Former crew chief for Denny Hamlin takes on unique role with Ty Gibbs' team

NBC Sports15 hours ago

HAMPTON, Ga. — Half a season after his promotion from being Denny Hamlin's crew chief to competition director at Joe Gibbs Racing, Chris Gabehart was back atop a pit box Saturday night at Atlanta.
But he wasn't working with Hamlin.
Gabehart, who won 22 Cup races with Hamlin from 2019-24, served as the race strategist for Ty Gibbs at Atlanta. That meant talking to Gibbs on the radio and orchestrating strategy with crew chief Tyler Allen.
'Let's call it unorthodox for this garage,' Gabehart told NBC Sports about the added duties he will have for an undetermined amount of time. 'But the reality is that once (Joe Gibbs Racing) got three cars in the playoffs, when you look at it simply, we've got one left we're trying to get in.'
Gibbs has had some opportunities to win recently.
He placed third at Michigan three weeks ago. He left the race frustrated with how much fuel he had to save at the end and wasn't able to challenge Hamlin, who also saved fuel but won.
When Gibbs complained on the radio to Allen about giving that race away, Gabehart jumped on the team's channel and said: 'Hey, we didn't give (anything) away. We had a great day. We did what we needed to do. We got a top five. Our other car won. It's about big picture. All right? Take this and build.'
Dustin Long,
Gibbs was the main challenger to winner Shane van Gisbergen the following week at Mexico. That race turned when a caution came out at Lap 66, three laps after van Gisbergen pitted. Gibbs had yet to make his final stop. Pitting under that caution dropped Gibbs from the lead to 13th, behind those who had stopped under green.
Allen, in his second year as a crew chief and first in the Cup Series, told NBC Sports after the Mexico race that he felt he needed to stay out longer to have a tire advantage against van Gisbergen in the final laps.
'It's super risky at a road course,' Allen said after that race about staying out longer. 'If that caution doesn't come, we have a really good shot to win. Unfortunately, it did and buried us back in about 15th and that was about all we could do.'
Gibbs couldn't get through the field and finished 11th that day.
At Pocono, Gibbs finished 14th. He pitted five times in the race. Eight of the cars ahead of him pitted four or fewer times in that race.
Gibbs finished 14th on Saturday night. While he led 32 laps, he scored no stage points and fell a spot in the season standings to 24th.
'Tyler and his team has been doing a great job,' Gabehart said after Saturday night's race at Atlanta. 'They were a stone's throw away from winning at Michigan. They were a caution away from contending for the win at Mexico. (Pocono), golly, strategies upside down and (Atlanta strategy was) upside down.
'Really, three out of the last four weeks we've been at least within shouting distance of a win with this car. It's nothing about the job that this team has been doing. It's taking all your resources that are available to you and trying to get the last car in the playoffs.'
Gibbs is 86 points from the playoff cutline with eight races left in the regular season. He all but needs to win to make the playoffs.
While being a strategist for the team, a key for Gabehart is to have that direct communication on the radio with Gibbs during a race. Also, as strategies change, he can quickly make a call instead of relaying it to Allen or someone else to tell Gibbs.
'The margin for winning and not winning in this sport is as tight as it's ever been,' Gabehart said of talking on the radio to Gibbs as opposed to the crew chief. 'It's the smallest of things. One reason might be some instance that I can get through to (Gibbs) or a decision I made on the fly that may not be clear at first but results in an opportunity to win. That's a nuance. Another nuance is Ty knows my history and resume, so maybe he'll respond to that in a little bit different way.
'Another nuance is the tremendous opportunity, and I can speak this because I've lived this for the last half a year, that being able to zoom out just half a beat and look at your race team from just a little bit zoomed out perspective like Tyler is now getting to do, there's a lot to see and learn from there, watching someone like myself do it vs. being in (it) yourself either as a crew chief, as he's been for the last year and a half, or as an engineer.
'I think the truth is you can learn something from anything and you never know what might make the difference.'
Nate Ryan,
With Gabehart more focused on trying to Gibbs in the playoffs, how does Gabehart not let that impact what he does for the organization's other three teams, which are trying to score as many playoff points before the regular season ends?
'That's ultimately up for me to manage,' Gabehart said. 'The decision was made to spread me a little thinner … so that's what we'll do.'
With it less than a season since Gabehart last served as a crew chief, the abilities he honed atop the pit box remain fresh.
Alan Gustafson, crew chief for Atlanta winner Chase Elliott, says that he knows that Gabehart will make a positive impact on Gibbs and the team for however long he remains in the strategist role.
'I have a lot of respect for Christ, I've raced with Chris for a long time,' Gustafson said. 'There's guys that you work with in this garage that do things the right way and race really hard and give you everything they've got and are fair and respectful. Chris is one of those guys. … He's really good at what he does.'

Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Malaika Mihambo has the world's top jump in 2025 (indoors or outdoors) of 7.07 meters, just two centimeters ahead of Davis-Woodhall's best. Davis-Woodhall is undefeated since the start of 2024, winning all 12 of her competitions. Men's 100m (4:12 p.m.) Last Friday, Olympic silver medalist Kishane Thompson won the Jamaican title in 9.75 seconds — the world's fastest time in 10 years — to become the sixth-fastest man in history. Thompson then said he wouldn't be surprised if he broke the world record. While Usain Bolt's 9.58 is still a ways off, Thompson is now one hundredth behind the fifth-fastest man in history (Justin Gatlin) and three hundredths behind the fourth-fastest man (Asafa Powell). At Pre, Thompson lines up against American Trayvon Bromell, whose 9.84 was the world's best time this year until last Friday. Women's 400m (4:51 p.m.) Once again, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is on American record watch. She ran 48.74 in 2023 and 48.75 in 2024, which are the second- and third-best times in U.S. history behind Sanya Richards-Ross' 48.70 from 2006. McLaughlin-Levrone said last month that she plans to race either the flat 400m or the 400m hurdles at the USATF Outdoor Championships in a bid to qualify for worlds in one individual event. She has broken the 400m hurdles world record six times, but has never raced the flat 400m at a global championship. The Pre field includes two Americans who have been faster than McLaughlin-Levrone in 2025: Aaliyah Butler and Bella Whittaker. Women's 800m (5:34 p.m.) Eyes will be on Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu-Nikolayev. In her last top-level 800m, she fell about 200 meters into the 2024 Olympic Trials final and ended up ninth. She was coming back from tearing a hamstring about six weeks before trials. So far in 2025, she has run two low-key 1500m races. Here, the competition ramps up with 2024 Olympic silver and bronze medalists Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia and Mary Moraa of Kenya. Women's 100m (5:44 p.m.) Field features the three medalists from Paris: Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, plus training partners Sha'Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. In 2025, the world's fastest women are the Olympic bronze medalist Jefferson-Wooden (10.73) and the gold medalist Alfred (10.75). Richardson has raced once this year -- 11.47 on May 18. She has a bye into worlds as the reigning world champion from 2023, meaning she doesn't need to be in top shape for USATF Outdoors. Also watch out for 20-year-old Jamaican twins Tina and Tia Clayton, who ran 10.81 and 10.86 at their national championships last Friday. Nick Zaccardi,

Eagles insider offers a bold Nolan Smith prediction for 2025

Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia predicts a breakout season for star pass rusher Nolan Smith, and 10-12 sacks should be achievable. By now, you've watched enough football to know the Philadelphia Eagles are a big deal. There are 9,000 podcasts that talk about this team daily. Add that to another 1,000 or so written platforms, and it becomes even more challenging to keep up with the exorbitant amounts of information released about this team within 24 hours. Here's some advice if you haven't figured it out already. NBC Sports' Reuben Frank should be among your necessary views and a part of your listening schedule. His column, Roob's Observations, consistently delivers a wealth of information and numerous statistics. One stat in particular caught our attention. He's said this before, but did anyone else notice his projected sack total for Nolan Smith in 2025? Hopefully, Reuben Frank is right about this one. Can you imagine if he is? One of the more overblown aspects of Nolan Smith's rookie season was that he was a major disappointment, with his 'slow start' not instilling confidence. Those theories left a lot to be desired. They also leave a lot out of his story: He faced early injuries and sat behind Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, and Haason Reddick on the depth chart. Additionally, he had to work with Sean Desai and Matt Patricia as the Eagles' top defensive coaches. With Reddick, Desai, and Patricia no longer with the team, Vic Fangio took over last season. With increased playing time, we finally saw the performance from Smith that we had anticipated, albeit a year later than expected. Smith started ten of his 16 in-game appearances. He racked up 42 total tackles, including eight that resulted in a loss of yardage. He tallied 6.5 sacks and an additional 11 quarterback hits. He carried that momentum into the postseason, tallying four sacks and four tackles resulting in a loss of yardage. He led all postseason performers in both categories. Reuben Frank is calling for somewhere between 12 to 14 sacks. He explained why recently with the usual pinpoint analysis. "We've been talking all offseason about how Nolan Smith really found himself as a pass rusher last year with 10 ½ sacks from Week 6 on... But let's not forget that Smith is one hell of a run defender as well. Just like his mentor, Brandon Graham, he may be undersized, but his effort against the run is exceptional. Out of 72 edge rushers who played at least 500 snaps last year, Smith's 74.0 Pro Football Focus run defense grade ranked 13th, which is outstanding. (Many) edge rushers aren't interested in playing the run because stopping the run doesn't get you paid. Sacks do, but Smith is committed to being an all-around player. You worry about a guy 245 or 250 selling out against the run, especially as aggressive as Smith is, but you also don't want to see a guy like Smith change the way he plays. How do you not love the constant intense effort both rushing the passer and playing the run?" Honestly, we hope this prediction comes true because we're rooting for Nolan. If he succeeds, he will be the talk of Philadelphia. In fact, he could even run for mayor! He definitely won't have to pay for a meal for the next three summers—unless he wants to.

Ty Dillon — Finished a season-best eighth and provided the biggest upset of the In-Season Challenge. As the No. 32 seed, he eliminated No. 1 seed Denny Hamlin and said on TNT after the race: 'All you Denny fans out there, I just knocked your favorite driver out.' LOSERS Ryan Blaney — Collected in the big crash and finished last in the 40-car field. It is his sixth DNF of the season, tying him with Bubba Wallace for most in the season. Bubba Wallace — Finished 22nd and fell in the standings. He holds the final playoff spot with eight races left in the regular season. He leads Ryan Preece by 23 points.
