Paul Blackburn joins Yankees after Mets release; check details
The New York Yankees have strengthened their pitching staff by signing right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn to a Major League contract. Notably, Blackburn has been added to the Yankees' active roster just days after his release from the New York Mets. This strategic acquisition, announced ahead of their four-game series against the Boston Red Sox starting Thursday (August 21) provides Blackburn with a fresh opportunity to showcase his skills. Paul Blackburn has faced a challenging 2024 season. After starting the year on the injured list with right knee inflammation, he didn't pitch until June 2. Traded to the Mets from the Oakland Athletics at the 2024 trade deadline, Blackburn struggled, posting a 1-5 record with a 6.00 ERA in 12 games (nine starts). His time with the Mets ended when the 31-year-old was designated for assignment on August 16 to clear a roster spot for prospect Nolan McLean, and he was released on August 19. Despite these setbacks, the Yankees see potential in the veteran pitcher. To make room for Blackburn, the Yankees optioned right-hander Allan Winans to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. This move highlights their focus on adding depth to their pitching staff as they navigate a critical phase of the season. Blackburn's ability to serve as both a starter and reliever offers flexibility, allowing manager Aaron Boone to adapt to various game situations. With a career 4.96 ERA over 452.0 innings and 347 strikeouts across nine MLB seasons, Blackburn is expected to bring valuable experience to the team. Originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round (56th overall) of the 2012 MLB Draft, Blackburn's career has seen multiple transitions. Traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2016 and later to the Oakland Athletics that same year, he earned American League All-Star honours in 2022 with the Athletics. Over his career, he has a 22-31 record with one save in 93 games (86 starts). His recent 0-3 record and 6.85 ERA in seven games with the Mets highlight the challenges he has faced, but his All-Star pedigree suggests he could rebound in the right environment. For Paul Blackburn, this signing offers a chance to reset and contribute to a contending team. With the postseason looming, his performance could play a key role in the Yankees' pursuit of a World Series title in 2025.

NBA trade rumors: Is Malik Monk leaving the Sacramento Kings? Team reportedly exploring trade to open roster spot
Malik Monk is a Sacramento Kings player (Image via Instagram / @ahmad_monk) Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal recently reported that the Sacramento Kings are actively trying to trade guard Malik Monk to make room on the roster for Russell Westbrook, a former NBA MVP and current free agent. They are "trying very hard" to trade the guard this offseason, but they haven't found a partner yet, according to an NBA source. Sacramento intends to sign Russell Westbrook and deploy him as the team's sixth man behind Dennis Schroder, who was just added, according to the same report. Is Russell Westbrook joining The Sacramento Kings ? NBA all set to pursue ex- Denver Nuggets guard There have long been rumors that Russell Westbrook would end up with the Sacramento Kings. However, Russ is still a free agent two months into his free agency, despite their interest. Now, the Kings are reportedly actively working to clear a roster slot in order to sign Russell Westbrook. According to a recent rumor, the Kings intend to let go of Malik Monk, a player they attempted to include in negotiations for Jonathan Kuminga with the Golden State Warriors. According to the Dallas Hoops Journal, they are "trying very hard" to trade him, but they need to find someone willing to accept his money. Sacramento is willing to offer Russ a contract if they can cut Malik Monk's salary and free up a roster spot. Announcing the news, Grant Afseth said: 'The Sacramento Kings have been 'trying very hard' to trade Malik Monk this offseason, but they haven't found a taker, an NBA source told Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal… The Kings have been trying to trade Monk to open up a spot for Russell Westbrook, who is an unrestricted free agent. Sacramento wants to sign Westbrook and bring the former NBA MVP off the bench as its sixth man behind Dennis Schröder.' Does Malik Monk carry trade value? With a trade value of 17.93, Malik Monk is ranked 100th overall and 23rd among shooting guards. In the last sixty days, his highest trade value has been 17.93. He was second for a Sixth Month of the Year Award two seasons ago. He started 45 of the 65 games he played in the previous season, which disqualified him. He has, however, shown himself to be a useful off-field player. Malik Monk in action (Image via NBA) His pay is actually the greater issue here. In addition to the two remaining guaranteed years on his contract, he has a $21.5 million player option for the 2027-2028 campaign. He is therefore difficult to swap. Few teams are prepared to accept a wage that may be extended by three more years. In order to find a team willing to pay his salary, the Kings may need to add a second-round pick due to his contract.
