Di Canio questions Inzaghi as Inter players ‘turn their backs'

Yahoo27-04-2025
Paolo Di Canio questions Simone Inzaghi's ability to motivate the team, but feels Francesco Acerbi is the only Inter player who 'still believes' as the others 'just turn their backs.'
The Nerazzurri suffered their third consecutive defeat across all competitions on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Roma at San Siro.

It's undoubtedly not the best way to approach the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona in Catalunya.
'If this is the real version of Inter, with two games coming up against Barcelona, they'll struggle to get a result against anyone,' Di Canio told Sky Sport via TMW.
'I may agree about physical issues, but after 15 rounds, Inter already had seven fewer points than in the previous season. Motivations make a difference. There are coaches who know how to instil it, and coaches like Inzaghi who are very good in other aspects, like the style of play. Simone has delighted us with his football, but then there is a management issue.'

'You can't only blame it on fatigue when you concede twice against Parma. Inter have been pegged back too many times, and it's not just about being tired,' continued Di Canio.
'Against Bayern, everyone was ready to take shots to their faces to avoid conceding. This doesn't mean Inzaghi isn't a good coach; he's excellent at certain things. However, Conte and Inzaghi are different, as each has something the other lacks. It's true that some players have not been helpful, for example, Zielinski came on and played terribly.'
The former striker feels that just one Inter player showed the proper attitude against Roma today.
'We are talking about the team that suffered comebacks 11 times in the last 20 minutes of games. It's about bringing home results with determination and grit, the only one I saw celebrating when Inter were 1-0 down was Acerbi,' he noted.

'He made me feel sorry for him. He's the only one who still believes, while the others just turn their backs.'
Inter have already played 52 games across all competitions this season, but their treble dreams ended earlier this week, when they suffered a 3-0 loss in a Coppa Italia second leg semifinal against city rivals Milan.

Ferguson impresses in training as potential Roma debut looms

Evan Ferguson is impressing his boss in training as he hopes for a loan debut with Roma. The Albion striker kicked off his stint in Italy with a flurry of goals. While things have settled down since then, he is said to be impressing boss Gian Luigi Gasperini. Ferguson has not really caught the eye in subsequent fixtures against tougher opponents, including Everton. But he is in the running for a role in the serious action. Roma kick off their Serie A season on Saturday when Bologna visit the Stadio Olimpico. Gasperini's satisfaction with the Republic of Ireland striker came to light amid transfer talk involving a colleague. Milan are keen on Artem Dovbyk, the Ukrainian centre-forward, with whom Ferguson is vying for a place. Read more... Julio Enciso is among them and has been linked with various clubs as he races to get fit after knee surgery during the summer. .

Roma continue talks for Bailey, Echeverri and Fabio Silva

Roma remain very active on the market. Giallorossi sporting director Frederic Massara must seek to strengthen the attack as quickly as possible for an increasingly impatient Gasperini. The new name is that of Leon Bailey, who played a key role in Roma's defeat to Aston Villa in the recent friendly. The Jamaican winger is valued at around €30 million and can be adapted to the left. At the same time, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Massara has resumed contact with City for Echeverri. The Giallorossi are considering the possibility of bringing him on a dry loan. Finally, there's the possibility of Fabio Silva, who already has an agreement with Roma. The agreement between the Giallorossi and Wolves is still pending.

Rangers face Champions League exit after early collapse against Club Brugge

Rangers' horrendous start to their Champions League play-off against Club Brugge left them with a bruising 3-1 defeat at Ibrox and staring at the exit door. In a nightmare beginning to the first leg, Gers defender Nasser Djiga inexplicably allowed a long ball past him in the third minute and grateful visiting striker Romeo Vermant coolly lofted the ball over stranded goalkeeper Jack Butland. And further strikes from Jorne Spileers and Brandon Mechele had the visitors 3-0 up after just 20 minutes. Brazilian striker Danilo pulled a goal back four minutes after the break and the home side rallied, but the Belgian outfit stood firm. The return game against Nicky Hayen's men in Belgium next Wednesday will require a huge turnaround, albeit the Govan club are assured Europa League group phase football at least. Wins over Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen in previous qualifiers revealed flaws in Russell Martin's new-look Gers side and raised concerns in the stands, as did back-to-back draws to start the Premiership campaign. And once again the former Southampton boss incurred the ire of the Light Blue legions. Martin made 10 changes for Saturday's 4-2 Premier Sports Cup victory over Alloa and seven for the visit of the Belgian outfit. The news that elicited the most surprise was that 19-year-old England youth international Jayden Meghoma, who signed on loan from Brentford on Sunday, went straight in at left-back with Max Aarons preferred to experienced club captain James Tavernier at right-back. Jack Butland, John Souttar, Mohamed Diomande, Oliver Antman, Djeidi Gassama, and Nicolas Raskin all returned. Greece international Christos Tzolis, who scored for Greece against Scotland at Hampden Park in March and who has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, started for the visitors, while former Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet was in goal. All eyes were on Meghoma, who spent last season on loan at Preston, and he started positively. But a horror mistake by Djiga allowed Tzolis' pass to give Vermant an easy finish which stunned everyone inside the ground. The Gers fans were coming to terms with the needless loss of a goal when Tzolis' corner from the right was knocked past Butland by the unmarked Spileers from 12 yards. The boos that rang round the ground intensified when Mechele, making his 500th appearance for Brugge, stepped all too easily in front of Danilo just outside the Rangers box and gave Butland no chance with an arrowed right-footed drive. A three-goal deficit at the break left the Gers support in a state of shock but they got a lifeline when Danilo slid in to convert an enticing cross from Meghoma. Gassama's angled-drive skipped inches past the far post before Mohamed Diomande and Danilo were replaced by Hamza Igamane and Thelo Aasgaard. Gassama had the ball in the Brugge net in the 78th minute but French referee Francois Letexier was asked by VAR to check his pitchside monitor and quickly decided that Mignolet had the ball in his hand before it was bundled into the net. The Light Blues' second-half display was heartening but it was a chastening first 20 minutes which keeps the spotlight on Martin.
