Palma de Mallorca airport horror as man stabbed in neck 'for no reason'

Daily Record20-05-2025
The horror attack - seemingly carried out without motive - happened today and was witnessed by passengers.
An airport popular with Scots holidaymakers has descended into panic after a man was stabbed in the neck without an apparent motive in front of stunned passengers.
A man in his 20s was stabbed as he waited for his friend to arrive in Palma de Mallorca via the island's Son Sant Joan airport this evening, Spanish police have said.

The attack is the second to take place on the island in less than a week and is being described as a brutal assault without motive, reports the Mirror.

Police said a man, with a companion, had gone to Son Sant Joan airport to pick up a friend who was flying into the island when he was approached by an individual who started to ask him something about his phone.
However, as he struggled to make out what he was saying, the man suddenly and without warning pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the neck.
While the victim was treated at the scene by an ambulance from SAMU 061, the perpetrator was arrested shortly after the shock attack while still inside the airport, according to local reports. He was stabilised by medics and later transferred to a hospital to receive specialised medical attention.
At the moment, no further details have been provided about his state of health, but his life is not thought to be in danger. The incident caused shock and some panic among other people in the terminal building.

Police have opened an investigation and the man is due to appear before a court tomorrow, with additional reports suggesting attacker and victim were not known to one another. Local people have expressed their concern about the stabbing too and what they see as increasing crime in Mallorca.
One person posted: "The place is becoming a joke. Broad daylight at Palma airport. If this isn't a wake up call, i dint know what will be." The distressing incident came following an attempted stabbing last weekend during which a knifeman was shot by police.

Officers with Spain's National Police had shot down an unnamed individual after he allegedly tried to rob a taxi driver at knifepoint in the vicinity of Gran Canaria Airport at around 4.50pm on Sunday. The suspect, a man, is believed to have pounced on the officers with the weapon, forcing them to repel the attack by force.
Emergency services within the airport and from the Canary Islands Health Service immediately raced to the scene, The Canary News reported, with police forced to open fire after the man with a "large knife" pounced on an officer who fell down.
A colleague of the targeted officer then shot the knifeman multiple times, with medics later confirming he died at the scene despite their best efforts.
The man's body remained on site for more than an hour as forensic and judicial teams documented the scene, with police set to review CCTV as part of a full investigation and judicial review.

Germany train derailment kills at least three leaving others seriously injured

Authorities confirmed approximately 100 passengers were on the train when at least two carriages left the tracks in Biberach, Germany, with several people killed. At least three people were killed and others seriously injured when a train derailed in southern Germany, police say. ‌ Authorities said around 100 passengers were on board the RE55 regional express train when it left the tracks in the Biberach district. ‌ A large number of emergency services were deployed to the scene. Preliminary reports say the crash resulted in numerous injuries. ‌ Several people were killed in what has been described as a "mass casualty incident" by local authorities, reports the Mirror. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158km (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. In a statement shared on X, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said: "The train accident in the Biberach district deeply shocks me. ‌ "I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister, and I have asked them to support the rescue services with all available means. "We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their families." According to the German Press Agency (dpa), Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is also heading to the scene of the accident. His spokesman said he will get an impression of the rescue efforts following the derailment. ‌ A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild: "Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed." Because of the number of people killed and injured, the crash has been declared a mass casualty incident by German authorities. This typically happens when rescue services deal with an incident in which a large number of injured or sick people need to be cared for. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
