Trump raises pressure on central bank, calls for Fed governor to resign
FHFA director Bill Pulte -- a staunch ally of Trump -- had reportedly written a letter to the US attorney general calling for an investigation of Cook while suggesting that she might have committed a criminal offense.
The Trump administration has pursued allegations of mortgage fraud against high-profile Democrats who are seen as political adversaries of the president.
It was not immediately clear if such a probe will take place targeting Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the central bank's board.
The president is also limited in his ability to remove officials from the central bank.
A Supreme Court order recently suggested that Fed officials cannot be taken out of their jobs over policy disagreements, meaning they have to be removed for "cause," which could be interpreted to mean wrongdoing.
'A disaster'
The US leader's targeting of Cook, who sits on the Fed's rate-setting committee, comes after his repeated broadsides against Powell while the central bank kept the benchmark lending rate unchanged this year.
On Tuesday night, Trump again called for a "major rate cut," saying there was "no inflation" and claiming that the Fed's policymaking was harming the housing industry due to elevated mortgage rates.
He called Powell "a disaster" in a social media post.
Although the US consumer price index, a key inflation gauge, was steady at 2.7 percent in July, it remains higher than it was a few months earlier.
Fed officials have been trying to ensure inflation is kept in check -- despite the effects of Trump's sweeping tariffs -- while balancing risks to the labor market as they mull the right time for further rate cuts.
Cook took office as a Fed governor in May 2022 and was reappointed to the board in September 2023. She was sworn in later that same month for a term ending in 2038.
She has previously served on the Council of Economic Advisers under former president Barack Obama.
Earlier this year, Trump suggested that what he called an overly costly renovation of the Fed's headquarters could be a reason to oust Powell, before backing off the threat.
Powell's term as Fed chair ends in May 2026.

New 'South Park' episode targets Trump's federal D.C. police takeover
South Park has continued its cartoon assault on the Trump administration with its latest episode, which addresses – amongst other things – the federal takeover of Washington D.C.'s police department. The episode which aired last night, titled 'Sickofancy', depicts the recurring character Towelie - a walking, talking towel - visiting landmarks like the Supreme Court building, the Capitol and the White House. All featured armed troops marching and plenty of tanks. This takes aim at Trump's announcement last week regarding placing D.C. police under direct federal control. He deployed 800 National Guard troops to D.C. to 'rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.' Vice President JD Vance has claimed - without providing evidence - that over the past nine days, violent crime has decreased by 35 per cent in D.C. Even the Lincoln Memorial got a Trump update in the episode which aired yesterday... The new episode also takes aim at world leaders and tech CEOs, who are shown as sycophants lining up outside the Oval Office to bribe Donald Trump with expensive gifts. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook make cameos in the episode, with Cook saying: 'Mr. President, your ideas for the tech industry are so innovative and you definitely do not have a small penis – please accept this gift on behalf of Apple' - a reference to Cook gifting Trump a glass disc with a 24-karat gold base two weeks ago. Later in the episode, things took a darker turn... Episodes one and two have set up Trump as being in a relationship with long-running South Park character Satan. At several points, Trump is shown in bed with the devil. However, 'Sickofancy' shows that Satan is trapped in the White House as Trump's prisoner. When Towelie tells Satan, 'Please, I want to get out of here,' the dark lord bleakly replies: 'So do I, but there is no escape from this place.' The third episode of the 27th season of the satirical show continues its audacious streak of pulling no punches when it comes to Trump, his administration and his allies. So far, Season 27 has depicted Trump as having a micro-penis, showing JD Vance as his minion, as well as giving audiences a deeply unflattering version of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, also known as 'ICE Barbie', who was seen going on a puppy-killing rampage in episode two, 'Got a Nut'. This was a reference to a story from the former South Dakota governor's biography where she said she killed her family dog because it refused to behave. Noem was also depicted being trailed by a team of beauticians having to reattach her face. 'It's so easy to make fun of women for how they look,' Noem told Glenn Beck in response to the episode. Elsewhere, Vance took a more light-hearted approach to the mockery and his depiction on the show, writing on X: 'Well, I've finally made it.' The White House has dismissed South Park as a fourth-rate, no-longer-relevant show. White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said: 'The Left's hypocrisy truly has no end – for years they have come after South Park for what they labeled as 'offense' content, but suddenly they are praising the show." Rogers added: "Just like the creators of South Park, the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows.' Rogers may want to check the viewership figures and rethink that statement, as numbers don't lie... Season 27 of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's animated series has been the most popular in years. The second episode averaged 6.2 million global multiplatform viewers in its first three days of release and also saw the highest live ratings on Comedy Central since 2018.

Macron vows to 'defend my honor' amid viral smear campaign against his wife
In a wide-ranging interview with Paris Match published Tuesday, August 19, French President Emmanuel Macron shared his thoughts on the heated peace talks between Russia and Ukraine under United States mediation ("We got President Trump to change his mind") as well as the strength of his relationship with his prime minister, François Bayrou, who could be toppled in the fall over the 2026 state budget ("He is my friend [...] and I believe the plan that he proposed, which we prepared together at length [...], is a good plan"). In a rare move, the president, between these two major topics, also addressed the persistent rumor targeting his wife, Brigitte Macron. Since 2017, the first lady has been the target of a defamatory campaign on social media alleging that she was born a man. Outraged by this falsehood, a parasite to both his reputation and his private life, the president said he intends to see through the legal actions he and his wife have initiated to hold the main purveyors of these lies accountable, in both France and the US. "This is about defending my honor! Because it is nonsense," the French leader told Paris Match, justifying his unprecedented counterattack for a sitting president by pointing to the explosive spread of this false rumor, which over time has become embedded in a global conspiracy movement. "It has reached such a scale in the United States that we had no choice but to respond. It is a matter of upholding the truth. We are talking about the civil status of the first lady of France, a wife, a mother, a grandmother. Wanting to prevent the restoration of the truth is not freedom of speech," Macron said.
