Private sector lending rises 10.1% in Q1 2025 as inflation eases: CBE
The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has announced that local currency loans to the private sector grew by an average of 10.1% in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, a sharp turnaround from the -8.7% contraction recorded during the same period in 2024. In a recent report, the CBE attributed this rebound primarily to stronger demand from private businesses, supported by a significant decline in the annual headline inflation rate in February 2025. The Bank noted that these developments signal a recovery in real economic activity across the private sector, a trend expected to continue in the coming months. On the monetary side, the CBE projects a slowdown in the growth of local liquidity, expecting it to ease to 23.2% by the end of June 2025—down from 28.7% a year earlier. Liquidity growth is forecast to stabilise at 22.8% by the end of June 2026. This anticipated deceleration reflects the diminishing impact of the March 2024 exchange rate unification, which had previously triggered a surge in the banking sector's net foreign assets and created a strong base effect beginning in March 2025. Looking ahead, the Central Bank expects headline inflation to average between 14% and 15% in 2025 and decline further to a range of 10% to 12.5% in 2026. This compares to an average of around 28.4% in 2024. While inflation is projected to continue falling throughout 2025 and 2026, the CBE cautions that the pace of decline will moderate following the sharp drop observed in early 2025. This more gradual disinflation is attributed to ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts and the slower retreat in non-food commodity prices. The Bank reiterated its commitment to achieving its inflation target of 7% (± 2%) by the fourth quarter of 2026. It affirmed that current monetary conditions remain appropriate to support this path, adding that it will maintain a positive real interest rate to help secure a sustained decline in core inflation and anchor inflation expectations. In a separate update, the CBE disclosed that the net foreign assets (NFAs) of the banking system—which includes both the Central Bank and commercial banks—turned positive as of May 2024, reaching a surplus of $15.1bn by March 2025. This improvement was largely driven by inflows from the Ras El-Hekma deal and renewed foreign investment in Egyptian debt instruments, buoyed by increased investor confidence following the exchange rate unification. Additional support came from a recovery in remittances from Egyptians abroad and continued backing from international financial institutions.

Egypt Welcomes Election of Sidi Ould Tah as African Development Bank President
H-Tayea Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation of Egypt, extended her warm congratulations to H.E. Dr. Sidi Ould Tah on his election as the new President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group. The election took place during the Bank's Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, marking the beginning of Dr. Ould Tah's five-year term at the helm of Africa's premier development finance institution. The Minister welcomed the appointment, describing it as timely and significant for the continent. 'We wish the AfDB President success in supporting Africa's development journey, which is undergoing a crucial phase,' she stated. Dr. Ould Tah, a seasoned Mauritanian economist with over 35 years of experience in African and international finance, was elected by the Bank's Board of Governors — comprising Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors from the AfDB's 81 regional and non-regional member countries. H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized that Dr. Ould Tah assumes leadership of the Bank at a time of mounting challenges for Africa, including the ongoing impacts of climate change, global economic volatility, and the growing pressures on multilateralism amid protectionist global trade trends. She expressed full confidence in his ability to steer the Bank forward and contribute to the realization of the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Highlighting his decade-long leadership of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Dr. Al-Mashat noted the significant achievements under Dr. Ould Tah's tenure. These included quadrupling BADEA's balance sheet, achieving top-tier credit ratings — including an Aa1 rating from Moody's and AAA from Japan's JCR — and advancing strategic development initiatives in food security, energy transition, and infrastructure. The Minister also voiced Egypt's commitment to deepening its partnership with the African Development Bank Group in the coming period. 'We look forward to strengthening cooperation with the AfDB to support our national development priorities and to empower the private sector, especially as we focus on resilience and sustainable growth,' she said. In her remarks, Dr. Al-Mashat extended appreciation to outgoing President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina for his decade of service (2015–2025), during which the AfDB significantly expanded its footprint across Africa, including deepening collaboration with Egypt on infrastructure, energy, and policy support. The African Development Bank Group consists of three entities: the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Development Fund (ADF), and the Nigeria Trust Fund (NTF). The Group comprises 81 member countries, including 54 African regional and 27 non-regional member states. With this new chapter under Dr. Ould Tah's leadership, Egypt reaffirms its commitment to supporting Africa's development vision and enhancing its active role in international financial cooperation frameworks. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Facility to drive infrastructure growth and diversify capital access for Türkiye's leading digital operator Strategic deal reflects DIB's expanding role in financing real economies and enabling digital expansion Partnership aligns with DIB's mission to advance sustainable impact through Sharia-compliant financ Dubai, UAE –May 2025: DIB, the world's first Islamic bank and the largest in the UAE, has signed a USD 150 million Murabaha financing agreement with Turkcell, Türkiye's leading telecommunications and technology services provider. The facility will support Turkcell's ongoing investments in digital infrastructure and further reinforces DIB's commitment to enabling growth in high-potential markets. As one of the most prominent Islamic financial institutions in the GCC, the Bank continues to foster cross-border partnerships that drive sustainable, innovation-led development. Structured as a five-year bullet-term facility, the Sharia-compliant financing will enable Turkcell to advance critical infrastructure in areas such as data centres, cloud technologies, and renewable energy—further solidifying Turkcell's role as a leading force in Türkiye's evolving digital economy. Dr. Adnan Chilwan, Group Chief Executive Officer of DIB, commented: 'At DIB, we have long believed that banking goes beyond funding, we drive transformation. This partnership with Turkcell is not merely about leveraging our balance sheet; it is about enabling the organisation to unleash its true potential. Türkiye represents a market with vision, scale, and ambition, an economy investing heavily in the infrastructure of tomorrow, and a natural partner in our cross-border strategy.' Dr. Chilwan added: 'As the UAE's largest Islamic bank, our role increasingly lies in establishing and shaping meaningful connections between geographies, sectors, and the players within. We see Islamic finance as a bridge, one that supports real economies while remaining true to the principles of ethical finance. With this facility, we are supporting a business that understands the future: digital, decentralised, and inclusive essentially, a future that DIB fully believes in.' The deal also strengthens financial and commercial connectivity between the UAE and Türkiye, while offering Turkcell increased access to Islamic financial mechanisms and structures—particularly as it accelerates investment into strategic and sustainability-linked technologies. Dr. Ali Taha Koç, Chief Executive Officer of Turkcell, said: 'As Türkiye advances towards a more digital and data-driven economy, our focus remains on building the infrastructure that supports this evolution. Partnering with a trusted institution like DIB, with its strong regional presence and deep-rooted values, brings both credibility and strategic alignment. This facility is not just timely— it lays a strong foundation for our growth journey in the years ahead.' The agreement was formalised at a high-level signing ceremony in Istanbul, attended by senior leadership from both organisations, led by Dr. Adnan Chilwan and Dr. Ali Taha Koç.
