Alibaba.com Records Double-Digit Order Growth in the USA During March Expo

March Expo, Alibaba.com's flagship sourcing event, saw US SME buyers leverage AI and digital sourcing to build new supplier partnerships and unlock growth opportunities
NEW YORK, March 31, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Alibaba.com, a leading platform for global business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce, has recorded a 27% year-on-year increase* in the number of orders placed by US SME buyers during this year's March Expo.
March Expo is Alibaba.com's flagship sourcing event. It connects millions of buyers with millions of suppliers from around the world, helping them discover the latest product opportunities and build new supplier partnerships while providing attractive promotional offers. A month-long virtual event, March Expo leverages technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital sourcing to make it easier for US SMEs to access growth opportunities via global trade.
Alibaba.com's US order growth was driven by growth across several key product categories across the country, particularly sports products, which saw an increase of nearly one third (30%) year-on-year. Notably, according to Alibaba.com data, orders for pickleball-related products increased by 197%, as demand for sporting goods in the US continues its growth trajectory and there is rising interest in new and emerging sports.
In addition, the strong order growth was driven by US SMEs switching to digital sourcing — buying goods directly from suppliers, rather than intermediaries. New data from Alibaba.com‡ revealed that nearly half of SMEs (44%) plan to change suppliers this year — notably via digital sourcing channels such as online B2B marketplaces. Meanwhile, just under two thirds (59%) of US SMEs surveyed said digital sourcing is more important now compared to this time last year, demonstrating an increased preference for direct sourcing.
Kuo Zhang, President, Alibaba.com, said: "During this year's March Expo, there has been a noticeable shift in favor of digital sourcing, with order volumes amongst US SMEs rising sharply year-on-year. This trend aligns with our recent research, which revealed that US SMEs increasingly recognize the benefits of online sourcing, from affordability to trend responsiveness and supplier reliability. In addition, the rise in sports-related product purchases indicates that SME buyers are increasingly tapping into consumer trends and sourcing ready-made products. As businesses embrace digital sourcing, they gain greater flexibility and access to a wider range of products to support their growth."

‡The research was conducted by Censuswide, among a sample of 1,000 decision makers (aged 18+) in US SMEs who are responsible for sourcing in companies with under 150 employees (excluding sole traders). The data was collected between January 31, 2025 and February 6, 2025. Censuswide abides by and employs members of the Market Research Society and follows the MRS code of conduct which is based on the ESOMAR principles. 'Digital sourcing' refers to sourcing products through online B2B marketplaces. 'More important' refers to 'Much more important' and 'More important' responses combined.

The future of transit isn't flashy, it's functional

When it comes to the future of urban mobility, it's not the sci-fi fantasies that will shape our cities. It's functional solutions for the everyday. While tech visionaries promote high-speed concepts like ET3's vacuum-sealed capsules, true transformation will come from transportation solutions that are accessible, reliable, and affordable—like modernizing existing transit infrastructure, digitizing bus routes, and reducing traffic congestion. Sexy, futuristic modes of transportation like autonomous vehicles may dominate the headlines, but what Americans really crave are reliable, inexpensive options to get them from point A to point B—not a self-driving car. Public frustration around the future of transit is mounting. Waymos are crashing in Los Angeles, congestion pricing is contentious in New York City, and the U.S. lacks a reliable high-speed rail network. These realities make it clear that companies should rethink what the 'city of the future' looks like and reprioritize achievable solutions to real needs. New data from Censuswide, commissioned by Diffusion, offers a closer look at the evolving sentiment on mobility in America's biggest cities—and the findings highlight a pressing need for better solutions. Alarmingly, fewer than 18% of Americans describe their city's transit as 'highly efficient' and nearly as many say it's 'struggling.' With American people driving around twice as much annually compared to their European counterparts, the overreliance on personal vehicles underscores the urgency for investments in reliable public transit that can reduce congestion, cut emissions and improve quality of life. While exciting, the novelty of new mobility tech, like the 2,000 new food delivery bots roaming around Los Angeles, wears off quickly when residents can depend more on their takeout delivery than the bus they take to work. In fact, bus delays are collectively costing L.A. residents more than a cumulative decade on the average weekday. Despite the ability to ask ChatGPT nearly any question and get the answer in seconds, Americans are understandably frustrated that they can't seem to get an accurate transit schedule. Back to the basics The top three priorities for Americans when it comes to urban mobility are affordability (50.8%), reliable public transit (47%), and accessibility (39.3%)— demonstrating a need for options that reduce traffic congestion, provide economical alternatives, and are available to all. Visionaries in the urban mobility space need to focus on these core components before setting their sights on mass adoption. Without demonstrating a positive potential impact on cost, convenience, reliability, and ease of use, companies innovating in the space will only continue to be met with skepticism and resistance. Fears around AV Sentiment around automated vehicles (AVs), for example, perfectly illustrates the increasing skepticism and resistance to adapt. Despite AVs being at the forefront of the future and modern urban transit conversation, the public isn't on board, with over half (50.5%) of respondents disagreeing that AV's are the 'future.' Furthermore, 74.5% of Americans said they don't trust the safety of AVs and 66% said that the technology isn't ready. Yet just this month, Waymo announced they are expanding to New York City. This move suggests that companies in the urban mobility space may be out of touch with what American commuters are ready to embrace. AVs still don't feel normal or comfortable to most, so now is the time to build trust. Rolling them out at scale without addressing fundamental mobility concerns risks missing the mark entirely, since commuters need confidence in the safety and reliability of the technology before they'll consider taking the risk themselves. Beyond issues of trust and comfort, however, concerns extend to the broader economic impact of AVs. Nearly 60% said they're concerned about AVs impact on jobs, a sentiment that isn't surprising given growing fears about AI 's effects on the American workforce and the disappearance of certain roles. While businesses race to advance AV technology, assuming widespread excitement for futuristic transportation options, they often overlook how these developments will directly affect everyday people. Job loss is not the only aspect of new technology that concerns Americans—privacy remains at the forefront of conversation, with over 60% of people reporting a concern for their digital safety. Many of these 'futuristic' transport options require a certain amount of data about oneself, location, etc. which can be scary to the everyday commuter. Companies modernizing urban mobility should focus on transparency when it comes to data collection, to help ease user's minds, and highlight the ways in which their technology will tangibly improve day-to-day lives. Otherwise, they'll face resistance in the pursuit of mass acceptance. The real 'City of the Future' Since what Americans truly want isn't flying cars or futuristic cities, efforts should focus on enhancing existing infrastructure through smart technology instead of pursuing a complete overhaul. Innovations that fail to get someone to their destination quickly and affordably are far less 'transformative' than companies believe. The real future of urban mobility isn't about who has the flashiest new system, it's about who solves the real problems. 'Progress' is about improving upon how people live, work and move within cities, not making headlines for futuristic features that don't have real-world impact. Before we prioritize the 'city of the future,' let's strengthen our cities in the present.

More than half of people who acted on social media financial advice ‘lost money'

More than half of people who have acted on financial advice they came across on social media said they ended up losing money, according to a bank. Of the 31% of people who said they had acted on financial advice on social media platforms, 55% said they had lost money, the research, commissioned by TSB, found. Nine in 10 (90%) people surveyed had seen an investment opportunity on social media, and more than two-fifths (43%) would consider investing as a result. The survey also revealed that more than two-fifths (43%) of people felt worse about their finances after seeing posts about wealth on social media. Sixteen to 24-year-olds were the most likely to feel downbeat after seeing posts about wealth (67%), followed by 25 to 34-year-olds (61%), with only a fifth (22%) of over-55s saying they felt worse about their finances. More than 1,800 people who use social media were surveyed by Censuswide in June, for TSB. Surina Somal, director of everyday banking at TSB, said: 'While there could be useful sources of financial advice on social media platforms; there are also pitfalls through incorrect information and unregulated investments that could derail your finances.' She said that people should do their research to check that content is accurate, before jumping in. Information about products such as mortgages or savings accounts can be checked with banks or brokers, she added. Ms Somal also cautioned against 'get rich quick' promises and claims about unrealistic returns. Some claims could be scams. People can also check the Financial Conduct Authority's financial services register on its website for firms and the regulated activities that they have permissions for. Last month, a crackdown took place to protect social media users from rogue promotions by some financial influencers, or 'finfluencers'. The week of action started on June 2 and involved the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK as well as regulators from other countries. Many financial influencers acting legitimately and are not breaking any laws – but others may tout products or services illegally and without authorisation through online videos and posts, where they use the pretence of a lavish lifestyle, often falsely, to promote success, the FCA said in June. Steve Smart, joint executive director of enforcement and market oversight at the FCA, said in June: 'Our message to finfluencers is loud and clear. They must act responsibly and only promote financial products where they are authorised to do so – or face the consequences.' Jenny Ross, Which? Money editor, said: 'Having a large following on social media doesn't mean that someone can be trusted to give financial advice. In the worst cases, they may even be promoting scams. 'Take the time to carefully consider any financial decisions, and don't allow yourself to be pressured by what you see online – particularly when it comes to investments. However you invest, there's always a risk that you could lose money. Always keep in mind that if an opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is.'
