other with a loud impact.
'The CCG 3104, which was chasing the BRP Suluan at high speed, performed a risky manoeuvre from the vessel's starboard quarter, leading to the impact with the PLA Navy warship,' Tarriela stated.
He added that the collision caused significant damage to the Chinese coast guard ship's forecastle, making it unseaworthy.
The Chinese embassy in Manila did not immediately comment on the incident.
This marks the latest escalation in ongoing tensions between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea.
Beijing claims nearly the entire waterway despite a 2016 international tribunal ruling that rejected its legal basis.
Scarborough Shoal, a triangular reef chain, has been a major flashpoint since China took control of it from the Philippines in 2012.
Tarriela told AFP the Chinese crew ignored offers of assistance from the Filipino vessel after the collision.
Earlier in the encounter, the BRP Suluan reportedly evaded a water cannon attack from Chinese ships.
The South China Sea sees over 60% of global maritime trade pass through its contested waters.
It remains unclear whether any injuries resulted from Monday's incident. – AFP

Eight Chinese nationals nabbed in suspected Pogo hub in Davao City
DAVAO CITY: Eight Chinese nationals allegedly operating a Pogo hub inside a residential subdivision here were arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Tuesday (Aug 12) afternoon. The eight individuals, six men and two women, are now in NBI custody and will be charged with violation of Presidential Decree No.1602 (Anti-illegal gambling), Republic Act 9160 (Anti-Money Laundering), and Republic Act 10363 (Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons). The NBI-SEMRO continues to urge the public to report suspicious activities in their respective communities, including illegal offshore gaming operations. 'Crimes often accompany them, including money laundering, cybercrime, and human trafficking,' Albao said. The operation on Tuesday demonstrates the NBI's campaign as directed by NBI Director Jaime Santiago against offshore gaming that undermines the nation's economy and national security, he added. Myanmar has been consumed by civil war since the military deposed the civilian government in a 2021 coup, with troops fighting an array of pro-democracy guerrillas and ethnic armed groups. The fighting has been accompanied by a crackdown which has seen nearly 30,000 people arrested, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners monitor group. A report by the UN's Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) said it had identified "serious abuses during interrogations and in detention facilities". A junta spokesman could not be reached for comment on the allegations laid out in an IIMM annual report released Tuesday, drawing on testimony from nearly 600 eyewitnesses. It said there had been "systematic commission" of torture including "sexual slavery", the "burning of sexual body parts with cigarettes or burned objects", and fingernails being pulled out with pliers. It also found evidence "indicating that children -- ranging from two to 17 years of age -- have been detained, often as proxies for their parents". "Some of the detained children have been subjected to torture, ill-treatment or sexual and gender-based crimes," it added. IIMM chief Nicholas Koumjian said the organisation had seen "a continued increase in the frequency and brutality of atrocities" but had made "headway in identifying the perpetrators". "We are working towards the day when the perpetrators will have to answer for their actions in a court of law," he added. The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor has already requested an arrest warrant for junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, who ousted and jailed elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. That warrant request relates to alleged atrocities committed by the military on Myanmar's Rohingya minority in 2017. All sides in Myanmar's civil war have been accused of committing war crimes, and the IIMM report said it had also identified cases where opposition groups had committed summary executions of captives. - AFP
