When do the Proteas return to South Africa?

This past weekend, the Proteas secured the ICC World Test Championship at Lord's, famously defeating Australia by five wickets on day four of the final.
It ended a 27-year wait for ICC success, as this was the first senior Men's trophy since the 1998 ICC Knockout victory.
There were tears and cheers as South Africa ended decades of heartache in ICC 'finals', while it was also an eighth consecutive Test victory for Bavuma and his team, notched on four different continents.
Considering the weight of this achievement, there is no doubt that hundreds of fans will want to ensure there is an especially warm welcome for the team upon their return to South Africa.
It's been confirmed that South Africa will arrive back at OR Tambo International on Wednesday at around 09:25 (SA time).
'The next time we see Shukri and his team, we will welcome them as the ICC World Test Champions!' CSA Director of National Teams and High Performance Enoch Nkwe declared.
Before that welcome, the team may well have to pass through O.R Tambo International Airport customs, so that they can declare a rather significant piece of international history that they are bringing back into the country.
'This moment is a reminder that no dream is too distant, no challenge insurmountable and no legacy too heavy to carry forward,' Nkwe added.
'I commend the unwavering commitment demonstrated by each player, both on and off the field. Reaching this milestone, coupled with remarkable key performances, will undoubtedly be etched into the history books,' Nkwe added.

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma exited to see what 'big talker' Dewald Brevis can bring to ODI's

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma and his Australian counterpart Mitchell Marsh pose ahead of the three-match ODI series, starting in Cairns on Tuesday. Picture: AFP Image: AFP THE Proteas have reverted from their customary playing XI reveal on the eve of the match, but all signs point to Dewald Brevis being handed an ODI debut against Australia in the series opener in Cairns on Tuesday. Brevis was the Proteas' standout performer during the preceding T20I's with the 22-year-old enjoying a breakout international series. The youngster smashed a 41-ball century in Darwin and a half-century in Cairns and has everyone Down Under salivating at his clean-ball striking. Captain Temba Bavuma was keen to see Brevis transfer this form to the longer white-ball format. 'I think it's always exciting when you see the young faces,' Bavuma said at the pre-match media engagement. 'Obviously, the big talker guy like Brevis, you know, putting up his hand and showing what he's what he's capable of. 'So, again, excited to see what he can also bring within the one-day stuff and all the other guys.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Bavuma hasn't played since the glorious day on June 14 at Lord's when he led the Proteas to the World Test Championship final success at Lord's. The skipper, of course, sustained a hamstring injury during his second innings heroics and missed the subsequent Test tour of Zimbabwe. The 35-year-old, though, was inundated with various media and sponsor obligations upon the Proteas' return, which included a visit to his childhood neighbourhood Langa in Cape Town to present the golden WTC mace to his hometown. He feels this has refreshed not only the body, but also the mind ahead of resumption of battles with Australia. 'Yeah, it's been a bit busy back home,' Bavuma said. 'Kind of just getting accustomed, I guess, to all the appreciation and how, I guess, things have been a bit different. 'Also had some time to just be away from the game, get the body strong again. It feels good. I guess it's a case of just keep looking after it a lot more rehab than I usually do. 'Always good to be in Australia again. Yeah, quite looking forward to the next couple of days. raring to go, looking forward to the games ahead. Everything feels good.' An in-form youngster has been added to South Africa's squad ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia 🙌 Details 👇 — ICC (@ICC) August 18, 2025

Aiden is a couple of games away from unlocking that state of genius, says Proteas coach Shukri Conrad

Markram's form in the longer white-ball format does not inspire much confidence either. The right-hander has only two half-centuries in his last 16 ODI innings dating back to the 2023 World Cup, averaging just 31.81 during this period. In fact, his last T20I half-century was at the previous T20 World Cup back in October 2022 against India in Perth. He has walked to crease 31 times since without passing 50. It would be easy to brush Markram's poor return by the way side had it been a once-off. But the 30-year-old has been searching for form since before last year's T20 World Cup when he led the Proteas to a first-ever final. Markram endured a lean T20I series, which the Aussies won 2-1 off the penultimate ball of the decider in Cairns on Saturday evening. The skipper's contribution across the three matches was a paltry 31 runs at an average of 10.30. PROTEAS coach Shukri Conrad has backed Aiden Markram to rediscover his form in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. But Conrad feels that Markram is not far from his best form, citing the recent World Test Championship final where the vice-captain delivered arguably the most important innings in Proteas' history when he struck 136 to lead his team to a famous victory at Lord's. 'I mean, I know it's a different format. But the Test Final not so long ago, Aiden showed exactly what he's about,' Conrad said. 'And I'm sure it's, I mean, a couple of games away from unlocking that state of genius.' Furthermore, Conrad wanted the team to embrace the Proteas' style of play regardless of format. 'The intensity with which you play, I don't think that changes at all,' he said. 'I just think that sometimes we can be too humble. We don't show off enough to the world enough what we're capable of doing. 'A bit like (Dewald) Brevis. And this has got nothing to do with the way Australia plays. 'But they've got a blueprint as to how they want to play. There are times when it looks absolutely brilliant and it's box office stuff. And there are times where you can have them in trouble like we had them in the first couple of games. But they stay true to it. 'What does it mean for us? I think guys like, and especially in the batting front, it's easier on the batting front, guys like (Tristan) Stubbs and (Ryan Rickelton) Ricks and these guys, Aiden himself. There's so much that they can do. But I feel that they've maybe boxed themselves in a little bit too much. 'It's not always going to result in winning. But, yeah, I just want us to show off a bit more.' The Proteas will face Australia in the first ODI on Tuesday (6:30am start).

Proteas set T20 ambitions aside as focus shifts to ODI series against Australia

The first of three ODI matches between SA and Australia will be played in Cairns on Tuesday. While the main focus over the next six months will be on the T20 format, South Africa's three-match ODI series against Australia beginning on Tuesday will give head coach Shukri Conrad a chance to start building his squad for the next 50-over World Cup, according to spin bowler Keshav Maharaj. The Proteas have played two T20 series since Conrad took over as national limited overs coach earlier this year, including a narrow 2-1 defeat to hosts Australia in a three-match campaign which concluded at the weekend. And though the next T20 World Cup is in India and Sri Lanka early next year, and the next 50-over World Cup is only in 2027, Maharaj felt Conrad's first ODI series in charge of the Proteas would be useful for the new coach to start looking ahead. 'It's an opportunity to try combinations so that probably by next year, I would assume, you'll have a better and clearer understanding of the 2027 landscape towards a squad,' Maharaj said on Sunday. 'It's a wonderful opportunity. I think it's always nice playing three formats of the game because it also tests how you adapt, and I think in World Cup events where you're faced with different conditions it sort of negates the inability to adapt at times. 'I also think it's an opportunity for Shuks (Conrad) to identify the combinations and style of cricket he wants to play.' Maharaj retains T20 ambitions Despite missing out on the T20 series which concluded in Cairns on Saturday, with Australia clinching a thrilling two-wicket victory to wrap up the series win, Maharaj said he still had ambitions to compete in next year's T20 World Cup. Asked if he had considered retiring from the shortest format of the game, the 35-year-old spin bowler said he was still committed to the Proteas in all three formats. 'The T20 World Cup in 2026 is a huge one for me… so for now I'm happy to play all three formats,' he said. 'I still love bowling, and until that passion falls away I'll probably consider something like that, but for now I want to play all three formats for my country and be a match winner.' After the first ODI between SA and Australia in Cairns on Tuesday, the second and third matches of the series will be played in Mackay on Friday and Sunday.
