PUCM Strengthens Malaysia-China Ties Through Trade, Technology And Cultural Exchange

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- The China Entrepreneurs Association in Malaysia (PUCM) continues to play a pivotal role in deepening Malaysia and China relations, not only by fostering robust business partnerships, but also by advancing tourism, technology and cultural diplomacy.
Speaking at PUCM's 10th anniversary celebration today, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching praised the association's decade-long efforts in forging lasting connections across key sectors such as technology, telecommunications, culture and education.
'Beyond trade and investment, people-to-people ties between our nations continue to deepen. With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 on the horizon, we look forward to welcoming even more tourists from China and around the world,' she said.
Teo highlighted that tourist arrivals from China soared to 3.7 million in 2024, marking a remarkable 130.9 per cent year-on-year increase.
'This initiative marks a new chapter in Malaysia-China relations, reinforcing our connectivity in trade, tourism, education and cultural diplomacy. It arrives at a crucial moment as Malaysia chairs ASEAN in 2025, where inclusivity and sustainability will shape the regional agenda.
'Greater ease of movement for businesses, entrepreneurs, students and tourists will not only strengthen bilateral ties but also enhance ASEAN's position as a vibrant, people-centred and future-ready region,' she said during the anniversary luncheon held at a hotel here today.
Teo also reaffirmed the Communications Ministry's commitment to nurturing a supportive ecosystem for foreign and local investors in the digital and telecommunications sectors.
'We continue to review and streamline regulatory frameworks, while formulating policies that encourage a dynamic, secure and inclusive digital economy for all,' she said, encouraging PUCM and its partners to pursue joint ventures, technology exchange and investments that benefit both nations.
She also noted that the theme for the 2025 China Smart Industry Trade Exhibition (2025 CSITE), Smart Technology, Digitalisation and Education, fully aligns with the priorities of the MADANI Economy and Malaysia's drive for digital inclusivity, cybersecurity and innovation-led growth.

US-China trade talks to resume in seven days: White House
WASHINGTON: Trade negotiations between US and Chinese officials are expected to resume within seven days, following a phone call between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping. The discussions will place particular emphasis on rare earth minerals, White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro confirmed on Friday. "We expect that a meeting will take place within seven days," Navarro told reporters at the White House, commenting on the timeline of the next round of trade talks. Navarro stated that Trump has been clear that "the rare earth issue will be key to that negotiation", as reported by Sputnik/RIA Novosti. The US delegation will include Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, according to Navarro. The advisor also mentioned that Thursday's call between Trump and Xi lasted approximately 90 minutes, during which both leaders demonstrated "a very clear understanding" of the expected outcomes of the upcoming discussions. Trump later shared on Truth Social that he had discussed "some of the intricacies" of the US-China trade deal with President Xi. He also announced that he had accepted Xi's invitation to visit China and extended a reciprocal invitation. Following high-level trade and economic talks in Geneva earlier in May, Washington and Beijing agreed to lower reciprocal tariffs by 115 percentage points each for 90 days. The US has reduced tariffs on Chinese goods from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, while China has cut tariffs on American imports from 125 per cent to 10 per cent. MCMC Clarifies Mobile Phone Data Collection Amid Media Reports, Ensures Privacy
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has clarified its collection of mobile phone data (MPD) from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), assuring that no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is accessed, processed, or disclosed. The clarification comes amid recent media reports regarding the matter. In a statement today, MCMC said MPD was used strictly for the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key domains, namely the ICT Sector and the Tourism Sector. For the ICT Sector, MPD helps produce granular statistics, such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates at the state, district, mukim, parliamentary constituency, state legislative assembly (DUN), and local authority levels. For the Tourism Sector, it generates indicators such as the number of visitors and domestic tourism trips. 'The MPD data requested from MNOs is anonymised and contains no PII. 'In addition, MNOs are given the option to either process the MPD data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to MCMC, or, for MNOs without in-house processing capabilities, to submit the anonymised data to MCMC for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' it said. MCMC further clarified that the use of MPD as a new source of national statistics was a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes. Implementation of MPD is through collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science, it added. Over the past two years, MCMC said extensive engagement with all MNOs had been carried out to ensure mutual understanding of the data requirements, processes, and privacy safeguards.
