LONDON (AP) — Kate, the Princess of Wales, is set to present the trophy to the winner of the women's singles final at Wimbledon on Saturday after opting not to attend the match last year while she was recovering from cancer.
The All England Club said Kate, the wife of Prince William, will be back in the Royal Box on Centre Court for the match between eighth-seeded Iga Swiatek and No. 13 Amanda Anisimova. She will then take part in the on-court trophy presentation.

Kate has been the patron of the All England Club since 2016 and has regularly attended the men's and women's finals. However, she was not there when Barbora Krejcikova defeated Jasmine Paolini for the women's title last year.
She did hand the trophy to Carlos Alcaraz after his victory over Novak Djokovic in the men's final, when she made only her second public appearance since announcing she was diagnosed with cancer.
She has been gradually returning to public duties since since announcing last fall that she had completed chemotherapy, and took part in welcoming French President Emmanuel Macron during his state visit to Britain this week. ___

Group stage of women's Euro 2025 breaks attendance record

France fans cheer in the stands before the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 Group D soccer match between France and England at the Letzigrund stadium. Sebastian Gollnow/dpa The women's Euro 2025 in Switzerland continued to break records as the group stage of the tournament concluded on Sunday. Before the tournament even kicked off, it broke the record for most tickets sold with more than 600,000. Advertisement During the group stage of the 16-team event, 461,582 fans attended matches and 22 of 24 matches were sold out, European football ruling body UEFA said on Monday. The first phase of the Euros also saw the record for the highest attendance at a group stage match not involving the host nation being broken twice, with 29,520 spectators watching Spain thump Portugal 5-0 in Bern, followed by 34,165 people turning up to watch Germany defeat Denmark 2-1 in Basel. The match between Germany and Denmark also set the record for the most fans at a women's football match in Switzerland and the record for the most away fans at a women's Euro match with 17,000. The group stage also saw the most fans at a Switzerland women's national team match, with the hosts playing Norway in Basel drawing 34,063 spectators. The record could again be broken as Switzerland advanced into the knock-out stages of a women's European championship for the first time. Advertisement The average attendance in the group stage was 19,233 spectators per match. UEFA said that the Euros have also so far been a "resounding success" across digital platforms, with 8.4 million engagements across the tournament's social media platforms during the group stage – a 55% increase on the 5.4 million recorded during the same period in 2022. Views were also up from 113.7 million to 189.4 million, while website and app views reached 30 million, a 92% increase compared to the previous edition of the championship. On the pitch, the tournament delivered the most goals ever scored in the group stage of a women's European championship with 89, breaking 2022's record of 78 and just six shy of that year's record of 95 across the whole tournament. Advertisement "If it was not clear before, it is undeniable now – women's football is unstoppable and here to stay," said UEFA's women's football director Nadine Kessler. "This is more than a tournament; it's a movement, and the response from across Europe and beyond proves that women's football is not only here to stay – it is setting the new standard." The tournament continues until July 27.

Stunning moment captured on camera as Lleyton and wife rub shoulders with royals

New footage has emerged of Lleyton Hewitt and wife Bec's reaction to a stunning rally in the Wimbledon men's final as they brushed shoulders with the royal family. Lleyton and Bec were invited to sit in the royal box for Sunday's final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz - won by World No.1 Sinner. Retired tennis players Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Chris Evert were all in the royal box, and received their invites as former champions. Hewitt won the title at the All England Club in 2002, while Agassi was crowned champion in 1992. Evert won the prestigious title in 1974, 1976 and 1981. Lleyton and Bec were in London supporting son Cruz, who took part in the junior boys tournament. The 16-year-old Cruz is forging a tennis career of his own, and hoping to follow in the footsteps of his famous father. Cruz enjoyed a straight-sets victory in the opening round of the junior event, but his campaign was ended in the second round. The teenager was spotted in a number of fiery moments directed at father Lleyton as the match slipped away from him. On Sunday, Lleyton was back at the All England Club rubbing shoulders with royalty. The Hewitts were seated directly behind Kate Middleton, and were spotted chatting to the Princess of Wales on numerous occasions. Prince William was also in the front row of the royal box, as were children Charlotte and George. Lleyton and Bec were given top billing in the royal box, and seated in front of other celebrities like Nicole Kidman and Anna Wintour. And there was a moment in the match where they were all blown away. RELATED: Flood of congratulations after Jelena Dokic shares wonderful news Kate Middleton's stunning act for Wimbledon runner-up revealed Wimbledon has released vision of the royal box's reaction to a stunning point won by Alcaraz. The Spanish World No.2 appeared destined to lose the rally, before he produced a wonderful backhand slice that Sinner couldn't get to. The majority of the royal box were on the edge of their seats throughout, before William and Kate were both left with their mouths agape. Bec threw her hands to her face in amazement, while Lleyton was just about the only person in the crowd not to show some sort of disbelief. The Aussie legend clapped the players after the extraordinary rally, but after such an illustrious career it's probably hard to see something that stuns you. In complete contrast, former American player Justin Gimelstob was left completely gobsmacked. A former ATP director, Gimelstob was there as a guest of Agassi. How the Royal Box reacted to THAT Carlos set point 👀#Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 14, 2025 Sinner went on to win the match 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4, becoming the first Italian to win Wimbledon. His fourth grand slam singles title came after he copped a controversial three-month ban earlier this year for inadvertently ingesting a banned substance. The three-month suspension came at an ideal time for Sinner, who wasn't forced to miss any grand slam tournaments and managed to retain the World No.1 ranking.

Trump takes part in Club World Cup ceremony, stays front and center for Chelsea's trophy lift

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — President Donald Trump took part in the trophy presentation at Sunday's Club World Cup final, and hung around next to Chelsea captain Reece James for the initial lift of the trophy after Chelsea's 3-0 rout of Paris Saint-Germain. Trump, who was booed by a significant number of fans here at MetLife Stadium as he walked onstage for the postgame ceremony, initially carried the trophy to James alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Advertisement Then, in a departure from previous soccer tournaments, Trump remained standing next to James. After a brief exchange of words between the two and Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez — and with others, including Cole Palmer, confused behind them — James lifted the trophy with Trump still front and center, and Infantino a few places away. "Before, they told me he was going to present the trophy, and then exit the stage," James said of Trump afterward. "I thought that he was gonna exit the stage. But I think he wanted to stay." Palmer, speaking at a postgame news conference, said: "I knew [Trump] was going to be here, but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand where we lift the trophy, so I was a bit confused." Advertisement Trump clapped and smiled, then hugged and shook hands with Infantino, as Chelsea players jumped up and down. The two presidents then moved to the back of the stage, and eventually exited, as Chelsea players lifted the trophy again and again, with a fireworks show continuing behind them. It is standard for the head of state of a World Cup host country to be involved in trophy presentations. But typically, they give victorious players the stage to themselves for the trophy lift. In Qatar, for example, Infantino and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Qatari Emir, presented the World Cup trophy to Lionel Messi. They then stayed off to the side as Messi carried the trophy to a place in front of his Argentina teammates, and lifted it. FIFA drew criticism that night for allowing Al Thani to drape a traditional Qatari cloak around Messi, and having Messi wear the cloak during the first part of the celebrations. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin) (ASSOCIATED PRESS) At the Club World Cup, though, Infantino and Trump went a step further — a sign of their friendship, and the lengths to which Infantino will go to appease Trump, theoretically in exchange for help from the U.S. government in organizing this Club World Cup and next year's 2026 World Cup. Advertisement Infantino has called the relationship "absolutely crucial." He has visited the Oval Office several times, including for the first meeting of the White House's 2026 World Cup Task Force, an inter-agency group that Trump established in March to assist with World Cup planning. Other members of the task force, and of Trump's cabinet — including U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem — were also in attendance at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Vice President J.D. Vance attended an earlier Club World Cup match in Cincinnati, but Sunday's game was the first that Trump attended. Security measures were tightened, with Secret Service agents stationed around the stadium grounds. Trump arrived in the hour before kickoff. He watched the game from a midfield suite next to Infantino. He was shown briefly on in-stadium video boards prior to the U.S. national anthem — which was played about 10 minutes before kickoff, a departure from previous games — but most fans didn't notice him. There was only a smattering of boos and whistles. Advertisement Trump was then more visible during the trophy ceremony. Boos erupted when he was first shown on the field, and drowned out any cheers. A few more rounds of boos and whistles greeted his image the next few times it was shown on video boards. Chelsea players and coach Enzo Maresca mostly gave apolitical, basic answers when asked about Trump's involvement in the postgame proceedings. "It probably highlights how important the tournament is," James said.
