Germany train derailment kills at least three leaving others seriously injured
At least three people were killed and others seriously injured when a train derailed in southern Germany, police say.
Authorities said around 100 passengers were on board the RE55 regional express train when it left the tracks in the Biberach district.
A large number of emergency services were deployed to the scene. Preliminary reports say the crash resulted in numerous injuries.
Several people were killed in what has been described as a "mass casualty incident" by local authorities, reports the Mirror.
Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158km (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation.
It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. In a statement shared on X, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said: "The train accident in the Biberach district deeply shocks me.
"I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister, and I have asked them to support the rescue services with all available means.
"We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their families."
According to the German Press Agency (dpa), Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is also heading to the scene of the accident. His spokesman said he will get an impression of the rescue efforts following the derailment.
A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild: "Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed."
Because of the number of people killed and injured, the crash has been declared a mass casualty incident by German authorities.
This typically happens when rescue services deal with an incident in which a large number of injured or sick people need to be cared for.

Man attacked in 'attempted murder' as XL bully killed in Aberdeen incident
A 51-year-old man was raced to hospital following an attempted murder in a park in Aberdeen. Police have taped off an Aberdeen park following the attempted murder of a man and the death of an XL Bully dog. Emergency crews raced to Eric Hendrie Park on Deveron Road in Aberdeen on Sunday July 27 at around 8.30pm after officers received a report of a disturbance involving a vehicle within the park. English man reported missing from Highlands tourist site
Ronald Windle was last seen near Fort George in Ardersier near Inverness. Police are searching for a missing Englishman who disappeared near a Highland army barracks and museum. Ronald Windle, 54, has been reported missing from the Ardersier area near Inverness. He was last seen at around 2am on Saturday July 27 near Fort George - a popular tourist attraction and active army barracks, specifically used by the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland. Concern is growing among Ronald's family and friends as his current whereabouts are unknown. At the time of his disappearance, he is believed to have been wearing a black T-shirt featuring a Corvette logo and black jeans. He is described as a White English male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with thinning grey/white hair. Police note that Ronald may have been walking in the direction of Inverness and have appealed for motorists on the road at that time to share their dashcam footage. Acting Police Sergeant Stuart Mackenzie of Burnett Police Station in Inverness stated: 'Ronald has now been missing for a number of hours, and we are increasingly concerned for his welfare. "We are appealing particularly to motorists who were in the Fort George or A96 areas, and who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch. "If you saw a man matching Ronald's description walking in the direction of Inverness, please contact us. We currently have a number of police resources deployed in the area, and public assistance could be vital in helping us locate Ronald.'
