Bathukammakunta Lake restoration nearing completion; Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) revives forgotten water body in Amberpet
Once spread across 14 acres, the lake significantly shrank over time and was completely dry until late 2024. During a desilting and excavation drive, water was unexpectedly found a few feet below the surface, prompting further work to assess and restore the site, HYDRAA commissioner A V Ranganath has said.

While progress was temporarily stalled due to a legal dispute over ownership, a court ruling in early 2025 cleared the way for HYDRAA to resume work.
The lake bed was deepened, accumulated debris was cleared, and steps were taken to allow natural water recharge.
Residents in the area have welcomed the changes, noting the return of water and improved surroundings. For many, the site holds cultural value, especially during the Bathukamma festivities.
"We are also working on basic amenities around the lake such as walking paths, greenery, and measures to prevent sewage inflow. We aim to make the lake functional both as a water body and a community space, Ranganath added.

HYDRAA initiates ‘Basthi tho Dosti' programme
The Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has started a new initiative titled 'Basthi tho Dosti' (Friendship with Slums) to spread awareness about its activities in city slums. The first programme under this initiative was held at Toli Chowki, where HYDRAA has cleared a stretch of Bulkapur drain, removing tonnes of garbage and silt. Addressing several representatives from surrounding slums, Commissioner of HYDRAA A.V. Ranganath said that the agency has always been on the side of the common man. He urged people to counter the narratives against HYDRAA being spread by land-grabbers. The homes of the poor would never be pulled down, and if they had to be pulled down, HYDRAA would go ahead only after the residents are provided alternative housing, he added. Mr. Ranganath said that areas such as Virat Nagar and Basava Tarakam Nagar in Shaikpet and Tolichowki would get flooded due to garbage and silt accumulated over years, which included mattresses, pillows and plastic waste. CCTV cameras will be installed all along the Bulkapur drain, as a deterrent to people littering the drain. HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah said that a total of 750 slums in the city are flood prone, and HYDRAA will take up drain cleaning at all these locations.

HYDERABAD: Amrabad Tiger Reserve in Telangana, once home to only three tigers, now has a thriving population of 36 tigers. At the center of this resurgence is a tigress, Farah, also known as F6. Since giving birth to two cubs in 2019, Farah has become the undisputed matriarch of the reserve. Her bloodline now accounts for nearly half of the tigers that inhabit the tiger reserve. Known affectionately as 'SuperMomma,' Farah's contribution to the population has been extraordinary. She has littered four times in total, with her most recent birth in 2025 bringing three more cubs into the family. Conservation Through Collaboration Amrabad's success is a collaboration between forest officials and the Chenchu tribal community. Residents of the forest, these tribal members act as skilled trackers, to ensure the safety and well-being of the tigers. Their knowledge of the landscape and tiger behavior, adding to the use of modern technology. DFO Rohit Goppidi says 'Alongside human tracking , we use advanced tools like Pink Evolve, AI-driven software that monitors prey spatial density, and Tiger ID, developed by the Wildlife Institute of India, to identify and track individual tigers.' Amrabad's eco-tourism revenues have increased since the formation of Telangana which also resulted in the bifurcation of tiger reserve, benefiting the local community and providing jobs for 127 Chenchu guides and supporting the establishment of 17 local homestays.
