
Kenya's protests are not a symptom of failed democracy. They are democracy
In this telling, protests are viewed as a political problem with grievances expected to be legitimately addressed using the mechanisms – coercive or consensual – of the formal political system.
Like its predecessors, the increasingly paranoid regime of Kenyan President William Ruto has also adopted this view. While generally acknowledging the constitutional right of protest, it has sought to paint the largely peaceful and sustained Generation Z demonstrations and agitation of the past 16 months, which have questioned its rule and policies, as a threat to public order and safety and to delegitimise the street as an avenue for addressing public issues.
'What is going on in these streets, people think is fashionable,' Ruto declared a month ago. 'They take selfies and post on social media. But I want to tell you, if we continue this way, … we will not have a country.'
The killing and abductions of protesters as well as the move to charge them with 'terrorism' offences, borrowing a leaf from Western governments that have similarly criminalised pro-Palestinian and antigenocide sentiments, are clear examples of the state's preferred response. At the same time, there have been repeated calls for the protesters to enter into talks with the regime and, more recently, for an 'intergenerational national conclave' to address their concerns.
But framing protests as a dangerous response to political dissatisfaction is flawed. Demonstrations are an expression of democracy, not the result of its failures. The Generation Z movement has shown that transparency, mutual aid and political consciousness can thrive outside formal institutions. Activists have made the streets and online forums sites of grievance, rigorous debate, civic education, and policy engagement.
They have raised funds, provided medical and legal aid, and supported bereaved families, all without help from the state or international donors. In doing so, they have reminded the country that citizenship is not just about casting ballots every five years. It is about showing up – together, creatively and courageously – to shape the future.
The Generation Z movement is in many respects a reincarnation of the reform movement of the 1990s when Kenyans waged a decadelong street-based struggle against the brutal dictatorship of President Daniel arap Moi. Today's defiant chants of 'Ruto must go' and 'Wantam' – the demand that Ruto be denied a second term in the 2027 election – echo the rallying cries from 30 years ago: 'Moi must go' and 'Yote yawezekana bila Moi (All is possible without Moi).'
Centring the struggle on Moi was a potent political strategy. It united a broad coalition, drew international attention and forced critical concessions – from the reintroduction of multiparty politics and term limits to the expansion of civil liberties and, crucially, the rights of assembly and expression.
By the time Moi left office at the end of 2002, Kenya was arguably at its freest, its spirit immortalised in the Gidi Gidi Maji Maji hit I Am Unbwogable! (I Am Unshakable and Indomitable!)' But that moment of triumph also masked a deeper danger: the illusion that removing a leader was the same as transforming the system.
Moi's successor, Mwai Kibaki, hailed then as a reformist and gentleman of Kenyan politics, quickly set about reversing hard-won gains. His government blocked (then tried to subvert) constitutional reform, raided newsrooms and eventually presided over a stolen election that brought Kenya to the brink of civil war.
One of his closest ministers, the late John Michuki, had in 2003 revealed the true mindset of the political class: Constitutional change to devolve the power of the presidency, he claimed, was necessary only so 'one of our own could share power with Moi'. Once Moi was gone, he averred, there was no longer need for it.
Due to the obstruction from the political class, it took Kenyans close to a decade after Moi's departure to finally promulgate a new constitution.
Generation Z must avoid the trap of the transition of the 2000s. Power, in the Kenyan political imagination, has often been the prize, not the problem. But real change requires more than a reshuffling of names atop the state. It demands a refusal to treat state power as the destination and a commitment to reshaping the terrain on which that power operates. And this is where the youth should beware the machinations of a political class that is more interested in power than in change.
Today's calls for national talks and intergenerational conclaves emanating from this class should be treated with suspicion. Kenyans have seen this play out before. From the 1997 Inter-Parties Parliamentary Group talks and the negotiations brokered by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan after the 2007-2008 postelection violence to the infamous 'handshake' between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his rival Raila Odinga and the failed Building Bridges Initiative, each of these elite pacts was presented as a way to translate popular anger into meaningful reform. Yet time and again, they only served to defuse movements, sideline dissenters and protect entrenched power.
Worse still, Kenya has a long history of elevating reformers – from opposition leaders and journalists to civil society activists – into positions of state power, only for them to abandon their principles once at the top. Radical rhetoric gives way to political compromise. The goal becomes to rule and extract, not transform. Many end up defending the very systems they once opposed.
'Ruto must go' is a powerful tactic for mobilisation and pressure. But it should not be seen as the end goal. That was my generation's mistake. We forgot that we did not achieve the freedoms we enjoy – and that Ruto seeks to roll back – through engaging in the formal system's rituals of elections and elite agreements but by imposing change on it from the outside. We allowed the politicians to hijack the street movements and reframe power and elite consensus as the solution, not the problem.
Generation Z must learn from that failure. Its focus must relentlessly be on undoing the system that enables and sustains oppression, not feeding reformers into it. And the streets must remain a legitimate space of powerful political participation, not one to be pacified or criminalised. For its challenge to formal state power is not a threat to democracy. It is democracy.

UN says nearly 60,000 displaced by heavy fighting in northern Mozambique
Nearly 60,000 people have fled Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province in two weeks, a United Nations agency has said, amid a years-long rebellion by fighters affiliated with ISIL (ISIS). The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement on Tuesday that escalating attacks that began on July 20 had displaced 57,034 people, or 13,343 families. Chiúre was the hardest-hit district, with more than 42,000 people uprooted, more than half of them children, the IOM said. 'So far, around 30,000 displaced people have received food, water, shelter, and essential household items,' Paola Emerson, who heads the Mozambique branch of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told the AFP news agency. Emerson said OCHA was preparing to step up its assistance in the coming days. 'The response, however, is not yet at the scale required to meet growing needs,' she said, in a context of cuts to international aid by the United States and other countries. 'Funding cuts mean life-saving aid is being scaled back,' she added. The UN's 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan for Mozambique has so far received only 19 percent of the pledges requested. The organisation also stressed that the lack of safety and documentation, and involuntary relocations, were compounding protection risks. The Southern African nation has been fighting a rebellion by a group known locally as al-Shabab, though with no links to the Somali fighters of a similar name, in the north for at least eight years. Rwandan soldiers have been deployed to help Mozambique fight them. More than 6,100 people have been killed since the beginning of the insurrection, according to conflict tracker ACLED, including 364 last year, according to data from the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies. Cabo Delgado has large offshore natural gas reserves, and the fighting caused the suspension of operations by the French company Total Energies in 2021. The French fossil fuel giant has said it hopes to re-ignite the $20bn gas project this summer. Human Rights Watch last month said the armed group had 'ramped up abductions of children', using them as fighters or for labour or marriage. The group said recruiting or using children under the age of 15 to participate actively in hostilities constitutes a war crime.

Nigeria sportswomen dominate again but pay remains an issue
As Nigerian women dominate sport on the continent, they're facing off not just against top talent abroad but a domestic atmosphere of mismanagement and pay disparities – and even the risk of repression for speaking out. Nigeria is fresh off a win at the finals of Women's AfroBasket, their fifth-consecutive championship at the continent's top hardwood basketball tournament, while last month the Super Falcons clinched their 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) football title. The football team's successes, however, have come despite pay disparities compared with their male counterparts – when they are paid at all. The women receive a training camp allowance, but the bulk of their pay comes from per-match bonuses, which vary depending on the team's results. Both the women's basketball and football teams have been plagued by late or unpaid match bonuses for years, despite their records as arguably the best teams on the continent. But when the Super Falcons landed in Abuja after their 3-2 WAFCON victory over hosts Morocco last month, none of the players answered questions shouted by an AFP reporter in the press scrum about whether they would ask the president, who was welcoming them at his villa, about being paid the same as the men's team. Nigerian journalists on the scene said the question was useless: it was far too politically charged. 'If you speak up against what's going on, you completely lose the possibility of getting what you're entitled to, you could actually be blacklisted,' Solace Chukwu, senior editor at Afrik-Foot Nigeria, later told the AFP. Not that there are no clashes: In 2021, basketballers called out the authorities when they topped Africa, protesting against unpaid match bonuses. The Nigeria Basketball Federation at the time denied any wrongdoing, blaming the issue on clerical errors. Like the basketball team, the women's football team has found remarkable success, stemming in part from the country's population of more than 200 million, the largest on the continent, complemented by a widespread diaspora. They also benefitted from early investments in women's football at a time when other African countries focused on men's teams, Chukwu said, helping the Super Falcons win the first seven editions of the WAFCON, from 1991 to 2006. Yet they only played a handful of test matches before they landed in Morocco for this year's competition, cobbled together at the last second. The Super Falcons have not been completely silent in the face of mismanagement and disinterest from authorities. But rocking the boat too much appears to come with a cost. 'Players who lead or dare to protest… always risk not being invited or sidelined outrightly,' said Harrison Jalla, a players' union official. After Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie – now a commentator – led protests over unpaid wages at the 2019 Women's World Cup, she was stripped of her captaincy and not called up for the 2022 tournament. Former men's coach Sunday Oliseh – who himself was let go from the national squad amid protests over backpay in the early 2000s – called the situation a case of 'criminal' retaliation. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) at the time denied that it dropped Oparanozie over the protests. The NFF and the Super Falcons did not respond to an AFP request for comment on the allegations that players are afraid to speak out. Players still have hopes for women's sports to expand. 'I think the sky is the limit,' Nigerian point guard Promise Amukamara told AFP in Abuja, fresh off her AfroBasket win. 'Obviously, more facilities should be built around Nigeria. I feel like, maybe one year, we should host the AfroBasket.' Aisha Falode, an NFF official, meanwhile, called on the government to 'invest in the facilities, invest in the leagues and the players, because the women's game can no longer be taken lightly'. Despite the challenges, women's sport is still finding a foothold among younger fans. Justina Oche, 16, a player at a football academy in Abuja, told the AFP that the exploits of the team inspired her to pursue a career in the sport. 'They say what a man can do, a woman can do even better,' said the youngster, whose role model is six-time African Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala. 'The Super Falcons have again proved this.'

Tourists from Malawi and Zambia are first to face $15,000 visa bonds in US
The United States Department of State has announced the first foreign citizens to be subject to bonds of up to $15,000 should they visit the country on tourist visas. On Tuesday, Zambia and Malawi, both African countries, were the inaugural entries on a list of countries that the State Department will subject to visa bonds. The idea, announced earlier this week, is to impose bonds on countries whose citizens have high rates of overstaying their US visas. Tourists from those countries would have to pay an amount ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 at the time of their visa interview to enter the US. Then, if the tourist departs on or before their visa's expiration, that amount would be refunded to them. The money would also be returned if the visa were cancelled, if the travel does not occur, or if the tourist is denied entry into the US. Should a tourist overstay their visa — or apply for asylum or another immigration-related programme while in the US — the federal government would keep the money. More countries, in addition to Malawi and Zambia, are expected to be added to the list. The bond requirement is slated to take effect for those two countries starting on August 20. 'This targeted, common-sense measure reinforces the administration's commitment to US immigration law while deterring visa overstays,' State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on Tuesday. President Donald Trump has taken a hardline approach to immigration since his return to office in January for a second term. On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order called 'Protecting the American People Against Invasion', which was denounced the 'unprecedented flood of illegal immigration' into the US. It pledged to forcefully execute US immigration laws. That executive order was ultimately cited as the basis for the new visa bonds. The bonds are part of a pilot programme announced on Monday, slated to last 12 months. 'This [temporary final rule] addresses the Trump Administration's call to protect the American people by faithfully executing the immigration laws of the United States,' a filing to the Federal Register reads. Every year, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) releases a report about visa overstays in the US. The most recent report, released in 2024, found that there were 565,155 visa overstays for fiscal year 2023. That amounted to only 1.45 percent of the total non-immigrant admissions into the US. 'In other words, 98.55 percent of the in-scope nonimmigrant visitors departed the United States on-time and in accordance with the terms of their admission,' the report explains. In its breakdown of country-by-country overstay rates, the report indicated that both Malawi and Zambia had relatively high visa overstay rates, at 14.3 and 11.1 percent respectively. But Zambia and Malawi are both smaller countries with relatively few tourism- or business-related arrivals in the US. According to the report, only 1,655 people arrived from Malawi in fiscal year 2023 for business or pleasure. Of that total, 237 overstayed their visas. Meanwhile, 3,493 people arrived from Zambia for tourism or business during the same time frame. Of that total, 388 surpassed their visa limits. Those numbers are dwarfed by the sheer numbers from larger, more populous countries with larger consumer bases. An estimated 20,811 Brazilians stayed in the US longer than their tourism or business visas allowed, for instance, and 40,884 overstays were from Colombia. Critics have also pointed out that the newly imposed bonds put travel to the US — already a pricey prospect — further out of reach for residents of poorer countries. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an advocacy group, was among those that denounced the new bond scheme as discriminatory. It described the system as a form of exploitation — a 'legalised shakedown' — in a statement on Tuesday. 'This is not about national security,' said Robert McCaw, CAIR's government affairs director. 'It's about weaponizing immigration policy to extort vulnerable visitors, punish disfavored countries, and turn America's welcome mat into a paywall.' Citizens of countries that are part of the US's visa waiver programmes are not subject to the visa bonds unveiled this week.
